OPEN POST: MasterChef Australia – The first Elimination of Finals week.

Well the fun starts tonight. Will Chris knowing what is in the mystery box help or is he too distracted by his alleged new paramour? I find it hard to believe that someone so focused on the competition is going to stuff it up because of his dick.

1 Kyvyny { 07.13.09 at 8:15 pm }

Julie: “Bad pie go home”
Matt: “Bad pie, bye-bye”

That’s a close one.

2 Wurstsemmel { 07.13.09 at 8:16 pm }

Chicken and mushroom? All those ingredients??? Come on Julie.

3 CG { 07.13.09 at 8:23 pm }

Good evening ladies and germs…!

Ummm, so we are in the finals week of MC Australia, right ?
Ummm, so why the f*ck do the mini-chefs need to provided with RECIPES for basic sweet and savory pastry???

Shouldn’t this have been part of the test?

Oh, maybe the recipe was on the side of the bag of flour anyway? Wouldn’t that be a riot if they weren’t provided with the recipe and the camera caught some of these posers squinting their eyes trying to make out the recipe on the side of the bag of White Wings flour!

Julie is going tonight I reckon! Why the heck would she try and emmulate Chris and do a dish with beer? Me thinks Chris has got into her head and he will try the same with the rest of ’em if he can!

4 Wurstsemmel { 07.13.09 at 8:23 pm }

Georgie Porgie pudding and pie
Kissed the girls and made them cry

5 Wurstsemmel { 07.13.09 at 8:25 pm }

Julie going? No! I can’t beer it

6 CG { 07.13.09 at 8:28 pm }

Well, Julie or Lucas? But you know how tricky, tricky, trickey those brilliant editors from Ch10/Fremantle are…maybe we are being taken for a ride?

Ummm, is Luke Mangan known for his pies? Haaaahh!

7 Wurstsemmel { 07.13.09 at 8:30 pm }

Oh crumbs Julie

8 Kyvyny { 07.13.09 at 8:33 pm }

Justine could have put that meat on to two pans if it didn’t fit in the fridge on the large one. Were the judges sneaking a taste of her sweet pie filling as well?

9 Kyvyny { 07.13.09 at 8:37 pm }

How many necklaces is Sarah wearing?

10 CG { 07.13.09 at 8:37 pm }

Kyvyny, agree why wouldn’t Justine just scoop the meat-stuff into smaller pans/bowls and put in the freezer…a red herring I reckon. Julie or Lucas???? Place ur bets now!

11 CG { 07.13.09 at 8:40 pm }

Are Julia’s pies really that bad? Lucas’ were not as bad as editing advertised they would be!!

12 Wurstsemmel { 07.13.09 at 8:43 pm }

Lucas but hedging my bets with Poh. Sometimes if you go out on a limb, you fall out of the tree.

I reckon George would be good at that silly eyebrow ad. Yeah.

13 Wurstsemmel { 07.13.09 at 8:49 pm }

George loves little tarts.

Cut to Poh. Unfortunate timing. Snicker.

14 CG { 07.13.09 at 8:50 pm }

The Im-POH-ster gets through again….Luke Mangan a new Im-POH-ster luster? Give me a f*cking break. I’ve had enuf of Poh to last me the next five series!!

15 Kyvyny { 07.13.09 at 8:50 pm }

Making Julie go last, way to torture. At least she didn’t server up the beer blergh.

Puddle pie sounds like a good pie to try and “recreate”.

16 CG { 07.13.09 at 8:51 pm }

Wurst…haha. Yes, the Im-Poh-ster is a little tart…and that is the nicest thing I can say about her!!

17 CG { 07.13.09 at 8:52 pm }

So who to go??? They are OK with Julie’s chicken pie. So must be Lucas? Or will the puddle pie seal her fate? Is this when Matt Cravat sheds a tear?

18 Sooty { 07.13.09 at 8:55 pm }

But both of Lucas’s pies had lousy taste – no seasoning in savoury pie and no sweetness to apple pie; Julie had one v. good pie!

19 Wurstsemmel { 07.13.09 at 8:59 pm }

Yay! I got it right

20 CG { 07.13.09 at 8:59 pm }

WOW! After the discussion I thought Julie was a gonner! I don’t think he is the best cook in the bunch but Lucas seems to be a real sweetie!!

21 CG { 07.13.09 at 9:01 pm }

oh here we go… the Im-Poh-ster wins. Surprise!!! Of course! Will the advantage be greater than the one afforded Chris?

lets all do it together now…whisper in your softest, Suzie Wong, post-coital voice: thanks, Gary…thanks, Georgie Porgie…thanks Luke.

and a theme for tomorrow: Nonya anyone?

22 Wurstsemmel { 07.13.09 at 9:03 pm }

Pah! Poh. The fan club is at it again. The girl who doesn’t want to be a chef

23 Kyvyny { 07.13.09 at 9:06 pm }

Tomorrow’s theme: Dumplings and flip-flopping about intentions on actually being on a show in a field were you’ve told people you don’t care about pursuing a career in.

24 Anon { 07.13.09 at 9:07 pm }

Well I am happy that Julie has survived for one more round

25 Sooty { 07.13.09 at 9:09 pm }

It’s odd. I don’t find Poh offensive at all. Should I be worried?

26 Injera { 07.13.09 at 9:09 pm }

Oh, Kyvyny! Perfect!

27 Wurstsemmel { 07.13.09 at 9:17 pm }

Yes, Sooty, you may be suffering PohCD (Poh Compulsive Disorder)

28 Sooty { 07.13.09 at 9:30 pm }

Wurts, damn. Add that to my stack of Disorders.

Most exciting news of the night. Chris has hair. A full head. In the beginning there he was with a full head of shiny cleanish hair. So not hiding any bald spots. Just an ex advertising guy trademarking himself then.

29 CG { 07.13.09 at 9:38 pm }

Sooty, I missed the no-hat, full-head-o-hair shot of Chris, damn!

I wish there was going to be a live grand finale. Me thinks Chris’ has major hate-on for the Im-Poh-ster and I’d love Chris’ to speak candidly about his thoughts on Suzie Wong and her seductive ways…!

30 BJ { 07.13.09 at 9:45 pm }

Gotta admit i’ve got PohCD! Come on, whether you like her personality style etc. or not the girl has freaking talent. Who wouldn’t want to win 100k anyway??

31 sourkraut { 07.13.09 at 9:49 pm }

despite chris NOT COOKING MEAT (shock horror gasp) he still couldn’t win. That should make the knockers happy.
at least Julie escaped the dreaded exit.
THE FIX IS IN get your money on the prePOHsterous one

32 Ange { 07.13.09 at 9:49 pm }

She gives me the shits. Such a “little tart” 😉

33 TDK { 07.13.09 at 9:49 pm }

what poh did was exciting; daring
either fail miserably or succeed spectacularly
good for us viewers

34 seepi { 07.13.09 at 9:58 pm }

Poh annoys me a lot of the time, but tonight she was the goods. Her pies looked great and were the most interesting by a country mile. She can cook some things really well. But she has huge gaps in her cooking skills – like um – a basic stew anyone.

Poor Lucas, I guess pastry making is not his forte.

I wonder if Chris has been getting to Julia about how much she has missed out on with not participating in the pressure tests etc. She seems to have a real complex about it.

35 CG { 07.13.09 at 10:03 pm }

Seepi, good point. I think Chris’ game is to get into the heads of each of the other contestants…uniquely. He seems to have rattled Julie…something about her time better spent with her family, trying out beer in her cooking tonight, what is with that? Julia, yes, telling her the time she spent out of the comp puts her at a big disadvantage. He probably goes Justine for her inability to cook anything but traditional French well …ie Asian stir frys. But I reckon Chris is afraid of Poh and there is a major hate-on between the two. I know it should be all about cookin’ but I do hope for a little bit of drama in the last few days and it would be great! to see a down-and-out fight between Chris and Poh, with G&G coming to the lovely Suzie Wong’s rescue…of course!!

36 sourkraut { 07.13.09 at 11:44 pm }

Ah the evil doctor chrisenstein. causer of all ills. starting to really make me laugh
I want to see a female judge next round to eliminate the biassed male prepohnderance
you jest! A stringy rhubarb biscuit the most interesting???? to say nothing of her tarted up pastie (yes dear viewers that’s what they used to call vegies in pastry) oh sorry i forgot there were bits of cheeses in it. Sheeeesh!

37 long time lurker { 07.14.09 at 12:46 am }

“whisper in your softest, Suzie Wong, post-coital voice: thanks, Gary”¦thanks, Georgie Porgie”¦thanks Luke.”

Well, she was the best tonight CG. That’s probably not spectacular given we had a night of ‘pudding pies’, uncooked pastry, unseasoned filling and adequate-but-unoriginal standards. She’s definitely not my favourite but I don’t think you can pin her superior performance in this challenge on her manipulating her sexuality (women, amirite?) with a side of race (dem submissive azn women, at that!)

Anyway, I was never convinced by Lucas before he pulled off the beat the professional challenge so I’m not sad to see him leave. And it was pretty clear from the editing tonight that TPTB intend to keep Julia around for at least another round with all the interview segments she had. I hope one of the challenges this week is a vegetarian theme since most restaurants generally have vegie options these days unless they specialise in meat. It would be interesting to see what types of ‘hearty’ meals the contestants come up with – especially Chris and Julie (actually, maybe not Julie, she’ll probably do dessert). If the judges really want to push them, they could go the extra mile and make it vegan instead. >:D

38 Reality Raver { 07.14.09 at 12:54 am }

I loved the way the edited to look like Luke Mangan only gave Poh the kiss good bye.

Long time lurker – great idea a vegan challenge. I reckon there would be all sorts of disasters.

39 long time lurker { 07.14.09 at 12:59 am }

Yeah, the rhubarb ‘pie’ was a bit…avant garde ey? But I’m not surprise the judges reacted well to it considering it was only 2 challenges ago – the one with the budget theme – where they were told cruising by on staples wasn’t going to distinguish them from the pack. Poh’s was the most /interesting/ of the night even if your average patron might not consider it the most appetising or you know, easy to handle. (I would definitely be too intimidated to attack it with my knife and fork if I ordered it. It’s a structural collapse waiting to happen! I’d probably get it all over the table.)

The other contestants seemed stuck on pedestrian ideas tonight. All of them opted for the type of traditional bistro/pub fare that we would have crucified Sam for cooking 2 weeks ago, although I’m sure they all tasted better than what he might have served up. I hope Justine and Julia at least pull it together to really start shining in the next couple of days though. Julie’s fun and good entertainment (her bitchy asides can be hilarious!) but I think she’s probably reached her peak.
