Masterchef Australia – Kylie Dishes It Up To Tomislav

So the goal posts have been shifted again in an immunity challenges. Kylie gets one other contestant to help her cook three courses. This could be an advantage as you don’t have to rely on other people as much, but it does mean time wise it is harder.

However she did get to pick the ingredient as well and out of bread and butter she selected bread. Props to the production for managing to get two major sponsors Coles and Western Star on the ingredients table.

George Calombaris said he would have picked butter, but  that was a no brainer as he has an advertising deal with Western Star.

Kylie was cooking against Tomislav Martinovic who has worked for Matt Moran, Guillame and Heston Blummenthal. However I thought Kylie’s menu was more sophisticated than his.

Her menu was Gazpacho with Rye Bread Icecream, main was Herb Crusted Blue Eye Trevalla, and Dessert was Caramel Pannacotta with French Toast.

Kylie gave Mindy the responsibility for the main and she cooked entree and dessert.

Tomislav whilst waiting to start helped stir Kylie’s caramel pannacotta and told her to add salt. He also hinted that it was very sweet, and suggested her next batch of caramel should be dark.

Kylie was also having issues with the colour of her Gazpacho as she said it was the hue of baby vomit.  To turn it from green/brown she then started chucking more tomatoes in. Andy yelled out from the balcony and suggested capsicums which turned it the nice red colour. She thought the taste was getting there and then threw in a huge amount of salt.

Matt Preston thought the cold soup was absolutely delicious, but Gary did not like the ice cream.

Was Mindy trying to over cook the fish by putting it in the oven too early? Matt Moran counselled her against this. Not that it mattered it did look a bit dry when they were dishing it up. Gary was not a fan of the herb crust. He also thought the dish was not modern enough. Something Matt said it does not matter it is about the taste.

Kylie’s dessert was liked a lot by Gary.

Tomislav’s menu was much simpler. He made Scallop Tartare with Fried Bread – the judges thought the tartare was a bit simple, but liked the fried bread.

For main he made scotch fillet and with a ginger bread sauce it looked delicious Gary loved it and was surprised it was more asian in flavour. Gary said Matt thought the ginger bread sauce over powered the steak.

Tomislav’s dessert of French Toast with Grilled Figs and Cream reminded Gary of the bread pudding his mother used to cook him. Funny how he didn’t complain about the dish not being modern on this occasion.

The judging was going to be close with Kylie winning entree, and Tomislav the main, and it was no surprise that Kylie’s more sophisticated dessert won her an immunity pin.

It was interesting that Kylie won it off the back of her own two dishes and it was Mindy’s one that lost. So far for Mindy she has lost four out of four dishes in the immunity pin challenges but somehow got herself a pin.

After decades of competent adulthood, it must be bloody awful to hit menopause (or develop mental illness) and suddenly have less control over your ability to regulate your own thoughts and emotions.

Also, people can be horrid well before menopause and carry on being horrid right through it. Who’s to say.

Heh Georgie – Hope you are not serious with this comment – ‘No mention of relationships in her life other than family and has not had children due to a hysterectomy at age 39. Bitter and a little twisted maybe?’
Think ya generalising a bit……………….

3 smauge { 07.05.12 at 6:06 pm }

I always thought when you had a hysterectomy it brought on early menopause. Might have to do the research on that…

4 Sioux Denim { 07.05.12 at 6:40 pm }

It all depends Smauge on whether it was a partial or a full hysterectomy….. lots of variables and each person reacts in so mny different ways.

I know I have said I am a fan of Deb’s so I probably sound biased but I really can empathise with her on her mood swings – you really have no control over it – it is very frustrating and yes, there are many forms of medication you can take but she appears to come across as trying to follow a hollistic/natural approach to her health… maybe she is going down that path…………

5 Moonstruck { 07.05.12 at 6:52 pm }

But would it last 10 years?

6 Georgie { 07.05.12 at 8:02 pm }

Speculation Sioux Denim, pure speculation – hence the ‘…maybe?’ Speculating is what we do best here, in the absence of facts hey!

7 Sioux Denim { 07.05.12 at 8:11 pm }

Yes, your right Georgie – just probably feel for her as I so know where she coming from………..
Indeed Moonstruck – it can hang around for a lot longer too – or less!

I really wonder whether Amina would get SO much air time if she wasn’t a hijab-wearing Muslim. Honestly, if you add up all the times the camera focuses on her, statistically it is way beyond the average. Also the judges comments are ALWAYS softer for her.
Imagine Amina without her head covering and then think of how she would be treated. Just the same as the others…

9 smauge { 07.05.12 at 10:17 pm }

My liking of Amina was purely based on cooking ability and personality. She didn’t fall back on a sob story, she just seemed so down to earth. Her cooking is interesting because it was a real mix of cultures and I really think that’s what the judges loved about her.
It’s always hard to speculate on such things, as we can never truly know how we would see her without the hijab. But one thing is for sure, she didn’t make it that far because of it. She had the skills to back up her position. Unfortunately you are only as good as your last dish, and hers wasn’t the best. It sounded like it might have been second best, and in any other elimination, that would have been good enough.
Filippo’s gone. Amina’s gone. I don’t know who to cheer for now! Any suggestions?

My favs are going to Italy, smauge. Julia and Deb…plenty of room on the Deb train. The crazy train.

Tuscan tantrums here we come!

11 Andy Pandy { 07.05.12 at 10:32 pm }

I think I might go for Deb now, but I think the judges want a guy to win. The invisible ones, Wade, Andy and Beau all seem to be brilliant now, where were they hiding all this time? Pity we never got to see their progress along the way.

12 Sioux Denim { 07.05.12 at 10:38 pm }

Yeah, yeah, yeah all over in WA – I dont sign on anymore whilst it on and sorry if I have harped on about it BDD.

Yeah it was a boy fest tonight – I had a feeling when Andy was in bottom 3 he ws safe immediaately…oh well, hope Amina does well out of this – watching the flashbacks she really did serve up some ripper meals – moreso than anyone else featured …. didnt we oly hear of Adam too when he made Top 10?

13 EH { 07.05.12 at 10:56 pm }

Smauge – You have summed up everything I wanted to say & said it better. Thank you.

Saw that coming & will start cheering for the pretty one – Andy!! ~frantically practising my leg wrap skill~

14 brain dead dave { 07.05.12 at 11:10 pm }

No worries, Sioux Denim.

15 Sioux Denim { 07.06.12 at 12:01 am }

Smauge – you are so spot on……………

16 Morgan { 07.06.12 at 6:28 am }

I’m sorry but last night’s results was a load of shit. Debra getting through on BRUCHETTA? REALLY, JUDGES? Amina should have been safe after that first round leaving Andy to knock out Debra and Jules.

So the rumours were true, Amina dosen’t make the Top 10. Deb better thank her lucky stars she’s a good cook, because if she was like Sun or Dani I’d just be livid.

Yeah, I take this show way too seriously. 😛

17 smauge { 07.06.12 at 7:44 am }

Sorry BDD and Andy Pandy, I’m going to have to leave you two alone on the Deb train and join EH on (or fight her off) the Andy bandwagon. If I can’t be inspired by the cooking, I at least want to have a decent bit of eye candy to look at.

18 Cookie Monster { 07.09.12 at 7:37 am }

And so it continues – no credibility at all! The producers and judges are trying their best to give the prize to Mindy and so are getting rid of all competition – Amina. Now they have Audra in their sights and then Kylie. The remaining cooks are all so useless that they have no hope anyway so they dont have to bother with them at present. Mindy will use Aminas immunity pin to stay in when they put her in one ‘go home’ challenge to make it look like they are ‘impartial’. That is why the immunity challenges have no rules. If MIndy did not already have one that she did not earn she would be able to choose 18 people to help her. what a joke.

19 Cookie Monster { 07.09.12 at 7:46 am }

These judges must be kidding. Atom Ant Alice,s beautiful black nobs with that green thing would not be selected by anyone in a restaurant – let alone eaten. George the midget says it was ‘modern’ – yep post apocolyptic modern, that would be the necessary conditions before anyone would choose that rubbish – enough to make me turn cannibal.
