Dance Moms On Lifestyle You Is Addictive Trashy TV
There is a veritable gold mine of reality shows on Lifestyle You and one of the stand outs is Dance Moms. As the show title suggests it is about stage moms and their dancing daughters. Kids who dance love it, but it also nearly made my daughter quit dance class. More on that later.
The show is set in the Abby Lee Miller Dance Academy in Pittsburg with the owner of the studio pushing her chosen six dancers to their physical and emotional limits. The mums also get into the action as well by confronting Abby and each other when they don’t think their princess is getting the chance to shine as much as they should be.
Each week the show starts of with the Abby Lee ranking the dancers in a pyramid with the not so great dancers placed up the back with the better ones showcased up the front. They then practice a routine which they then perform in competitions each week.
Sometimes the routines can be controversial, skanky dance moves, barely there costumes or in one episode of this series fake guns are used as props.
It is fun and the girls are undoubtedly talented and Abby Lee is perfect reality TV casting sometimes you think she is just truly awful however in other ways she is likeable. The story arc in season two is the ongoing feud with the Candy Apples Dance Academy, the introduction of another dance mum and her daughter Kendall into the mix, and the ongoing competing of the girls.
I was hesitant to let Miss 7 to watch, but the preview discs arrived in school holidays and hell I was desperate. My hesitation was about her picking up new skanky dance moves to add to the many she already has and the fighting that goes on. Interestingly she missed all that but picked up something else and that was the rankings, she realised in her performance classes she was always up the back. She realised she was a Paige not a Maddie.
I of course handled her demand to quit with all the mothering skills at my disposal and said “this has to do with Dance Moms?” She of course denied it probably knowing her favourite show was about to be put on ice. After much coaxing she decided to stick at her performance classes after my explanation that the corps de ballet is just as important as the soloists.
This shows is going to appeal to people who has ever stepped into a dance studio either as a student or mother.
Dance Moms is up to episode five tonight on Lifestyle You at 9.30pm.
