SBS Doing Celebrity Version Of Go Back To Where You Came From
I was not going to touch this as I had presumed it was an extremely clever April Fool’s Day joke, however at this stage it appears to be true that former Liberal Minister for Industrial Relations, Peter Reith is going to be on SBS show Go Back To Where You Came From.
This is quite a coup as Peter Reith was a member of the cabinet which probably presided over some of the harsher immigration laws this country had seen in two decades.
However what is also interesting is that SBS is dipping its toe into the celebrity reality TV genre. I would have thought it was a tad low end for them.
Like other TV networks they are using their successful reality TV show to launch a version starring celebrities. Celebrities like going on these shows to raise their profiles or promote an issue or product.
Go Back To Where You Came From filmed ordinary people who had unsympathetic views on refugees taken on a journey to show where these people came from and why they were in fact refugees. It changed their thinking and it was compelling viewing.
Now they are adding celebrities into the mix. This includes Angry Anderson, and former Celebrity Big Brother housemate, Imogen Bailey. And you wondered why I thought it was an April Fool’s Day joke?
The other celebrities to be on the show are Sydney radio announcer Mike Smith, consumer advocate Allan Asher and controversial comedian Catherine Deveny.
SBS will be calling it observational documentary, I will be calling it celebrity reality TV.
