Masterchef Judges Admit They Are Porkier This Year

Gary Mehigan, Matt Preston and George Calombaris are the stars of Ten hit MasterChef Australia.

Masterchef Australia judges in the TV Week have admitted what most viewers have noticed it that adjudicating on a food show can be dangerous for your waistline. The photo above is a promo shot from last year.

In the latest edition of TV Week Gary Mehigan talks about the weight issue:

“I think we’ve put on a few kilos,” Gary Mehigan admits. “George saw a photo of us in the paper and said, ‘We look slimmer in that picture!'”

And they are not alone. Adam Liaw, 31, reveals the competition has also had an impact on the contestants.

“The first thing I’ll do when it’s over is go on a diet and try to lose the kilos I’ve put on,” he laughs. “I’ve put on seven and Callum’s put on eight kilos!”

Gary who allegedly once had a six-pack is concerned. He states:

“It has to worry me,” he moans. “I’m a middle-aged man with a spreading girth! I never thought I’d be a chubby middle-aged man, but I’ve turned into one!”

And it’s not just the contestants’ dishes that are to blame. Gary also sings the praises of the “brilliant” on-set caterers who provide their meals.

“We have a really healthy lunch and we try to keep the carbs down and not eat dessert,” he says. “On particular days we know we’re going to be eating lots of little bits of food, so we really keep it to a minimum. But we can’t understand how we put on weight when we only eat tiny amounts – and often, which is what the health gurus say to do to keep your metabolism up. I’m sure my metabolism is perfectly tuned to storing fat at the moment!”

Gary has turned to the gym. But he says time is his biggest obstacle. “I know it is a poor excuse, but if I’m not working. I’m sleeping,” he says. “It’s just a crazy world at the moment. I know health comes first, but it just doesn’t seem to be on the priority list right now.”

Yes, Gary made references to his and George’s weight in both the shows I saw with him today (Boys weekend and Your place or mine, with George) they did say that some days are gruelling on set and sometimes they need to psych themselves up to start eating the product of an assembly line of bbq’s.

Didn’t stop Gary from tasting everything (I mean who wouldn’t?) and trying to laden up George’s dishes with olive oil 😉

Well, when those little portions consist of mostly fat, cream, salt or sugar it’s not so surprising…

They should make a few of the invention tests healthy-food-only ones, where you lose if you have to rely on cream/sugar/anything else unhealthy to improve the flavour. Not every test – that’d get boring – but say one out of every 3. If Australians are taking their food making queues from this show (i’m not myself, but plenty of others have said they cook what’s shown), then it can only do good things for everyone as a whole.

TBH I can’t stand watching any of them chowing down on the food – let’s face it, if it was three chubby female judges everyone would be so critical, talking about how disgusting it is, contributing to obesity epidemic etc etc, but it’s three chubby men so it’s ok ….

I also don’t think you have to cook with heaps of salt or saturated fat to have good taste, I don’t cook like that! And what would be wrong with having more vegie meals? And don’t get me started on the waste of food – what do they do with it all if it’s not used?

Ok I’ll stop now 😉

If you look back at the old footage of Aaron, Marion and possibly also Claire from early in the series, it looks they they’ve all lost weight on the show. Last year Julie and Chris also looked significantly thinner at the end of the show. Despite it all being about food, with the long hours and the continual stress, I imagine it would be easier to lose weight than gain. So what have Adam and Callum been doing to pile on 15 kg between them? Maybe they are big stress eaters? Actually they should weigh Callum at the start of a challenge, and at the end, just so we know exactly how much sweat he loses each time.

Emma : all the unused fresh food goes to Ozharvest. Food they’ve cooked might get eaten by themselves or the rest of the crew so long as Matt hasn’t thrown it on the floor. In fact, that was the biggest demonstration of wasted food right there.

Fides – thanks for that info about the unused food. Yeah I heard about the tantrum but didn’t actually see it.

I agree about the contestants too, I can’t imagine gaining weight in that stressed environment.

Fides – well, some people do eat when they’re stressed, and some stop eating, so either weight gain or weight loss is possible depending on how the person deals with stress.

AnonyMousse – oh I agree! I remember how stressful it was studying for med exams years ago – I’d always have to wear my “fat pants” whereas one of my friends would often drop 3 kg in a week simply from stress. I just think the physical exertion of their 14+ hour filming days would be more conducive to weight loss. Mind you, if they’re bored on set and there is nothing to do but eat, that would also explain it. But bless Adam for revealing his and Callum’s weight gains – I doubt any of the women would be so forthcoming.

And I totally agree with your point about focussing on healthy food. A low fat/calorie challenge would be so interesting! It bothers me when they say MC is changing the way Australians eat and look at food. The focus on fresh food rather than processed is good, but it makes me fear everyone has lashings of cream and butter on everything.

I agree with Emma, let’s get some gender balance here. Christine Nixon for next year’s panel – sans gall bladder.
