Masterchef Australia – Kylie Dishes It Up To Tomislav
So the goal posts have been shifted again in an immunity challenges. Kylie gets one other contestant to help her cook three courses. This could be an advantage as you don’t have to rely on other people as much, but it does mean time wise it is harder.
However she did get to pick the ingredient as well and out of bread and butter she selected bread. Props to the production for managing to get two major sponsors Coles and Western Star on the ingredients table.
George Calombaris said he would have picked butter, but that was a no brainer as he has an advertising deal with Western Star.
Kylie was cooking against Tomislav Martinovic who has worked for Matt Moran, Guillame and Heston Blummenthal. However I thought Kylie’s menu was more sophisticated than his.
Her menu was Gazpacho with Rye Bread Icecream, main was Herb Crusted Blue Eye Trevalla, and Dessert was Caramel Pannacotta with French Toast.
Kylie gave Mindy the responsibility for the main and she cooked entree and dessert.
Tomislav whilst waiting to start helped stir Kylie’s caramel pannacotta and told her to add salt. He also hinted that it was very sweet, and suggested her next batch of caramel should be dark.
Kylie was also having issues with the colour of her Gazpacho as she said it was the hue of baby vomit. To turn it from green/brown she then started chucking more tomatoes in. Andy yelled out from the balcony and suggested capsicums which turned it the nice red colour. She thought the taste was getting there and then threw in a huge amount of salt.
Matt Preston thought the cold soup was absolutely delicious, but Gary did not like the ice cream.
Was Mindy trying to over cook the fish by putting it in the oven too early? Matt Moran counselled her against this. Not that it mattered it did look a bit dry when they were dishing it up. Gary was not a fan of the herb crust. He also thought the dish was not modern enough. Something Matt said it does not matter it is about the taste.
Kylie’s dessert was liked a lot by Gary.
Tomislav’s menu was much simpler. He made Scallop Tartare with Fried Bread – the judges thought the tartare was a bit simple, but liked the fried bread.
For main he made scotch fillet and with a ginger bread sauce it looked delicious Gary loved it and was surprised it was more asian in flavour. Gary said Matt thought the ginger bread sauce over powered the steak.
Tomislav’s dessert of French Toast with Grilled Figs and Cream reminded Gary of the bread pudding his mother used to cook him. Funny how he didn’t complain about the dish not being modern on this occasion.
The judging was going to be close with Kylie winning entree, and Tomislav the main, and it was no surprise that Kylie’s more sophisticated dessert won her an immunity pin.
It was interesting that Kylie won it off the back of her own two dishes and it was Mindy’s one that lost. So far for Mindy she has lost four out of four dishes in the immunity pin challenges but somehow got herself a pin.
