Michael Parkinson’s Thoughts On Jade Goody – Ouch.

“Jade Goody has her own place in the history of television and, while it’s significant, it’s nothing to be proud of,” Parkinson wrote in Radio Times magazine.

“Her death is as sad as the death of any young person, but it’s not the passing of a martyr or a saint or, God help us, Princess Di.”

“When we clear the media smokescreen from around her death, what we’re left with is a woman who came to represent all that’s paltry and wretched about Britain today.”

Yeah, Ouch indeed. Not really sure what Parky was trying to say here. He’s given up the show – maybe he is struggling to deal with the fact that he’s out of the limelight. Desperately trying to be relevant? This was particularly harsh:

“She was brought up on a sink estate, as a child came to know drugs and crime, was barely educated, ignorant and puerile. Then she was projected to celebrity by Big Brother and became a media chattel to be exploited till the day she died.”-

I’m sure there will be some more from both MP and Jade’s people thrashing this one out.

Well said, Parkie. I can’t fathom why people idolise non-achieving, non-entities like Jade Goody who in the scheme of either world affairs or even the little fishbowl of their own community only rise to prominence because their enormous need for self-promotion matches the dumbing-down agenda of the media. For fuck’s sake, what did she really do? What single contribution to anything worthwhile did she make prior to the she was served by being hit with cancer? More than 40,000 people die from cancer in Australia each year and I will safely bet that the lives of the vast majority of these would tell much more interesting stories than the, to quote Parkie, “paltry” life of the late Ms Goody. Yours in bewilderment.

I agree, CB, that Jade’s “achievements” are debatable and the little I saw of her on Celeb BB certainly didn’t endear me to her at all. I’m just not sure what Parky’s comments do, other than extend the shelf-life of the media coverage and put himself back into the spotlight. His reading of her as “exploited” rings hollow, too.

If she had not had reality tv she would have been working in her local supermarket.
