The Voice – Carmen Smith Leaves But Was She Told To Go?

UPDATED: Channel NINE has announced that Carmen Smith the funky 28 year old backing singer will be leaving The Voice. The reason given is she has an unfair advantage because she has a significant role in the new music video from Guy Sebastian and as such would be deemed to have an unfair advantage as the show moves into the public voting stage as the video is on current release and highly visible.

WTF? Chris Sebastian is Guy Sebastian brother, and he is allowed to stay.

The Voice producers made a big deal about looking for professionals and working musicians for the show, and this has meant some great talent has been found. They said they can continue to work whilst they are on the show but now it looks like you can be too professional.

It is unclear if Joel Madden will be bringing back another singer from his team to perform.

Channel NINE’s Press Release states:

In a move determined to be in the spirit of the show, Joel Madden’s team member Carmen Smith, will leave The Voice prior to the live shows on Monday.

Carmen has a significant role in the new music video from Guy Sebastian and as such would be deemed to have an unfair advantage as the show moves into the public voting stage as the video is on current release and highly visible.

Nine Network Director of Development Adrian Swift said:  “This was not a decision we and Team Joel took lightly.  Our priority as we move into the voting period toward the finale is that all of the artists are on a level playing field.  In our business we are often confronted by these tough decisions and unfortunately at this time it’s been decided that it isn’t appropriate for her to remain in our competition. We wish Carmen well and thank her for a wonderful contribution to the show thus far.”

“It saddens me that I am leaving The Voice much earlier than I had hoped. However, I’ve loved every minute of it and respect the decision that has been made by Joel and his team,” Carmen said. “I’ve sung on Guy’s albums and been part of his band for many years so I’m thrilled to be in the clip and am looking forward to getting back to work and also working on my solo career.”

Who would you like to see brought back? And do you think it was fair that Carmen Smith has to leave The Voice?

UPDATE: The font of all TV information Michael Idato from the SMH has told me that there will be no one brought back and only one of Joel’s singers will be eliminated. Also he has written an article where he think perhaps her having to leave came because Guy Sebastian’s record company is Sony NOT Universal.

Also Channel NINE are getting a bit of a backlash on the decision if The Voice’s Facebook page is anything to go by. The only winner out of this is Guy Sebastian who now has all The Voice fans watching the clip to see what all the fuss is about.

Unfortunate, given that she can sing better than Chris S. If they follow the “fair play” order, they should bring back the singer who competed against her in the battle rounds who I am pretty certain now is the same chick who had been singing (fantastically I may add) for Choong Lim and the DWTS orchestra for years, but given it is on a rival network they won’t mention that. After a closeup of the band last Sunday it was pretty clear she was no longer there.

So long as they’re not SEEN doing this.

Carmen features on Guy’s video single right? So if she stayed on the show, she may have eventually competed directly against his brother Chris right? On merit right?

Umm – maybe Guy should have made room on his video for a few more Voice contestants.

Umm Georgie maybe Guy should have found singers OTHER than Voice contestants to appear in his music video. Ever considered that?

In the Daily Tele they write:
It is understood that once The Voice contestants reach the blind auditions, there are contractual restrictions regarding professional work.

However they don’t outline what exactly this is.

I note that it was thought to be ok for Delta to be coach to her back up singer Glen. Also Carmen was not receiving much publicity from the mainstream media and at this stage was not thought to be a front runner.

Bring back Mitchell! It is not possible, right? He is Team Seal :( :( :(

Obviously roland – but umm, how would that help Chris?

In answer to your headline question – your own post quoting the channel nine press release states, yes, she was told to go.

georgie i dont know what you mean by ‘help’. if chris and carmen had ever competed against each other,it would have been a pretty even match, publicity-wise….ie she being on guy’s video and he being guy’s brother. Both of them are pretty average anyway, truth be known.

Bring back Mahalia Barnes!!!

Chris, Guy and Carmen- all cheese machines.

It’s a record label thing – Guy Sebatian is tied to another record label, which is not a good look for the potential winner of the Voice to be part of.
I know all the judges are part of other record labels, but they won’t be winning a contract out of this.

Having watched it I gotta say I see their point. She’s not just acting as a back up singer here. She basically duets with him for the last third of the song.

Bring back the contestant she knocked out. Oh that’s right, it was someone who could actually sing – Mahalia Barnes.

She didn’t knock Mahalia Barnes out, Prinnie did.

If Guy really wanted to support Carmen’s career, why did he not give her a similar opportunity to appear on his previous videos? Why now? The timing tells me Guy is trying to take advantage of the popularity of The Voice. What a hypocrite of him to come out bashing the show’s producers. Yes, the only winner in this fiasco is Guy, because he’s getting all the free publicity as he wanted.

Totally unfair that Carmen was forced to leave. She has backed Guy Sebastian for years and as you say appearing in a video has got to have less influence than being his brother.

I believe that it is related to the record company tie ups and possibly Guy Sebastian being on the other talent show on channel 7. Of course a little bit of controversial publicity for the show does not hurt either.

I can’t believe they forced Carmen to leave as she has an unfair advantage, yet they let Chris Sebastian stay on and also Deltas own backup singer Glenn Cunningham.

Many viewers could see Glenn staying as favourtism. He is a very good singer, but thats beside the point in this situation.
