The Block – Judging Of The Second Bedrooms

The second week of judging of the rooms on The Block, and everyone but Katrina and Amie did a bedroom. The two sisters did a double study.

A few thoughts on the episode:

  • Katrina and Amie’s idea to have a double study was not good one. They said they were aiming their house at professionals, but as the judges said the way they had designed the room really made it difficult to turn it into a bedroom. I couldn’t work out why they put a TV in there, there was only one big chair to sit on. Maybe the room would have worked better with a bunk bed in it to  make it a kids room. They are aiming for a professional couple, this could effect them badly at sale time.
  • What is with the swingers brown shag pile carpet in Rod and Tania’s house. I know they think people will like it I am not so sure in the inner city market. I am glad Tania for her teenage boy’s room could not find that Ralph magazine. As I don’t think the urbane judges would have thought it was at all tasteful. However I thought they did really well with such a small space.
  • Polly and Waz’s room was talked up by the judges. Ok it was twice as good as last week’s white blandness they put up. But really the guitar on the wall and microphone was a bit kitsch and not in a good way. Also their built in wardrobe did not go all the way to the ceiling.
  • Josh and Jenna killed one conspiracy theory of mine which was the same team never wins a room twice in a row, so they can share around the $5000 weekly prize. However their kids bedroom was such a standout in the second hand furniture challenge that it would have been wrong for them not to have won.
  • Katrina and Amie did not look happy with Josh and Jenna winning again.
  • Also next week they have to do the bathroom and laundry which much be a huge advantage again for Josh as he is a plumber. However there is no way they can win three times in a row. Can they?

I’m glad Josh & Jenna won again, I really liked their room. Polly & Waz’s was better than last week but I still didn’t like it much, missed the beautiful old fireplace they ripped out and hated those stupid holes in the wall – not right for an old period house. The other two rooms I didn’t like one bit especially the brown shag pile carpet – it’s revolting and yes, you’re right, sleazy looking – especially for a kids room.

And what was she thinking with trying to find a ralph magazine for a teenager’s bedroom – ick!

Also their surfboard didn’t do it for me – it was bright blue, and the rest of the room was browns. I don’t mnind the shag pile carpet though!

The sisters’ room was wierd. Just the one chair taking up the whole end of the room, and then to have such an ugly bright green one.

It was definitely between Polly and Waz and Josh and Jenna this week and even though they’re not my preferred team, I think Josh and Jenna deserved to win this week.

Polly and Waz definitely improved substantially from their rather poor first room, but they need to settle on a single theme for the entire house instead of choosing a unique “theme” for every room. Unless they’re planning on a “musical/rock and roll” bathroom next week?

The sister’s study was ridiculous and I don’t know what market they’re hoping to capture with a built-in two-person study. I guess a young couple who work from home may be attracted to the study, but that’s a pretty small market of potential buyers.

The teenage boy’s room was okay, but seems to be very limiting, especially when compared to Josh and Jenna’s “teenage retreat” which could have been occupied by a teenage boy or girl or used as a spare bedroom/study with minimal changes. And the brown shag carpet is hideous. Not only does it look ugly, I can only imagine that it must be an incredible pain to vacuum.

Bet you the producers are regretting picking some of the couples now.
What on earth were the sisters thinking? Polly and Waz were not much better with what they did with the room.
I am looking at the houses and keep thinking how much rework would you have to do to get the house presentable (i.e. ripping that ‘study’ out).

I’m getting a little pleasure of the horrified look every time on Amie’s face when they don’t win. What a waste of a room though. Even if they didn’t set it up as a full bedroom, it would have made sense not to build it out so much that it wasn’t easily changeable. Will surely come back to bite them…

I loathe the shag carpet, I can’t believe it made a second appearance. I missed the part about the Ralph magazine…euw….but I am thinking the ‘Kath and Kim’ comment was spot on

Obviously Polly and Waz have seen the trend for recesses in the wall…doesn’t mean it suits everywhere though…I didn’t think the room was really any better than last week…still a lot of white and I hated the guitar and the microphone. What was that about?

Which really means that only Josh and Jenna’s room was a contender. I’m liking her less though as the weeks go on.

I can’t believe the scores were that close. Did you notice the poor paint finishes in the sisters room and the red panel in the married couples room?

Anyway, still watching…..

Ralph mags? Sha-a-a-a-ag carpet?!
Do I detect a theme emerging with Rod & Tania – who I hereafter name The Swinging Bogans*?
Two things come to mind here. Firstly, if they were seriously considering using teen masturbation requirements as a selling point they needed don their real estate mogul hats and put aside their inner truckstop bogan aesthetics. I would’ve just said that that the room came with free wifi, unlimited download and free one-year membership of How could one thumbed and frayed Ralph mag compare to this? Secondly, a question regarding sha-a-ag pile. Why was this only popular in the 70s? Was it because it protected against carpet rash in a way that normal carpet couldn’t? Or was it simply used to hide Afghan dogs from landlords? Chicks of Scott Cam’s vintage, can you help me with the answer to this essential question?

* nice band name idea, if i may say so myself

Katrina and Amie’s ‘study’ looked like a KGB interogation room from a late 60s Bond film (located in a neutral, like Switzerland) – single seat in middle of room, info consoles for spycraft on the sides. A touch of shag pile and a bit of wood panelling and this’d be perfect. Where da f**k was the laser gliding slowly up towards Bond’s crotch?

God, who want’s to sit in the study and watch TV? Time for a work break is time to get comfy. It is a such a cold looking room, I couldn’t chill out in it. And these two sisters, I reckon they’re pretty spoilt, you know. Hubbies indulging them, showering them with praise regardless. Welcome to the real world ladies, you ain’t that good. Suck it up!
I’m still liking Josh & Jenna for the win. Agree Wurstsemmel, Polly & Waz’s wall recesses just don’t suit that house.
And the older couples ‘style’ just doesn’t grab me. Even without the soft porn for the kids.

Well it looks like the method of elimination from 8 to 4 couples by doing those rooms didn’t work. HA HA ! I knew it would’t work. The 4 winning couples’ rooms so far are all so dull and uninspiring. I hope they don’t ruin next years’s (2012) beautiful victorian terraces. Saw a photo of the interior of one of them and they are fabulous. Looking forward to next year’s series. That’s what’s gettting me through this year’s shows.

I don’t mind the shag carpet but that’s mainly due to the colour and I have no problem at all with the Ralph mag idea (it’s not porn people and it’s the most popular mag for the age group they were aiming for ie, 15-16). Polly and Waz’s recesses are popular for a reason, a little more thought in their placement and function though would be better.
Josh and Jenna’s style is not my cup of tea but to each their own. I would not however pay the type of money they’ll be wanting for a furnished house with a bed made out of pallets.
My greatest joy thus far this season is watching Amie fume when she doesn’t win and josh’s train wreck of a haircut.
