RR: do you know when the meal with Quentin Bryce was filmed? I wonder if it was on/before June 23 – the day Rudd was rolled? And if so, I wonder if Rudd was going to be part of MC finals week to boost his sagging popularity going in to the election and Quentin was the stand-in when Rudd was no longer available and JG realised she would look too opportunistic taking up the slot?

2 skye { 07.16.10 at 10:39 pm }

so someone is going to be eliminated based on their cookbook concept? Did that happen last year, I can’t remember.

3 brain dead dave { 07.16.10 at 10:41 pm }

It’s a pity Maggie Beer won’t be giving an opinion on the tsunami of sauces the amatas are hellbent on releasing.

4 seepi { 07.16.10 at 10:47 pm }

Last year donna hay judged the finalists on the how photogenic their meals were.

5 Reality Raver { 07.16.10 at 10:50 pm }

Skye – was it Chris that went?

CG – I don’t know if Rudd was going to be on it it surely would have leaked. I don’t think he would go on it. Only because Gordon Brown was in the opening credits of ep 1 of UK Apprentice, and look what happened to him.

brain dead dave – you crack me up.

6 Reality Raver { 07.16.10 at 10:50 pm }

Brain Dead Dave – George and Gary are probably peeved they didn’t think about releasing a range

7 brain dead dave { 07.16.10 at 11:14 pm }

Oh, there’s a “Big Mystery Prize” in store ,too,according to a teaser I just saw.

A sauce franchise?

8 skye { 07.16.10 at 11:28 pm }

Ok, so wikipedia tells me that Chris was eliminated after his cookbook concept put him in the bottom two of the episode (final 3), and they then had a cook-off of a representative dish of theirs and Donna Hay judged that on presentation. If Maggie Beer is the judge, will they still have a cook-off for elimination? she’s not all styling and photography focused like the dreadful Donna.

Finals week, full of MC mystery

The Gs are alongside the GG, hope Gary can keep it in his pants

AND using the superior form of MC logic…. when its bullshit its true… and when its el buli you’ll get ecoli …. the PM must be dropping in for a westie truffle (vegemite jaffle) with MP – the question is will he wear orange or red pants?

10 Pollywaffle { 07.16.10 at 11:45 pm }

Donna is recovering from her out of body sushi experience and has sent her apologies for next week

11 Fides { 07.17.10 at 12:05 am }

As far as I remember re Donna’s cookbook episode last year, Julie was in a flap not completing her 2 of 3 dishes (or she couldn’t get all the elements on the plate in time) but Chris had to go because Donna didn’t like his brown on brown concepts, and Julie had Donna in tears with her family cookbook concept.

Why are they still having team challenges in the final week? Is it the only way to keep Callum safe? And it will be very interesting to see them cook individual two and three course meals when they haven’t had to present anymore than one course on their own all competition.

Hiroyuki Sakai? Well, looks like they’ve got my viewership for at least one more night then.

The mystery prize is a lifesize wax figure of Marion.

14 AnonyMousse { 07.17.10 at 12:23 am }

Are each of the 3 cooks cooking a 3 course meal for 1/3rd of the guests on Thursday or are they cooking 1 course of a 3 course meal for the entire guest list? I’m betting the latter, which would be easier to score.

15 Olly { 07.17.10 at 12:39 am }

I’m still traumatised by the thought of The Donna “curling her toes” in ecstasy….

Yikes.

re #16 Anon – Amen! So the real masterchefs are not too impressed with the reality-tv ones? Good advice. Maggie thinks only 3 of the 6 remaining contestants have a cookbook in them. Ha! Wonder what she thinks about all the others in the top 24 who plan to publish a cookbook. Finally, some common sense and realism out of the mouths of persons associated with MC!

18 brain dead dave { 07.17.10 at 1:40 pm }

Most of Alvin’s crookbook will be taken up with photos of and tributes to dead relatives.

Good call on the election date,CG.

RR – a way to make money – {copywrite Pollywaffle 17/07/2010} …wait for it….

a reality show on MC alumnis trying to get their restaurants off the ground, the initial hype, the hysteria, then all the way to hiring someone like Callum and kicking his arse in the backstreet – you heard it here first, yeah Im talkin to you, Channel 10/Coles lawyers

25 Reality Raver { 07.17.10 at 10:44 pm }

Hilarious comments here.

Hell Pollywaffle I would definitely watch and recap that. Aaron Harvie is probably pitching the concept now.

26 Aussiegal { 07.18.10 at 12:49 am }

Am I thinking on correct lines.. If on Sunday the 6 contestants make crustaceans for Sakai San, and then one team goes into pressure test on Monday to make Zumbo’s V8 cake and since Zumbo mentioned in an interview that Jimmy and Adam were the best in his opinion and that they were in the this test,, means that the team they were in loses the test on Sunday?? so we already kinda know which team wins in Sunday’s test before seeing the episode.
Hope I didnt confuse you all lol….

27 Reality Raver { 07.18.10 at 7:40 am }

Aussiegal – it will be interesting to see if you are correct because that would mean the third person in that team is the one that is eliminated…

28 CG { 07.18.10 at 7:47 am }

I thought they were no longer doing teams?

RR: shouldn’t this go in spoiler thread???

29 MrSwinger { 07.18.10 at 11:00 am }

I think it’s just that the winning team gets an advantage, rather than sitting the test out completely – on the preview it looked as though the teams were Adam/Claire/Callum and Alvin/Courtney/Jimmy.

30 littlepetal { 07.18.10 at 4:17 pm }

MrSwinger-You are right. Winning team in the invention test has some advantage going into Zumbo’s cake challenge. Maybe extra time? Thus all the contestant will have to bake the 8 layers vanilla cake which I think it is only fair that in the last week everyone has to do the elimination challenge.

31 Fides { 07.18.10 at 5:05 pm }

Or will they get the recipe to study overnight? Or both?

And much as I’d like to see the Gs in a pressure test (which I think Geo would win), I’d also like to see them doing a sudden death taste test – Jimmy’s curry making skills would finally come is handy if he made a curry with around 105 ingredients.

32 littlepetal { 07.18.10 at 10:23 pm }

Fides-You are right again!!!!

33 Aussiegal { 07.18.10 at 11:21 pm }

Jimmy and Adam were in different teams and they all get to bake the cook tmrw.. sorry guys for causing confusion lol

34 Aussiegal { 07.18.10 at 11:22 pm }

Sakai San was soo koool but I felt I wanted to see more of him.. sorry to comment here RR,, didnt see ur blog for todays episode.

Just keep JG off my screen. The handy dandy etc tv destroyer ran out of ammo a long time ago

36 bigpetal { 07.19.10 at 3:32 pm }

Is this talk about MC ‘protecting’ Callum true? Why the hell would they want to do that? I don’t see any potential in him, no matter which way I look. The way he failed pastry-making twice; does that not tell you that he can’t fix up his mistakes? And in team challenges, all he does is tag along behind the group leader and fail his own dish so that everyone else in the team has to go out of their way to help him out. He’s like a pathetic little lapdog.
Jimmy’s problem is obvious. For God’s sake, can you make anything that is NOT curry? And he’s much too confident for his own good. I’d like to see Callum eliminated on tonight’s episode. Then it’s Jimmy’s turn. I’d like Adam and Alvin to be the final two. They are really deserving of that.

37 Fidez { 07.19.10 at 3:37 pm }

Definitely, but we kind of determined that ages ago. I don’t think Callum will be eliminated yet though. For one, it’s a dessert challenge. He always manages to find his way past those. For another, the judges are totally doting on him. He shouldn’t make it past final 4 though; that’d be going too far. Jimmy, though. HE REALLY NEEDS TO PACK HIS BAGS AND GET GOING.

38 EmilyLyn { 07.19.10 at 6:02 pm }

Please stop saying that Jimmy only knows how to make curries…If he was not capable of making other dishes which is required of him he wont be where he is today..Why nobody comments when Alvin or Adam makes asian style dishes..why be bias towards Jimmy..If anybody needs to go will be Callum..as he is hopeless unless its dessert/pattiserie..type of dishes…so stop being bias and one sided . May the best man/woman win the title…

39 EmilyLyn { 07.19.10 at 6:11 pm }

Callum should have long eliminated if not for the judges being so blind not to see he did not even plate his dish within the timeframe given..yet he gets to join the winning team for a meal..NOT SO FAIR..what a pity the LOSING team had to go to elimination…causing Aaron to be eliminated in the process…Bad judgement by the judges…please do not mess up again in the final weeks by protecting CALLUM….

40 sourkraut { 07.20.10 at 2:30 pm }

Emily Lynn
Absolutely spot on.
The food snobs would rather have garlic laced with butter and chocolate. (guess whose cuisine reigns supreme as the Iron chef would say)

41 Miguel { 07.20.10 at 2:45 pm }

I don’t think they’re protecting anyone here… They always explain why people goes thru and the other dopesn’t.
In the team challenges, even though he has screwed up, he has been lucky enough to be in the winning team most of the time. Is not his fault that his team wins.
By saying that because he didn’t plate all the 5 dishes he should have been eliminated if not appropiate. It wasn’t up to the judges, was up to matt preston and 4 of the best chefs in australia, if you doubt of their decisions, well what can i say??? (Technically you’re saying that MC ask the 4 judges to give good comments to callum and scored him high, not likely that 4 culinary celebrities will accept that).
You have to give him a break, he’s only 20 and he has done some really awesome stuff. I honestly don’t think he will go further than top 4.
Speaking of jimmy, he’s too cocky and Courtney is a roller coaster.
My top 2: Claire and Adam
Adam, has shoed a solid performance during the whole series and claire has been under the radar most of the time but has chosen the perfect time to hit her peak.
I think tonite tuesday will be the end of the line for callum or courtney, jimmy won’t be out, but i don’t think he will win.

42 purplepetal { 07.20.10 at 7:41 pm }

i just can’t believe alvin is gone. i always miss monday episodes because i have piano lessons, and i really wanted to see how they would tackle zumbo’s cake. can you guys fill me in? why did he lose?
and to emily lyn, there is a huge difference between jimmy and alvin/adam. jimmy cooks curries whenever he is not tied to a certain theme. whenever he’s given freedom, he just goes back to his curries. adam and alvin don’t stick to their Asian food. they cook heaps of other stuff as well, and they do it well.
would you guys say that callum is worse, or jimmy? i’m not really sure, but callum needs to work on improving dealing with pressure. whenever he’s under pressure, which is basically anytime he’s in the kitchen, he just starts messing up things. jimmy’s just got to try and let go of curries, and try cooking something else. i find both of them annoying though.

43 gcalombaris { 07.21.10 at 6:47 pm }

after watching last night’s episode, i have to say i definitely think jimmy is worse. this is not just judging by cooking ability. i’m also adding in the social stuff. jimmy chose 12 CURRY ingredients. like, i’m not saying there’s anything wrong with that, because as the other contestants said themselves, if it had been them with that power, they would’ve chosen ingredients to their own advantage as well, but i found it SO annoying. like, not a single piece of meat, just all these spices and powders! i’m alright with courtney leaving; i’m not really her fan. for some reason, i’m starting to think that callum actually kind of deserves his spot now. i think his performance yesterday just upped my respect for him. if there had been a winner last night, it would have been callum. again, i love adam’s creativity. he always comes up with really great stuff. to the person who said he sticks to his asian food, he doesn’t at all. he only does that when they’re meant to cook ‘food from the heart’ or something like that, because in that case, most people go back to their cultural origins from childhood and stuff. like tonight, that cookbook thing, adam’s probably going to base his dish on japanese/chinese food. i think the next person to be eliminated will be jimmy. i think he’ll go tonight… just a feeling. sorry purplepetal i didnt watch that cake episode either. i really want to know how it went down too.

44 Miguel { 07.22.10 at 11:23 am }

Well, as much as I ike the kid, is time for him to leave the MC kitchen, he has proven on this final that he deserved his spot, however, Adam and Claire should be the ones fighting for the title.
Behind of this Callum stuff, I also think there is a bit of a message for kids and teenagers… Fight for your dream, no matter how young you are, no matter how hard it could be, if you want it, go for it………. if you think about it, is a good message for everyone, but i don’t think he should win.
Tpo 2: Adam and Claire (and here I wouldn’t mind any of them winning the title)

PS: I don’t think it is appropiate the way the decided to choose the top 2. Should have been a 3 course each, but again is just my opinion

45 gcalombaris { 07.22.10 at 7:49 pm }

I agree. Callum’s good, but he’s definitely not good enough to win. Before finals week, his success was rare and inconsistent. Now he’s kind of shining through, but he’s just not good enough. He hasn’t got as much experience as Claire and Adam, and he gets up a sweat really easy, and well he’s just got to work on it, i guess.

i’ve heard stuff about how mc is planning to rig it for callum to win. its totally outrageous, but i actually wouldnt put it past them. im convinced that they will never let an asian win, because it’s masterchef ‘australia’ and if they dont put up a white person, it wont seem right to them. i really dont see why it must be callum though. is it because he’s young? i guess because he’s young, it means he’s got more time to learn and everything, but i really dont think it should be him. claire and adam are both fitting for the title, although i would very much prefer adam, but callum is a no. i’ll be so disappointed if he wins.

46 Miguel { 07.23.10 at 12:54 pm }

Agree with gcalombardis, I thought the idea with Callum was to push him as much as they could thru the final, a top 3 finish would have been amazing for him (considering that he represents “generation y”)….. I think they have to realise that he shouldn’t win. Win or lose, he’s gonna have offers flying to get apprenticeships (i think). I would have been happy to see him going last nite, because he did it to top 3, and as you said he has improved a lot in the finals.
Hope that adam wins, he deserves it for consistency, but i think whoever wins the first challenge in that finale is gonna win.
I think that if he wins, they’re gonna ruin him for the future (I wouldn’t buy a cookbook from a 20 yo)
The other think it might happen is that he loses the finale but as a second place price he’s going to be offer something big like what curtis offered poh last season, but again is all ideas in the air.

I guess, we are gonna have to wait and see.

47 gcalombaris { 07.24.10 at 9:27 pm }

Yeah, top 2, that’s enormously good already. But if Callum wins, it just won’t be right. If they wanted to give him a chance, he’s got it already. People know he’s really good, and they’re probably waiting to get in touch with him and hire him, but he doesn’t need to become Masterchef. Adam knows Japanese, Chinese and French cooking, and he’s just got like a range of skills and he’s proved in a lot of challenges that’s he’s got heaps of creativity and well, he’s really impressive. The judges shouldn’t judge the finale on anything other than cooking performance. So what if the Masterchef is Asian? He knows how to cook, and that’s what Masterchef is about.
