The Amazing Race Australia – Should The Boys Have Been Penalised?

Well it was a controversial episode on The Amazing Race Australia with indigenous cousins Dane and Adam penalised 30 minutes at the pitstop for breaching the rules.

They had sold off some of their items of clothing for money so they could take a tuk tuk to the pit stop. However I wonder if they still would have been in breach if they had begged? This would have been far worse in a third world country like India. It was not like the boys were flogging fake Chanel No 5 as the real thing, they in fact were selling brand new Nikes worth $150 for 200 rupee.

Personally I thought it was a bit harsh.

The episode commenced in the Phillipines with Tarryn and Ross the first to leave and the other teams close behind. What was interesting was in last week’s episode was the way it was edited it looked like it was much closer for last place between the Alpha males and the Italian Sisters. In fact the girls arrived at the pit stop over an hour later.

Not that it mattered as they all caught up at the airport to get the plane to India.

No surprise that the dippy hairdressers were very excited about it all. This literally was their spiritual homeland.

At the airport the mystery of why James was with cougar Sarah deepened. She was crappy that he would not buy her a drink and wanted her to wait to get on the plane, however once he did get her some water she reduced herself to his age and refused to drink it. Chances of this relationship going long term is zero. However props to Sarah for giving 100% in all the challenges she is not holding him back.

Joseph from the sibling team is coming across as a bit of a tool and he said  “her [Grace] weaknesses will be covered by my strengths”. Grace seems lovely and her way of dealing with him is to ignore him and do her own thing.

The other tool on the  show is Paul who thinks he is  the “master mind of the situation”. Steve wasn’t not looking real happy about THAT comment. Also I thought Steve was looking well and truly over his partner and it was only the second leg of the race. What are the chances that Steve will implode at Paul at some stage on the race?

Once they arrived at India they had to go to a temple and search each turban to find the word correct printed on them. If it was wrong they had to re-wrap it and put it back on the guys head. The Alpha’s were the last to leave here for the detour, however the Policeman got the dodgy tuk tuk driver who did not know where they were going. They ended up changing drivers.

At the Detour it was either Pull or Poo

Pull – was where the team must milk a cow and collect half a litre of milk each and Poo was to make 50 dung bricks. Most of them did pull, with the hairdressers getting good karma and were out first. Loving this team.

Sticky and Sam had the bad luck of having the bowl kicked over. This was because Sticky could not hold the bowl plus milk and they had a bad tempered cow.  They swapped challenges and ended up overtaking the italian girls on the dung brick challenge.

The Italian girls have no competitive instinct by the time Paul and Steve arrived Emilia told them the best technique for making them stick to the wall!

One of the twins gagged when her cow pooed, considering a day or so before she was chowing down on duck embryos I would have thought fresh cow pat would be nothing.

Sarah continued her high maintenance ways as she hopped out of a tuk tuk and got into another, but hey it was working for them they were actually getting to places without too much drama.

The next challenge was to do a Bollywood dance number and acting scene. That dance must have taken awhile to learn as all teams were up the front of their backing dancers.

The hairdressers nailed the dance but the stuffed up the hindi dialogue so out came the aura spray that rectified their delivery. They were second to finish after Sticky and Sam who nailed it in one go, but the hairdressers somehow got ahead as they were leaving. But this lead disappeared and the dippy hippies ended up arriving third at the pitstop.

Sticky and Sam were first to the pitstop not a bad feat considering they switched during the detour, and they won a trip to the Japanese Moto GP. They were thrilled. The cheerleaders who also made up time at the Bollywood challenge came in second.

Adam and Dane were broke and had run out of cash. Tarryn and Ross were going to buy train tickets for them both but could not get on the right line and they did not have enough to give them money for a tuk tuk. Dane and Adam just told them to go and that is when they sold off their gear. They arrived seventh but then were given the 30 minute time penalty and unfortunately for them the Italian girls arrived three minutes before the time period finished and they were eliminated. For the second week in a row the girls have lucked out and will continue to be in the race.

Order of arrival at the pitstop:

1. Sticky and Sam

2. Cheerleaders – Michelle and Jo

3. Hairdressers – Sue and Teresa

4. Tarryn and Ross

5. Paul and Steve

6. Kym and Donna

7.The cops – Shane and Andrew

8.Joseph and Grace

9. James and Sarah

10. Lucy and Emilia

11. Adam and Dane (Eliminated)

Awesome review RR – LOVING this series almost as much as Survivor! Can not believe it is not rating better, although it wont lose any viewers it is awesome tv.

Love the Hairdressers and the rockabilly couple Kim & Donna, and also agree that the Sister Grace is a tough chick, firstly the way she ate those Embryos and then her competitve streak!

I love this show! I was so sad to see the boys penalised last night I would’ve liked to see those Italian sisters gone. Some of the teams are a bit annoying but they are most definately entertaining!

Agree Trent about Grace, she is the trooper of the team!

Thanks for the recap RR, unfortunately I closed my eyes 10 minutes into the ep and didn’t open them again until it was all over.

Sad to see Adam and Dane were eliminated, I really would have liked to see them go further. They made great role models for the younger Koori population and just as you spoke of Amina on the MC thread – broke down stereotypes.

Think I’m going to have to get myself a recorder.

I missed the first ep but caught it last night and am happy that it looks just as enjoyable as last year!

Perhaps it would get better ratings if they put it on earlier. I’d watch it over Masterchef or the Block any day.

Great recap as always, RR. I really like how they’re managing to make the show just as exciting as the American version and, in some way, even better.

I believe the reason that they don’t allow bartering is that it slightly biases richer contestants. While Adam and Dane were able to bring expensive Nikes with them on the race, I don’t see how Mark and Bopper (from the last American season) would have been able to do the same.

The bartering of personal items has occurred on an American season in the past where the penalty was actually 2 hours so I was surprised by how leniant the Australia version was.

You are right, RR, am loving this series and hope following episodes are just as good. I can’t remember who did the ‘over the top’ crying but it was hilarious!

Aww poo they were fun, it seems obvious some gullible teams are getting ripped off with fares, hate teams going out like that.
Ratings – they have timed this badly, there’s a glut of RTV & all that jubilee stuff, olympics coming.

So disappointed the Koori guys were eliminated so early. Shades of Moz and Mo. Hoa annoying is Paul? What a dick. Good to see Sticky and Sam in first place, I like them, and the cheerleaders are doing pretty well too despite looking like Brynne Edelstein’s little sisters.

Just getting the hang of it. Didn’t watch the first episode but will get to know the contestants soon. Don’t like the couple, Sarah and her boyfriend. I don’t think she is tough enough.

I thought the penalty was going to be unfair until they announced it would only be 30mins. Still very sad to see them go, they were one of my favs.

Loving the fact that for each week that d*ckwad Paul is in the show, he is massively reducing any chance he has of getting employed, laid or befriended in the future.

The cops really seem to be struggling they are really quite useless….
I do like the Italian sisters – they wont last long but they have a great attitiude.
The twins are going really well – Chunks, you hit the nail on the head with that comparison – loved it – , am hoping they stay in it for a while – hope Paul gets eliminiated quite soon – I do feel sorry for his partner and yes RR, I hope he explodes soon!

Thanks Gy for clarification on the rules too – was very sad the cousins left- great eye candy plus they were really seemed like genuine guys!

Lol Davo – that’s really funny.
