The Renovators – Peter Is A Renovating Robot

The Renovators apparently had their wrap up party last week which must mean the houses have finished. This might explain when I did a quick drive by of Marrickville shop there was someone painting the gate, and it was not a Renovators contestant.

And that should have been a job that they could have done as it is not very technical. This has been one of the criticisms of this season that there needs to be more renovation and less challenges.

Even though the ratings have not been great for this show, people who have been talking to me about it really want to see what it can be like with a few tweaks.

Tonight the first challenge was a concreting challenge, and how embarrassing for Keenan who is a concretor who was struggling to make top three.

I know I complained about gratuitous shots of Hayden Quinn on Masterchef, but for some reason I don’t have issues with Channel Ten showing shots of Keenan in his singlet on a building site. My excuse is he is doing something that relates to the subject of the show – renovating.

Anyway Peter who was doing the challenge by himself won. He did have a smaller area to concrete, however it was an amazing effort. The Blacktown Fibro team were through to the white room challenge, as were Keenan and Melissa.

The white room challenge was to turn it into a banquet room. There were three styles to choose from. Peter picked elegant Victorian, and he also picked team inner city terrace to help him. He showed just how savvy his is by saying he would give them 40 per cent of the prize which would give them $4000 worth of white goods if they won. This was a nice incentive to make them want to work their patootie’s off for him.

Blacktown Fibro picked the Moroccan theme, and the Green team were left with early Australian.

Robyn Holt was a tad hysterical when she said”Now Mike has never been to Morocco, but he now knows where it is. Luckily August has travelled there….” Well Robyn had not queried that Peter had not visited the Victorian England, nor the Green team early Australia.

There was tension on the Green team who had the khaki team to assist them. Suzanne could not contain her type A personality and was trying to instill her opinion and did not appear to like Melissa’s colour choices.

Melissa was bitching about everyone bagging her. They were not bagging her but the colour. She said stormed off sobbing “You have not idea.”

Peter Ho gave her a pep talk and she was meant to go back in and take control, but meekly she  just said to Keenan she was happy with the green which all the others had liked in the first place.

The Morrocan room looked like a Tree of Life shop. It was just too much.

The judges were critical of Peter’s vinyl flooring, but he knew he would not finish if he did wooden floor boards.

Peter ignored Peter Ho’s hints about the size of the rug under the table but it did not matter as he won the challenge.

Peter really is one of the contestants that deserves to win the competition. He is a standout competitor.

The timeline of this show is baffling; tonight Green team’s rear extension has been built but last week only the frame was up, and the trench issue was just being dealt with. How much time goes by between episodes?

And for how many more episodes will we have to put up with the annoying Melissa? I’m glad Baz gave her a subtle smackdown with “I know you had a meltdown in the middle and ran out of time…” pointing out she created her own problems. I hope one of the valuable lessons she’s hoping to teach her son Harrison is how to be a highly strung drama queen.

The opening of the episode focusing on Melissa and Peter pretty much indicated that the near invisible Grey and Light Blue teams weren’t going to be in the running for prizes.

Does anyone else want to climb into their tv an rearrange the contestants/judges? Pull Jarrods pants up, straighten robyns glasses, remove Lukes lip things, shave Peter Ho’s ‘wish-kers’, put keenans glasses on, tuck in michaels sticky-outy dreads, pull up michaels pants, remove Melissa—- lol. Theyre all just so in need of a good look in the mirror before filming! I’m all for naturalness but come on…. You’re on national television!

3 JStar { 09.04.11 at 11:38 pm }

Well RR, if you were only in Melbourne I’m sure you would have lined up to see Keenan at the Sunshine Bunnings flexing his biceps as he did some handiwork. Maybe someone can post a picture for our host please?

Ratings not great but not as disastrous as Top Design. Definitely think the upcoming Queensland episodes should lift the ratings and maybe hook some more people. Agree that more renovating should be shown and maybe your advice is being looked at as each episode is now bookend with renovation on the homes. Needs more but it is a step in the right direction. And ofcourse, Melissa had a whine but I’ll forgive her this time as Suzanne does have history with creating tension when she was in the green team and initially when she joined the khaki team. Also Melissa was exhausted which lends more weight to what some of the eliminated female contestants said about the sheer physical demands of the challenges required. Notice how Melissa, Suzanne, and Natalia looked completely wrecked at the end of the concreting challenge?

And as for Peter, geez, what can’t he not do? He’s a good workhorse, great with his manual labouring, great eye for design and detail, expressive face (a reality tv must), and generally well liked by everyone. I’ll be the first to say it people, “Husband material ladies!” 😛

By the way, if Peter gets to choose his next team mate to help him, he should choose Natalia. So underused thus far.

I think Keenan’s problem with the concreting is that he is a professional- his 1st lot of concrete looked, to me at least, how you expect concrete to look if they want it to take a few days to cure- which they usually do…not instant, dry/firm to touch. felt a tad sorry for him, but at least he didn’t come last, lol.

Melissa the whiner does annoy me, but Suzanne does far more- which part of “helper/labourer” not designer does she NOT get?!?!

& I agree, the girls are a bit disadvantaged when it comes to challenges requiring a lot of muscle. I like this show, better than the Block etc, but it is seemingly geared a little more towards the males succeeding….

5 Moo { 09.05.11 at 12:51 am }

JStar: I’m pretty sure Peter is gay.

6 Moonstruck { 09.05.11 at 1:21 am }

Totally agree Moo.

7 Moonstruck { 09.05.11 at 1:32 am }

What I can’t work out is how come he doesn’t have an accent. He came frm Rome in 1998 when he must have been 20. Usually if you are 10 or over and you start learning a language you have an accent. Peter’s is really non existent.

8 smauge { 09.05.11 at 7:37 am }

I wondered that too Moonstruck! I was shocked to hear how recent he moved here. He must have deliberately Australianized his accent.
As for pulling up pants, it’s a building show – coinslot is mandatory.
And for the record – I was with Melissa on the red paint. That green looked bland. I think Robyn would have preferred the red paint too.

9 Richard { 09.05.11 at 7:47 am }

JStar: Once you saw Peter’s front room at his home (“I’ve done my front room in Victorian” ) you would realise he was gay! Loving him (and the various guys’ coinslots!)

10 Moonstruck { 09.05.11 at 8:02 am }

Another giveaway is his quote on his profile on the Renovators ““I’m doing The Renovators to be recognised for what I do,  to have the tiara and win… only joking!”
They use a strange photo of him where one ear sticks out and the other looks very close.

11 smauge { 09.05.11 at 8:13 am }

Do we need to look for subtle hints? The boy is as camp as a row of tents!

12 Melly { 09.05.11 at 9:18 am }

So happy that Peter won both challenges, he is a freaking machine! If he doesn’t make it to finals week I will be very shocked.

I wanted to throw a paint can at Suzanne so much last night, she was there for LABOUR not to give advice on how to decorate the freaking room, and as much as I like Keenan he is the head renovator now and should have stepped in and told Suzanne to shut her bratty mouth and freaking paint.

Usually I don’t like all the tears and “boo-hoo” shit that goes on with these shows, but, I can understand the tears, if you have had a hard day, you’re sore, tired, and some bitch is whining in your ear that she doesn’t agree with you, that can break even some of the strongest people.

All in all good ep last night – Got me happy and got me mad.

13 Maz { 09.05.11 at 9:37 am }

Willing to bet that Renovators won’t be picking a terrace house in Sydney again. If I was the owner of the adjoining property, would be mightily annoyed that due to a TV show the foundations of my property were being undermined.

Which begs the questions, if the neighbours had problems with the plans (and the changes that have been made) what recourse did they have. Various local councils would have approved DAs quickly not be to slagged off on national tv.

14 Kenneth { 09.05.11 at 1:06 pm }

I saw Night at the Museum last night and it kept me remembering Michael from the navy blue team when I see the cave men. hehehe…

15 seepi { 09.05.11 at 1:47 pm }

Suzanne and Melissa both have highly annoying voices and talk too much.

Other than that I wouldn’t change anything on Renovators. I think it started at the wrong time, and people were expecting to see a show like the Block and got confused. I think both Renovators and Top Design are better shows than the Block, just unlucky with ratings.

I love the White Room challenges. The only thing I find dullish is the practical challenges – eg – make some concrete or cut a table leg to size. But they are done quickly, but I think as a lead-in to the show they are not a good thing to bring in new viewers. If I hadn’t seen the show, it came on and they said ‘now a concrete pour’ I’d be flicking over pretty quickly.

16 Reality Raver { 09.05.11 at 2:39 pm }

Melly – the reason Keenan did step in might have something to do with the rumoured romance between him and Suzanne

Moo, Jstar, Moonstruck and Smauge – definitely gay.
Also in awe about his lack of accent. I think he is pretty clever and focused.

Jstar – I would like to think I might have gotten down to “check out” keenan at Bunnings, but considering I still haven’t driven by the St Peters house (half renovated house) which I live 5 mins from chances are I would not have.

Marepoppins – hilarious

par3182 – maybe she is teaching Harrison how to deal with highly strung women. A handy skill for men to acquire.

Sue – I think that is an issue that needs to be addressed that the majority (not all) the challenges are quite tradie.

Richard – LOL – the decorating style is not the only give away.

Maz – no reno show will be touching a inner city property again. Also with the workman being rushed stuff ups are going to occur.

Kenneth – Lol

Seepi – I agree – timing was off for this show. I hope they stick with it.
Look at The X Factor this year – ratings gold for Seven. Also seven stuck with My Kitchen Rules – tweaked it and again ratings bonanza.

17 Mama'sMilk { 09.05.11 at 4:19 pm }

I’ m OK with the fact we haven’t seen much renovating so far. After all, demo work makes good TV but there are only so many seconds of air-time you can devote to scraping weatherboards (which may have taken days but I don’t want to see it)

I think they missed a golden opportunity to show the design phase of each of the houses; would have been great to hear how they decided what changes to make and to see the options as a fly through and why one might work but the other wouldn’t … I think that’s the stuff that inspires would-be renovators to cast a critical eye on their own property and work out the potential (like the cut-out model idea but with 3D graphics)

Hoping to see more renovating stuff once we get to the painting and finishes stage.

Next year would love to see some more design challenges along the lines of “take this couch and coffee table and cluttered dated room and now bring the room together” …. I think Robyn means well with her “how-to” lessons on designing “beach chic” or “eclectic” but most viewers at home haven’t go the luxury of starting from scratch with a room.

18 kingfisher { 09.05.11 at 4:47 pm }

canRR get a room . i’m over the gushing about keenan o’k i know girls love men in tiny workshorts and blue singlets ,but this is a show for me as well and i want SOME BLOODY RENOVATING !!!!!!!!!!! NOT DESIGNER ROOMS ………. i have a secret RR i think that little brunette from the grey team is pretty cute but don’t tell my wife shh! maybe i should get a room ?

19 Reality Raver { 09.05.11 at 4:50 pm }

Kingfisher – I only like Keenan with his glasses on. For the record I did not vote for Keenan in the poll!

20 kingfisher { 09.05.11 at 4:55 pm }

RR just glasses ??? anything else . i was man enough to vote and i am 6ft 3 all man and i voted for peter . long live the wisp

21 smauge { 09.06.11 at 7:15 am }

I’d be willing to put my hand up and try and turn Peter to the hetero side. I don’t get the Keenen love. Too wimpy looking, especially for a tradie. Michael, now he’s a tradie worth perving on.
Incedentally – who DID you vote for RR?

22 Marepoppin { 09.06.11 at 11:04 am }

Yes RR tell us…. I’m disappointed to see mikey sliding down the shaggability ladder…. Come on girls…. Baz?? Really???

23 Reality Raver { 09.06.11 at 11:38 am }

Smauge and marepoppin – To be honest I can’t really remember. I think Peter Ho or Baz. I think in the end I went for Peter. I only like Keenan with glasses on. Also unlike the Elvis song I like a “a little more conversation”…. something I don’t think Keenan could provide.

24 Sal { 09.06.11 at 3:23 pm }

I Die for this show. i also have to admit its better than the block.

I cant help but feel there’s still a bit of ‘Boganity’ wafting around. (Im still not over Luke painting the Danish chair white).

Peter is a Machine and reminds me of me. Closited (no longer) Italian import with lots of flair, imagination, attention to detail and the beauty takes time master (like his bathroom panic room which he didnt get to finish). you can just see the fire in his eyes when his work is criticized even in the nicest way. The sweet simple face and acute tone hides it well. I bet he misses Tina and Lisa and if they were a team they could drive the show bankrupt for all their combined ideas.
I hope he wins as i know he has the the talent of imagination and construction.
(and yes i have a crush on him) <3
Back to Luke, im so upset that he, along with rest of the sky blue team, have been chosen to take on the task of renovating the Glebe Terrace. I just dont see any of them living in it let alone build it. I think some thing tacky is going to come out of there (i can already tell there is going to be an element of faux animal print somewhere :-/ ) With the rest of the house, the teams suit thier house to a T.
RR – Ive also been driving by the Marrickville shop and cant help but feel they should have gotten rid of the canopy out the front as its north facing and LOTS of light would go in, but i think have reverse garbage next door would be pretty cool as its super busy with brunch goes on sundays!

25 smauge { 09.06.11 at 6:26 pm }

I’m pretty sure Pete’s way out of the closet Sal! And it’s all I can do not to have a go at that canopy with a sledgehammer.
Went past both the orange and grey teams houses today and they look like the job might be done. They must be a good two months behind in the screening.

27 gayjohn { 09.30.11 at 8:46 pm }

dont understand how anyone likes the kaniving, manipulative, sneaky sly, sleazy peter.
