Masterchef Australia – Why Some Contestant’s Decided Not To Come Back

One of the mysteries of this season’s Masterchef Australia for me was why so many of the contestant’s decided not to come back for a second shot at getting back into the competition.

Thankfully Woman’s Day decided to find out why:

Adele Fragnitio has now set up a cooking school for children with intellectual disabilities and decided to knock back a chance to return to the show as she had achieved her goal.

Fiona Inglis – Fiona realised her dream of being “able to combine my passion for working with children with food”, as part of the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden National Program.

Dominic Corrigan – He took a job in the corporate world after the elimination. He says he felt it was too soon to return to the show.

Sarah Carmichael – Was she asked considering she walked out? Anyway she is now pregnant with her third child.

Joanne Zalm – She had only just returned to her two daughters when the call came to return to the show, and Joanne’s dedication to her kids proved too much. “I’m a mum first.”

Carrie Johnston – She did work experience at Sydney’s Quay restaurant, Carrie set up a catering company. She has been travelling in Europe and couldn’t bear to give up the trip for a second shot.

Well this forum has given me insight into just how tedious cooking for tv can be … maybe the gruelling and isolated nature of filming makes it an unattractive option.
Especially as these contestants seem to be a bit more ‘real’ than other reality-style shows. Maybe they’re not all in it for the tits and tortillas.

Buzz, or for contestants like Carrie, they have had the opportunity to see the shows after leaving “the house”, see how they came across and the public feedback and came to the very sensible conclusion not to go back for more! If we recall, Carrie was one of the most highly criticised contestants this year. Watching those episodes back once you returned to the “real world” and hearing/reading some of the public feedback would have been mortifying. I don’t blame her for going on an extended trip to Europe.

I’m really glad that people were able to make the call not to come back. It’s great to read that for the majority of them they’re realising their dreams. That’s always great.
I’m disappointed Joanne didn’t come back; only because her persona on the show was such a drama draw card. I do wonder whether her decision was also influenced by the negative feedback she’d been receiving.

I am seriously pissed off because unless Aaron gave his beanie to another contestant in the way out channel ten have just shown him cooking in Sunday nights episode. That is NOT good enough.

Good God, someone get Sour a ‘Bex’ ( look it up Gen ys) – 2 eliminations in 24 hours will be worse to bear than Auntie’s weiner cardboard

Marion ” I’m not going home tonight” is carrion.

9 dmc { 07.08.10 at 9:45 pm }

I didn’t notice Aaron in the promo but if it was the case then the moron responsible should be sacked.

Let’s be honest, the cooking quality in this competition has now been lowered with the departure of Marion. Jimmy was absolutely right – now they all have a chance to win. I can’t wait to buy a Callum cookbook.

Marion, ya should ave listened to your Mother,
‘ Marion you are a bew-ti-ful girl, great TEETH and all, but you know, you just need to thin out your satay a little bit more’

11 Pollywaffle { 07.08.10 at 9:47 pm }

And, before I walk the canines, wots with this food range launch…..anything for a quick buck, ( wine cafe, yeah right)….. hope the satay sauce isnt in it

12 Eunice { 07.08.10 at 9:53 pm }

In Singapore, the collour of satay sauce is definitely not like Aaron’s sauces’ colour. It’s more brown like Marion’s and can be chunky and sweet. Do the judges actually know what is authentic satay sauce?

13 PinkPatentMaryJanes { 07.08.10 at 9:59 pm }

Such a subjective challenge. Firstly, the contestants didn’t taste the satay sauce that was offered by the judges so what was the benchmark? I’m with Eunice, Marion’s looked more like a traditional satay.

14 NT Kate { 07.08.10 at 10:06 pm }

Wow!

They did everything they could to rig it in her favour – no sudden death on the nuts, and one only she was likely to know; then satay sauce as the cook off and she still managed to stuff it up.

And looked like they were trying really hard to find a way to save her that looked even vaguely credible.

Big risk the producers have taken not keeping them both, even after last week. Hots up the competition, but without the fav will it retain any credibility whatsoever?

Wow.

There’s only two ways to go in this competition. Make sure the best cook wins (Marion), or try and even it out so the finals will have more tension. Looks like they chose the latter.

16 librarygirl { 07.08.10 at 10:09 pm }

Game on. Now it’s a competition!

17 seepi { 07.08.10 at 10:13 pm }

Gooooooo Aaron!!! Well done to him.

Unfortunately he will now always be blamed for getting rid of Maid Marion – not his fault. His satay looked surprisingly good. He can cook, just his repertoire is hot spicy food or italian. And not cake.

I could not have whipped up a great satay with no instructions in 15 minutes. Good for him!

Marion is very stoic – no tears even from her.

SO – back to the nuts – was it she and Johnno that got a visit to a nut expert at some point?

and how could Gary say that the judges had to make a choice – they didn’t make one last week between Aaron and Jimmy.

18 Pollywaffle { 07.08.10 at 10:15 pm }

somewhere in Japan, the inventor of Marion Fembot is getting a right arse kicking for forgetting to preload the ‘ satay for aussies’ app

19 rusty { 07.08.10 at 10:24 pm }

seepi

Aaron can’t cook just about anything, other than spicy hot and pasta – cake, scones, pastry, vegetables, fruit, sauces – to say nothing of his team skills – not.

Last night he couldn’t even manage to bake a few veges properly. Just as Jimmy can’t cook anything other than curry, curry, curry. Most of the remainders are one dimensional cooks who can’t cope without recipes and whizz bang tech.

I don’t mind Marion going – its Aaron, Jimmy and probably the C’s all staying that’s weird.

Bullshit
re Joanne
I dont believe that reason for a second.
She obviously did not want to expose herself and her family to further insane crap from the racist arseholes out there

The bex helped a bit
Too bad Better side won. No complaints

24 Jenny Draut { 07.08.10 at 11:15 pm }

these two bloody judges have the least real knowledge of asian cuisine/sauces

how could they even know how to taste satay sauce properly anyway?

Like Eunice says the sauce is brown and chunky and pretty sweet..

come to think of it, C10 might want to fit Marion into some sort of variety show later now shes not with MC!!

then i will say go Alvin!!!

25 Pollywaffle { 07.09.10 at 12:34 am }

Sour, are you having calamari tonight?

I agree with Sourkraut about Joanne. If it were me i wouldn’t go back in. Good on her for giving up MC instead of exposing her family to more hatred. She’s right, she is a mum first and not wanting to expose her family to the hate just proves it.

27 smauge { 07.09.10 at 9:50 am }

As a mum of two special needs children I just want to say – way to go Adele! Brilliant idea. I sincerly hope it works for her. I might have to look it up for my kids!
