The Renovators – The Bloke Challenge

The challenge tonight was more Backyard Blitz then The Renovators, the contestant’s were split into two teams and they secretly re designed two suburban backyards for Jodie and Tanya’s husbands to have ‘their man cave’.

I have to say I would be happy to be on a reality show if it meant a team of people coming to sort out my backyard, as a lot of viewers would as well.  Add in a tradesman who looked like Keenan and I would be a very happy camper.

Anyhow the teams only had six hours but a good budget of $7,500 to put some razzle dazzle on these suburban yards.

Lisa was looking particularly underwhelmed when she said “It was such a great idea. These fathers are going to be soo excited”.

Baz was doing better whipping up the excitement with the wives. “Do your husbands deserve this?”. What did he expect them to say “No, he is a bit of prick after he has had a few drinks,” of course they are excited.

Lisa is a bit of a space cadet, she left the trolley in the aisle at Bunnings, but she is likeable. She also forgot the potting mix and had to rush back to get it in the last 30 minutes of the challenge. Surprisingly she stayed calm and did not become hysterical.

The big BBQ’s were the centrepiece of the backyard, and Jarrad and Melissa chose a huge one that was bigger then kitchens in inner city apartments. Natalia was not impressed with the whopper she had to assemble and blamed Jarrad “that is what you get when you send a young guy to buy a BBQ”.

Baz was getting bolshie with Peter’s team about the pavers they were using and he was concerned about the quality of the tiling. He said to Peter “you’re a tiler are you happy with it?”, Peter gave him the death stare and said “I don’t usually do jobs in six hours.”

The father’s mates got to vote which one was the best backyard, and the gold team won. They think the huge BBQ brought it home for them. “Size does matter” said Baz.

Michael from the fibro cottage was picked as best worker, and scored the working bee. This is great for Jarrad  and him, however unfortunately for them because of the nature of the challenge half of the contestants won’t be there because they are up for elimination.

Yeh but its a quality working bee and they wont miss Peter as he ahs said he never gives his all at a working bee. All the guys at the working b have had one so they’ll give there all. So happy for michael and Jarrod. I had abit of BBQ envy (although it wouldnt fit in our backyard anyway). How do you get to host a challenge like that. Probably who you know I guess

I think Michael and Jarrod should get an extra day as well, when the losing lot can turn up and help…seems a bit unfair otherwise. I am glad the gold team won, and esp. that Michael was deemed the best in the team :).

Peter is getting a bit precious isn’t he?? I used to like him, but that is wearing off a bit, although I did like his kitchen the best in the panic room challenge the other night.

I am especially glad that the gold team won, given that the black team had a big advantage with an existing under cover area.

I kept waiting to be told why these two blokes in particular were worthy of the makeover….Did they rescue someone from a fire? Volunteer to feed the homeless? Were they recently made redundant? Or did they or their wives simply know someone in the production office? Just being a beer-guzzling bogan bloke’s bloke is hardly worthy of a prize.
Because of that my attention wandered and I had to come here to find out who won. How many people are up for elimination?

Hmmm … tonight smacked a lot of the MC format. Lisa and the blonde girl on the black team are really starting to annoy me. Much preferred the gold team BBQ area, and quite liking Michael so far.
Off topic – just noticed top design started at 10.30 tonight. Why so late? Is it tanking?

par3182 – people up for elimination are beige team – suzanne and Nathan, orange team – Peter, Bob and Lisa, and light blue team jason j, sam, kathy and Luke or is it Keenan I muck them both up.

Buzz – Top Design has been used to GEM HD at 8.30pm and on Nine at 10.30pm. It is tanking which is a pity as it a good program with interesting challenges and cast.

Par3182: green-an: hilarious… I enjoyed the challenge and was rooting for the gold team. I thought the black team had a bit of an advantage with the larger covered area but turns out it wasn’t a guaranteed win like I expected. Thrilled michael got the top prize of the day, he has become my favorite reason to watch!
Peter has become a bit of a lahlah hasn’t he? Poor bob having to build yet another fence. I predict the girlies from the sky blue team to be in trouble tomoro

Pity Ch9 put second Farmers episode on at 7.30. I caught bits of both shows. Really thought the black team would win but happy to see Michael and Jarrad come up trumps again. Making 2 teams in elimination challenges is probably a fairer way to find a loser – small teams aren’t disadvantaged by lack of manpower. I thought it was precious how devastated the orange team members were in their first elimination – doh – ‘now we understand how the khaki and dark blue teams felt’.

Par3182- Yeah I was wondering the exact same thing. Why were those 2 dads chosen as ‘superdads’ over thousands of other dads in Sydney? I think the fact that the 2 families were next door to each other played a part but not sure how they actually found them. Maybe one of the wives knows someone in the production team or something?

I loved the Gold team’s backyard, and I think they had to work a lot harder considering the other team already had the structure to work with from memory. That BBQ was awesome, I have actually seen similar ones in the shops and thought hell yeah, lol. And the bar area was clever too. So great to see the Fibro Cottage boys get the working bee, they really need it. But it sucks that they only get half the people, even though they are getting the better people who actually put in the work (Keenan, Natalia etc). Peter was starting to annoy me last week with his constant comments at every working bee about how he’ll only put in 50% or 60% or whatever. I’d love it if he won a working bee and every other contestant took that approach.

I also wondered how they chose those two “superdads”.

Pity they couldn’t have flown them to Brisbane or the other places where there are still way too many families who have yet to move back into their homes that were devastated by January’s floods.
A free backyard do over would be most welcome for people for people who actually need it. (And yes, my house was flooded, which is obviously why this challenge pissed me off so much.)

Forgot to add that I was also really glad that Michael won the working bee, even if it’s only a half strength one.

Rosie, in the previews they have shown that they fly up to QLD later in the year to help out people up there, don’t know what they are doing exactly but I know that they do go up there later on, hopefully people were helped.

I don’t get why those blokes were chosen either, probably because they do live next door to each other, like those terraces earlier on in the season.

Happy the gold team won, because I think they have harder workers, plus I am kind of hoping that Kathy goes from the Light Blue team, I just don’t like her for some reason, plus that would kind of even things up!

Disappointed the working bee will only be half strength but hey it’s more people than they are used to anyway so a win is a win I guess. Hope they get a lot of work done.

Can’t the pussywhipped superdads have female “mates” or are they planning to sit around the barbies and watch porn?
