Dalai Lama On Masterchef Australia Does This Give Reality TV Credibility?

I was surprised when I read in the Daily Telegraph today that the Dalai Lama will be a guest judge on Masterchef Australia filming today.

Does the Dalai Lama’s, a spiritual leader, give reality TV and Masterchef Australia a new credibility or will this detract from his “brand”? Will we see George Pell staring in next year’s Dancing With The Stars?

The article states:

His Holiness is set to be the guest judge in an episode of MasterChef being filmed in Melbourne today.

The Dalai Lama will join Preston, George Calombaris and Gary Mehigan to taste dishes prepared by the seven contestants left in the competition.

Preston admits the spiritual leader’s decision to appear on MasterChef is a shock but makes sense.

“The Dalai Lama is famously quoted as saying, ‘I sometimes think that the act of bringing food is one of the basic roots of all relationships’ and this is what we aspire to on MasterChef,” Preston said.

The episode, being filmed at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, will feature a range of dishes specially designed for the Dalai Lama by the seven contestants.

MasterChef executive producer Caroline Spencer said landing the Dalai Lama was a coup.

She said his MasterChef appearance was the brainchild of renowned chef Kylie Kwong.

“Kylie is a Buddhist who is also part of the MasterChef family. She has cooked for His Holiness before,” she said.

“He will be eating the food that the contestants will be cooking for him.

“Due to his beliefs, he won’t be judging in the strictest sense of the word (giving contestants the thumbs up or thumbs down for their dishes a la Preston, Calombaris and Mehigan) because he is unwilling to pass judgment.”

Well it will certainly be an interesting episode, and maybe the Pope could consider being on The Bachelor.

Kylie Kwong is a Buddhist? I’m guessing she probably practices “her version” of Buddhism to increase its “depth of flavour,” and tries to justify it by saying, “We Buddhists…” when referring to herself.

I am all astonishment.

I”ve got his book, The Art Of Happiness. The $ he gets will probably go to a charity,which is good.

But I’d rather see him on Hot Seat.

Still I ask,what has Ma$terchef got to do with religeon?

It’s all about cooking this season. Yeah, right!

Going on this appalling show merely makes him the Dalai Lamer..

…like the “real” Chinese people, as Kwong says. (But I do cook her recipes.)

I’m thinking a Buddhist monk can’t afford to be picky, given as they subsist on the food donated to them by members of the temple community.

If Buddhists do burnt offerings, the DL has come to the right place.

In Iron Chef a Buddhist Monk became a contestant because he wanted to showcase that his religion’s food (ie plain, vegetarian dishes) could compete against flashier modern dishes.

The Dalai Lama’s probably on Masterchef for a similar reason – to promote the whole non-violence (ie non-meat) edict of their dishes.

A judge who won’t judge? Seems about right for this years she-jumped-the-shark-a-while-ago-now Masterchef.

Folks said the Titanic wouldn’t sink, then there was Ma$terchef.

Perhaps this will give them an excuse to bring back eliminated contestants: “He’s reincarnated!”.

At least we won’t get stupid quotes like “boom boom shake the room” from the Dalai Lama.

“The Dalai Lama is famously quoted as saying, ‘I sometimes think that the act of bringing food is one of the basic roots of all relationships’

He’s never had a root.

I hope Billy if he is still there will cook the dish called Bhuddha jump over the wall!!! It is not a vegetarian dish but the story is it is so good that the monks have to jump over the wall to eat it!!!

15 littlepetal { 06.11.11 at 9:25 pm }

Or someone can serve up a bowl of plain rice porridge to get the thumb up from the Dalai Lama

16 brain dead dave { 06.11.11 at 10:00 pm }

Lol…..Wonder when Matt Pre$ton last jumped over a wall? He won’t be able to taste.

17 littlepetal { 06.11.11 at 10:13 pm }

BDD-you never know, Matt P may be very good at high jump! Lots of practice as he can’t resist food.

Hope this isn’t a piss poor excuse for Sun to get out the Hare K glad rags – it will be a clash of the citrus circus

You people are cracking me up….like a mud crab!

Matt P – “From the vines ..to the mine…to the divine”

Oh heaven forbid!

Come to think of it…Matt P is overdue for some “enlightenment”!

I think it’s very unlikely that Sun will be in the top 7 tbh.

23 AnnyB { 06.12.11 at 8:49 am }

The dishes for this episode may not be vegetarian as the Dalai Lama is known to eat meat regularly. It will also depend on which school of Buddhism is practiced as to whether they are vegetarian.

What next – a kosher challenge with the Chief Rabbi of Israel? A hot cross bun challenge with the Pope?

One good thing about this story, though: we now know exactly what the MC taping schedule is :->

Wonder if the DL was okay with the ridiculous amount of product placement going on. I can just see him commenting that a dish would be better with some Masterfoods Barbecue relish.

26 littlepetal { 06.12.11 at 10:57 am }

AnnyB-It’s in the paper today that it is a vegetarian lunch challenge.

Yes we do know about the schedule. Big time lapse between the Final 8 to the Final 7. NY week is somewhere around 20 May. They must have a short break when they came back from NY. Paper also said this episode will be air in mid – July.

27 EH { 06.12.11 at 11:29 am }

I heard it was top 6 instead of 7 that flew to Melbourne for DL episode.

28 Pollywaffle { 06.12.11 at 4:00 pm }

I’m hoping it’s just Alvin from S2 dressed up

29 brain dead dave { 06.12.11 at 5:18 pm }

The DL could use his spot to deliver a kindly lecture on the wages of sloth and gluttony using Matt Pre$ton as an example.

A guy that can put away eleven bone bone marrow risottoes can hardly hope to be reincarnated as anything more than a pot gutted,cravat toting cockroach.

I hope Matt P doesn’t address the DL as “Dude!”

30 davsimp { 06.12.11 at 7:05 pm }

Well let’s hope Rachel isn’t in the top 7 then for the DL’s sake if nothing else. They are wheeling out Heston Blumenthal tomorrow, that could get ugly.

31 scruffnkelsmum { 06.12.11 at 10:56 pm }

…& speaking of ugly, if tonite they were all supposedly cooking with stuff that is not their forte, how come the greasy one got beef- when that is his supposed strong point (sometimes, lol) and how he got into the damn top 50???

trying to guarantee the unhealthy looking one stays in longer?????

When’s Bono going to make an appearance….

…oh yeah, that’s right. He’s on the night after Geldof.

Its pleasure and very happy to see his holiness the Dalai lama on masterchef australia… Its a great. Free tibet.

not gonna judge; its cool or not not so cool for DL in a reality show. I’m not any kind of Buddhist either.

BUT do like to mention, when Ellie served her food following an emotional brief that says how she failed to complete the dish properly..DL touched her hand and a just little patting. Honestly the compassion & adoration was clearly radiated from that moment of that unison..it touched me like hell..i was frozen by the beauty of that particular moment for a while..
