Masterchef All Stars – Who Will Win?

Masterchef All Stars starts tonight barely letting fans of the show gain their equilibrium before it kicks off tonight for a three week festival to see who is the best of the best. The foodies Olympics you could call it.

There are four contestants from the first three series of the show:

  • Season One – Julie Goodwin, Poh Ling Yeow, Chris Badenoch, and Justine Schofield.
  • Season Two – Marion Grasby, Jonathan Daddia, Callum Haan and Aaron Harvie.
  • Season Three – Kumar Pereira, Hayden Quinn, Dani Venn and Kate Bracks.

My understanding is they will be competing in teams. So it is also series versus series until one person is left standing.

I think the people who have been doing a lot of cooking will be the winner so someone like Julie Goodwin, or Poh. Unfortunately I think the pressure will get to Kumar and he will be an early casualty.

Adam Liaw was unable to participate due to his filming commitments with SBS. However is there someone you would have liked to have seen in All-Stars?

Who do you think will be standing there in the end?

Season 2 hands down! Always had a love/hate relationship with Jonathan while the show was on but loved him in the end. He’s one of my favourite contestants ever.

Still don’t understand where everyone got the rumour that Andy was competing in all-stars?

2 Dunbi { 07.26.12 at 3:18 pm }

Season Two, although I think Season One will give them a run for their money.

3 Reality Raver { 07.26.12 at 3:29 pm }

Ari – I think it was wrong as they did not know the winner until yesterday.

Dunbi – Season two is strong but I just realised the first challenge tonight is the croquembouche and do they have any dessert or pastry specialists? Callum? maybe. Whereas season one has Poh and Julia, and Three has Kate Bracks

4 Culinary Boner { 07.26.12 at 3:35 pm }

Raver, maybe you need to call Julia Jenkins to ask how much cooking Chris B does.

Based on the times when I’ve been at their fine establishment I get the feeling his forte is beverage testing.

Who will win?

It won’t be the ‘ken viewers.

6 bron { 07.26.12 at 3:40 pm }

season two, devo that adam isn’t in it though.

7 bron { 07.26.12 at 3:40 pm }

and dani? really?

8 TickledPink { 07.26.12 at 3:50 pm }

Season 1 for the win.. I think they are the strongest team.. only time will tell! looking forward to it

9 Joseph Skyrim { 07.26.12 at 3:52 pm }

I think season 1 has the strongest team while season 3 has the weakest. That said the people I ‘ll be cheering for are Justine (s1), Jono (s2), Aaron (s2), and Hayden (s3). Probably in that order, hoping that one of the “J”s win! (even if it is Julie again ) :P

Nice to see they’re all doing this for charity though.

After reading http://www.throng.com.au/2012/05/masterchef-where-are-they-now-seasons-1-to-3, I knew that my dreams of seeing S1′s Sam and Aaron on All-Stars were dashed

11 wallah { 07.26.12 at 4:06 pm }

@ CB “Based on the times when I’ve been at their fine establishment I get the feeling his forte is beverage testing.” Based the look of “I just drank a litre of duty free single malt and have the hangover to prove it” from the Hong Kong getaway, I’d have to agree with you there.
Season 3 ruined the show, I’d be surprised if any of them progress anywhere. They must know how to cook, because they seem to be investing more time in them than I would, based on what I saw last year. Which wasn’t much, thanks to the magic of tivo. Maybe they’ll do a fried chicken and milkshake challenge, or throw in another Olympic athlete to cook against.

12 Mia { 07.26.12 at 4:10 pm }

Replace Callum with Alvin Quah and Dani with Billy Law and it would have been 100% perfect casting for me.

I hope Dani has leant how to toast bread by now.

13 PollyB { 07.26.12 at 4:11 pm }

Don’t know about chicken and milkshake, but definitely a sausage sizzle in there. I know.

14 Culinary Boner { 07.26.12 at 4:23 pm }

lol wallah
I’ll also be interested to see if his hat is the same as he wore 4 years ago, but it’ll take someone more eagle-eyed than me to spot the difference.
I’m sort of looking forward to this show now, but my inbuilt reality sensors keep buzzing the warning that Shine is doing the production, so will somehow manage to curdle the concept.

15 lulu { 07.26.12 at 4:23 pm }

Exactly, Mia.

16 wallah { 07.26.12 at 4:31 pm }

I reckon Shine did a pretty decent job this season, and this is probably a vehicle to test things out for the next season to see if they work or not with people that are known entities, without the pressure of having to come up with huge ratings. For me the differences between s3 and s4 are many, but the fact that I would get home and watch the whole episode instead fast forward it was the most telling.

17 Jess { 07.26.12 at 4:37 pm }

The second season is a lot weaker without Adam. The top-ranked contestant is number two, Callum, who…let’s face it, was never that great of a cook. (Unless he continued with his apprenticeship and is actually really good now~)
The good thing about All Stars, at least, is that there’s less producer-vested interest in the overall winner. So hopefully we can do away with accusations of favouritism and rigged results this time around.

18 Chunks { 07.26.12 at 4:39 pm }

Season Three has the weakest team but I guess it all depends on what they’ve been doing since. For example, has Marion done any cooking or is she just packaging spices? And then there’s the croquembouche challenge right off the bat.

19 JKo { 07.26.12 at 4:45 pm }

I agree with Mia #18 :) At least those guys have better screen presence.

20 Daze { 07.26.12 at 4:46 pm }

I also loved Tom Mosby Mia, and yes yes 1,000 times for Alvin and Billy – if only but I guess they are tied up with other commitments.
Would love to see Justine win – such a nice nice person
Yes Jess, hopefully because it’s for charity it won’t be rigged this time
Dani doing a croquembouche? I-don’t-think-so
Anyhoo, will be fun to see them all back

21 Georgie { 07.26.12 at 4:47 pm }

Aaron Harvie was probably my all time favourite followed by Jono. Hope to see them both kick some …

22 Chunks { 07.26.12 at 4:49 pm }

Ok ladies, which of you was it?

Fame has already brought interesting and “hairy” situations, including a close encounter with a besotted female fan.

“We were out at a pub and she came up and announced her love for me,” Allen said. “It wasn’t once or twice, it was three times and she proceeded to ask me to marry her and it got a little weird there. It was tough [to get out of]. It was very, very tough. Obviously I didn’t want to be rude or anything, I just sort of sneakily removed myself from the situation.”

23 planb { 07.26.12 at 4:52 pm }

I am barracking for all of Season One:
Julie Goodwin (oh, yes, indeed), Poh Ling Yeow, Chris Badenoch, and Justine Schofield.

From Season Two – Aaron Harvie.

From Season Three – Kumar Mahadevan, Hayden Quinn, and Dani Venn .

(Ducks for cover.)

I don’t enjoy mob attacks, and I didn’t find ‘Legohead’ the least bit funny, and I expect I won’t be finding it pleasant or funny in this All Stars season.

24 librarygirl { 07.26.12 at 4:56 pm }

Poh, Justine and Marion = any of the three to win.
Can’t wait to see Jon0 – what a great character he was!

25 Culinary Boner { 07.26.12 at 5:03 pm }

Chunks@22.
Cripes, Alvin Purple redux?

Old bloke’s hint to Andy – every root you knock back now is one you’ll never get back later in life, even if you is Geoffrey Edelstein.

26 planb { 07.26.12 at 5:10 pm }

“So hopefully we can do away with accusations of favouritism and rigged results this time around.”

Fat chance of that! Wouldn’t it be nice though.

27 Chunks { 07.26.12 at 5:11 pm }

lol @ CB.

28 Paul { 07.26.12 at 5:11 pm }

Season 2 FTW although I have a spot spot for Justine !!!!!

29 Paul { 07.26.12 at 5:14 pm }

planb,
Is your user name after the UK muso?

30 Ari { 07.26.12 at 5:24 pm }

@Chunks – That is actually so creepy. Poor guy.

31 planb { 07.26.12 at 5:44 pm }

No. There’s a restaurant also, called Plan B, I think?

32 lulu { 07.26.12 at 5:50 pm }

Planb, sure, MC is totally about cooking skills; every outcome is on the up n’ up, producers’ input and obligations to sponsors have nothing to do with it, and all the hours of research spent on marketability, demographics and public opinion counts for naught.
You’re right, straightforward cookin.’ … and Andy Allen is the best amateur cook in Australia .. maybe even the universe.

How is life in Kansas?

I think that even Andy would be chuckling.

33 Bruiser Brody { 07.26.12 at 5:52 pm }

Hah, Dani is pictured wearing a “Legoman” around her neck like a pendant in the publicity shots…
At least someone gets it!!
I hope some Lovejoy will still think of the children!

As an aside, did anyone notice the overt something-ism when the 3 teams were selected last nite? Audra = all-Asian; Julia = all-blonde; Andy = all blokes!
Deb, Mario & Andrew never had a chance in this comp! (apart from being bloody average)
Says something about the law of diminishing returns in reality series…

34 Dunbi { 07.26.12 at 5:52 pm }

RR – Perhaps not season 2 for the croquembouche!! Really looking forward to seeing how they all tackle it.
Do wish Billy was in the show.

35 Lucy { 07.26.12 at 5:56 pm }

I’d like to see Aaron Harvie do well. I know his uncle and there are so many similarities between them. Sure he is a really nice guy like his uncle.
I am also a fan of Julie. Would like to see her do well too.

36 planb { 07.26.12 at 6:01 pm }

wtf , Lulu? You sure read a lot into a lighthearted comment.

“How is life in Kansas?”

Offensive, AND patronising.

37 lulu { 07.26.12 at 6:10 pm }

wtf planb, “Offensive AND patronising?”

You sure read a lot into a lighthearted comment.
Zing.

38 Georgie { 07.26.12 at 6:10 pm }

Bruiser Brody #33 – ROFL.

lulu #37 – ditto with tears.

39 planb { 07.26.12 at 6:16 pm }

Zing. I don’t think so. You presumed to know what I think, what I meant, and to ridicule my level of sophistication.

40 Whitewine { 07.26.12 at 6:18 pm }

RR…it’s Kumar pereira..Kumar mahadevan is the chef:)…..Go Jonoooo……am I the only one who finds him cute???

41 Carls { 07.26.12 at 7:13 pm }

Goooooo Jono! Love his character and ability to cook to boot. Though I fear his lack of cooking since the show (think he continued in his lawyer gig after Masterchef) will be a bit detrimental to his chances. I love both Season 1 & 2. I can’t pick. Really makes you realise how good they were relative to the crop they came up with for Season 3 & 4.

42 Georgie { 07.26.12 at 8:07 pm }

This is really enjoyable – without all the usual manufactured drama and bullshit. A bit of fun.

43 librarygirl { 07.26.12 at 8:28 pm }

Georgie, I loved it . Some big persoanalities there – great viewing.

44 lulu { 07.26.12 at 8:31 pm }

BBrody, ‘the law of dimishing returns’ .. brilliant.
Thx, Georgie.
And true, that was a hoot – loved Hayden … just casually removes the metal cone and strolls off. He was one year too early for the ‘dude’ winner script.
Aaron was fun, as was Dani, who took her nickname in good stride (maybe advice, but who cares?). Yes, we saw the close-up.
Kumarrrr … don’t you want to just wrap him up and take him home?

45 Morgan { 07.26.12 at 8:38 pm }

Great first episode of All Stars, although Season 2 was pretty robbed in that challenge.

Mia – 100% agree with you! Alvin and Billy would’ve been great additions to All Stars!

46 Bolders { 07.26.12 at 8:58 pm }

That was a great first episode – and funny. Agree if they stay away from the producer’s fake drama we could see an enjoyable series.

47 Bolders { 07.26.12 at 9:06 pm }

Don’t you just hate it when your croquembouche limps to the side under close scrutiny ?

48 planb { 07.26.12 at 9:07 pm }

“Legohead” wasn’t just an amusing nickname. It began with a regular on Beyond Big Brother forum posting a picture of a lego figure that had a hairdo much like the one Dani Venn wore on her season, merely noting the similarity. It then got picked up by the SMH recaps. It then was used by the unwashed masses as a rallying cry and an epithet of hatred and abuse. Dani received death threats, as well as an outpouring of online abuse.

The name is still used to dehumanise and objectify her in many online forums. She shows great courage in my opinion for turning back up on MC AllStars, and for showing her detractors she isn’t cowed by what happened to her as a result of appearing on a tv show, and being thrust too far forward in the edit, and used by the editors as a constant recapper in the series, largely because very few of season three were able to string more than a few words together in a succinct and amusing way.

I mentioned I found it offensive before the season began tonight because I didn’t want to sit here in silence, stuffing down how uncomfortable this sort of thing makes me. I offer this brief history to clarify what the name came to mean, for those who did not follow last season or the online bloodbath in regard to Dani Venn.

49 Morgan { 07.26.12 at 9:14 pm }

I agree, planb. I’m not a fan of Dani by any means but I have seen a lot of the abuse and hate she has got from some places and it was all taken way too far. No one deserves that sort of treatment.

50 Robl { 07.26.12 at 9:21 pm }

Jonno or Chris to win. S1 was difficult to watch after seeing S2 first (mainly due to that weasily little **** Sam) but Chris was the stand out.

51 wallah { 07.26.12 at 9:24 pm }

@ planb “largely because very few of season three were able to string more than a few words together in a succinct and amusing way.”
Yep, and she now represents all that was bad about last season. The interminable recaps, the poor cooking, the hubris. Matt Preston digging through her blackened fried chicken, trying in vain to find at least one positive of what was put before them just summed up that whole season, let alone the 2 seconds of Marcus Samuelsson while someone was trying to use a Westpac debit card.

52 Ari { 07.26.12 at 9:38 pm }

Still watching the show. Really love Jonathan. Didn’t appreciate him as much as I should have in season 2 and I’m glad I get to see him again. He’s amazing. One of my favourite contestants.

Although I AM having season 4 withdrawals. Watching that new intro almost made me tear up because I was looking forward to TK’s weird dance, Amina, Andy’s mussels, Ben’s cheesy taco smile and everything. Gosh I love season 4.

53 lulu { 07.26.12 at 10:18 pm }

Ooh planb, quite a diatribe.
Has someone become acquainted with Mr. Thesaurus?

Not being familiar with the origins of the nickname, ‘Legohead,’ I appreciate your effort to elevate it to Dickensian proportions: ‘unwashed masses,’ ‘epithet of hatred,’ … I’m giddy with hyperbole-overdose.

Dani was cool tonight and wore the lego around her neck like a badge of honour (death threats? please) … didn’t seem ‘dehumanised’ or ‘objectified’ at all. Plus, you intimated she was edited poorly … thought it was all about the cooking ? tehe

If you’re an afficionado of ‘ reality’, you should appreciate the fickle nature of all that comes with it.

54 Maz { 07.26.12 at 10:30 pm }

Liked tonight’s episode. Far better than anything that was served up in MC4.

We get that croquembouche is hell but could Zumbo delivered another version of pastry hell? :)

55 Izobel2 { 07.26.12 at 11:04 pm }

I watched the entire episode with a smile on my face. What fun.

56 Anna Muscat { 07.27.12 at 1:48 am }

I think Mia from comments needs her head read. What, replace Callum with Alvin. Are you normal?
Callum is the one of the best young cooks in the country. Also, he is so down to earth, and a really likeable humble young man.

57 planb { 07.27.12 at 9:44 am }

Yes, death threats. There were facebook hate pages set up, etc. A brief mention of some of it here:

Venn underwent just that experience. While MasterChef was on air last year, social media sites were abuzz with people who felt hatred towards her. One Facebook user suggested: “I think we need to do what people did with Melanie [from My Kit-chen Rules]. Send Dani death threats.”

It’s a disturbingly common motif. “We’ve seen people literally making death threats against people who simply came on a renovating show to do their best,” Cress says. “What’s that about? It can only be because they are comparing them to somebody else and deciding they’re not as nice, and so therefore they’re deserving of death. It’s amazing how much it polarises people.

“It’s not many of us who get 15 death threats in our inbox at the end of a day’s work. That’s something we have to manage really carefully.”

Venn was able to remain distanced from the negative comments.

“The facelessness of the internet probably means that for people who don’t have much power or anything really going on in their lives, the internet is an outlet,” she says. “And it just snowballs. If one person thinks something and others get on it and then all of a sudden thousands are like ‘we don’t like Dani’. But as soon as I was eliminated it stopped, and they moved on to the next person they didn’t like. I haven’t had any negative experiences in a real-life situation.”

58 Paul { 07.27.12 at 9:56 am }

Well said again planb.

IMO its important to stop the snowball effect at its source.

I really wish the law was more vigilant with these attacks. I know that people in the UK have been jailed for making death threats on twitter.

59 Mia { 07.27.12 at 9:58 am }

@Anna Muscat: “I think Mia from comments needs her head read. What, replace Callum with Alvin. Are you normal?”

Depends who you ask, Anna. :)

60 planb { 07.27.12 at 10:22 am }

Oh, and fyi, Lulu, I have never said it is all about the cooking.

But, for me, it is not all about the spite.

61 lulu { 07.27.12 at 11:33 am }

planb, MC is the only ‘reality’ show I watch and only for two seasons … my only guilty pleasure … so I’m not au fait with all the other kitchen/singing/renovating/whatever stuff.

If there were death threats (a serious offence) on facebook, they would easily be trackable. Were any arrests made? The cynic in me believes that a lot of it would’ve been a beat up to garner sympathy and extra publicity for the show. A common ploy for tv networks.

Now I’ll contradict myself; I’m sure there were d/threats. Meaningless? Yep. Unpleasant? Sure … and probably emanating from disconnected teenaged girls, arguably the most terrifying subspecies on the planet.

At least Dani understands – feckless as it may be, she put her hand up, and that’s showbiz.

ps. Yes, you implied it.
pps. Never underestimate spite.

62 planb { 07.28.12 at 9:49 am }

Not where you’re concerned, darl.

63 Anna Muscat { 07.28.12 at 3:26 pm }

Mia from comments, you say, ‘DEPENDS WHO YOU ASK” i don’t need to ask anybody. Not only did Callum make and pipe about 6 trays of those puff balls, he also started the custard as well.
Alvin would have still been piping his mixture, when it was Jonathan’s turn to take over.
Who went out when they made the V8 cake, (i think that’s what it’s called) – Alvin, not Callum.

64 Anna Muscat { 07.28.12 at 3:36 pm }

a quck mreminder to Dunbi. Callum and Marion make great desserts for Season 2. Poh and Julie for Season 1 and Kate for Season 3. Next year (if they have a challenge) it will be Kylie and Julia. Julia will then whip everybody’s backside, She has been asked by the man himself Adriano Zumbo to join his pastry team. Julia has accepted.
And as far as Seaon 1, they made the croqenbouche for one of their challenges, yet they did so badly. What went wrong? They still had the same amount of time as the other 2 teams. Just goes to show – they are not as good as what they thought, especially Poh, she is such a silly woman.

65 Dunbi { 07.28.12 at 3:49 pm }

Thanks Muscat. I shall stick to Season Two. Season 1 went wrong because Julie’s dough was not right and then instead of Poh taking Zumbo’s advice on how to get it right, she chose to ignore him. From then on they were doomed!

Re law of diminishing returns: Ma$terchef Final Weak ratings

Ma$terchef inaugural Finale 2009 ~3.7 million
2010~more than 4 million~record
2011~2.659 million
2012-2.2 million.

67 Paul { 07.28.12 at 4:44 pm }

Sort of like complaining that Michael Clarke only scored 150 instead of 350.

68 Daze { 07.28.12 at 5:17 pm }

Hey bdd, is it freezing in Adelaide? Yes the ratings have diminished somewhat so it’s just the regular fans that keep the 2mill up; 4mill was a huge record and (possibly the success went to 50 Shades of G&G’s heads)

69 lulu { 07.28.12 at 5:38 pm }

“darl?’ .. lol

70 Oshada { 07.28.12 at 6:27 pm }

Those ratings mirror my engagement with the show quite well! Season 2 was my absolute favourite, followed by 1, 3 and 4.

71 brain dead dave { 07.28.12 at 7:01 pm }

Unfortunately, since around 2000 , scores and results in international games of cricket cannot necessarily be taken at face value.

72 Georgie { 07.28.12 at 7:15 pm }

Agree bdd – it depends who is playing. Some huge batting scores have been recorded against Bangladesh for example.

73 Ari { 07.28.12 at 7:35 pm }

I’m surprised season 3 got as much viewers as season 4. Season 3 was unexciting and I did not even care who won. I actually don’t remember paying attention to the finale at all.

For me it’s S2, S4, S1 and then S3.

74 Anna Muscat { 08.10.12 at 1:53 am }

Can’t stand the judges always picking Kate as the winner of the masterchef allstars challenges. Give someone else a turn in the limelight. I like Kate, but i am getting so sick of Gary and George picking their favourite (Kate).
The judges ate all of Callum’s dessert, he did such a great job, yet they still picked Kate.
What is wrong with you mutton heads(judges)?
Give the rest of the allstars a chance, not always your FAVOURITE.

75 Anna Muscat { 08.11.12 at 1:36 am }

Who will be standing there in the end. Those mutton head judges favourite ( i actually like her) Kate.
Julie and Callum (celebrity chef). Although i’m not impressed with Julie in the allstars, she gets frazzled under pressure. Callum was good in series 2, but is so very good now. This fine young man has a good chance to make it to the finals. But because of he judges, and her talent, Kate will be there.

76 Cassie { 08.29.12 at 1:36 pm }

I used to like Justine on the Masterchef series but after seeing her on her own show she turned me off. She is not a qualified chef yet she is condescending to her guest chefs on the show -like she knows it all. Unfortunately it all went to her head. I’d prefer her to be more humble.

77 Anna Muscat { 08.30.12 at 10:20 pm }

Hi Mia from comments. Y ou must have as happy as i was in the All Stars Finale when Callum won. He was the groomsman in Series 2 (runner up), But he was finally the BEST MAN. So derserved, and what a good judge of character i am.

78 Anna Muscat { 08.30.12 at 10:26 pm }

What a terrific Finale in the All Stars challenge when celebrity chef Callum won. I was so very proud and very happy for him. From being the groomsman (runner up in Series 2), he was finally the BEST MAN. So deserved. Don’t all you Callum fans agree?
