Masterchef All Stars – The Zeus Pressure Test

It was game on for the final six All Stars, with the pressure test consisting of Zeus – The God of God’s dessert made by George Calombaris. It consisted of thirteen elements. It was allegedly Zeus, his eight mistresses and his wife. Yeah you do the maths.

This was Chris Badenoch’s living nightmare but he ended up being a well oiled machine.

Kate Bracks just got on with it, Julie made a mess but struggled through as this dessert was not in her comfort zone either. She ended up having trouble with the chocolate tuile but once she realised she needed to heat up the glucose to 150 degrees Celsius, not Fahrenheit things got better for her.

Not so much for Justine who had to do the tuile twice as well but also her chocolate mousse split when she over beat it.

Meanwhile Chris was going along so smoothly he even felt confident enough to add more vinegar to the Salt and Vinegar Sticks.

Dani was in all sorts of bother. She was way behind in tempering the chocolate and it was very lumpy.  In the end she served up the dish with three elements missing.

Chris and Callum both got all 13 elements on the plate, whereas Kate missed two element as was Justine.

Everything was great on Chris’s dish except for his chocolate.

Kate’s chocolate was tempered however she was missing the pear and one other element.

By the way the extraordinary waste of gold again tonight was again shocking. They were barely eating the gold covered chocolate “wife” just cracking it.

Julie did not put her “wife” or the chocolate in the box but said she was on the plate “limp” prepping the judges for a non-snap but she had done it well.

Callum also said his chocolate was badly tempered but again his was good.

The top two were Chris and Callum and it was no surprise that Dani was eliminated.

Tomorrow night Curtis Stone guest stars.

1. I am really tired of this “mess of various stuff on a plate” type of desserts they’re showing. Also, the chocolate mousse piped that way looks like a turd.

2. Julie’s always been messy, but I was utterly revolted by her this time around. Just, wtf? Apart from the mess she made with the white chocolate froth or whatever that was, did she scoop up some mousse off the damn floor and eat it?!

3. I loved every single of Justine’s comments, her reactions were hilarious and appeared to be genuine. Also, LOL at trying to get away with the over-whipped mousse.

5. Chris looks like he does not give a damn about anything, I love it.

6. Callum, go away.

7. Am I the only one grossed out by the sounds of chewing and lip smacking when the judges eat? They, especially George, make these sounds at every tasting, didn’t his mama tell him it’s rude to eat with his mouth open.

8. I don’t get the gold leaf vogue at all. It’s just there to up the price of the dish for snobs engaging in social masturbation so that they can feel good about themselves while watching their excrements glitter in the toilet.

9. Bye, Dani

Thanks for the recaps but I’ve given up on watching the actual show.

While the dessert looked yummy it was waaay too little on one plate for my liking, not to mention a pain in the rear to prepare! I liked Justine’s comment at the end of it “I will never do that ever again. Zeus, your mistresses and your wife – Get Out!” 😛

If anyone’s still doing the “I’ve never…” list Julie said she’s never used that foam gun thingy before.

Agree with gia that the gold leaf is just silly – does it actually add flavour? If not then WHY IS IT THERE? Also agree with Chris not giving a damn. I certainly like him better this time around than in S1.

Lastly do you reckon they painted the vespa outside to be blue or just bought a blue one? ^_^

What a mess Julie left on the floor! No attempt to clean it up so that noone would slip on it!

Joseph, I was wondering about the blue scooter as well – they even changed the colour of the ‘flames’ from orange to blue!

I will only be flicking over now from Big Brother to see who’s gone …

LMAO, just when I stop watching All Stars, Dani gets eliminated. Typical.

6 Dunbi { 08.14.12 at 8:51 am }

Yes, I did notice Julie scoop something up from the floor and eat it. She did look very guilty when she looked up and saw the camera!

How good Chris is – I thought for sure this would be the end of him but he did a great job. I would like to see him win this but don’t think that will happen.

I too loved Justine’s try at getting away with the mousse. I so hoped the judges wouldn’t notice.

I was flicking over from BB to check in and it did look that Dani was gone a long way from home. She can go back to her amazing culinary life, to borrow George’s phrase.

I saw Julie Goodwin spill stuff on the floor and am bitterly disappointed if I missed her eating stuff off the floor , if the suggestion above is accurate.

Yes, the blue scooter and blue logo. So much talent at $hine.

Thanks Dunbi for confirming the Goodwinian grazing off the floor. She’s just about to unload a bacon wrapped meatloaf on the Today show, hope she doesn’t drop it.

I hear Zeus does a cracker of a sex tape – http://whydoesitexist.files.wordpress.com/2012/05/vlcsnap-2012-05-27-19h44m20s1.png

“The myth of Hercules just like you learned in school.

You know, the one where Hulk Hogan was Zeus, Socrates was an aging neurotic Jew who lived in Heaven, Satan was actually the WWF’s The Big Show and, to prove his might, Young Hercules had to win a track meet in Burbank, California. “

I think Julie scooped it out of the mixmaster which was on the floor. One thing I have noticed with these all stars is that they taste test with their fingers.

10 JK { 08.14.12 at 9:41 am }

I laugh at Julie every time she says “oh shit”.

11 Joseph Skyrim { 08.14.12 at 12:01 pm }

According to the tv ad that ran during Everybody Dance Now, it’s either Julie, Kate or Callum going tonight.

Blue flames make it special, because the all-stars are cooking with gas now! ;p

RR- I agree, I have just watched it twice and Julie definitely ate from the mixing bowl, not off the floor. Yes she is messy, and probably more a good home cook than a chef/all-star, but some people are seriously harsh on her, considering all the love damn Dani seems to get!!!!!!

13 kugelhopf { 08.14.12 at 12:53 pm }

It appears like Dani was advised to go on alls stars to change her reputation. So much about what a wonderful person she is (she may be) and what a wonderful cook she is (she may not be).

Did anyone notice the food in Julie’s hair when the judges were tasting her food?

OMG, another one of these 13 recipes, 100 ingredients dessert that cost an arm and a leg to make. and let’s not forget the Thermomix at $2000, the Foam gun and blast chiller.
What happened to making desserts with ingredients you can get from Coles, since it’s their sponsors. I remenber when Zumbo did his vanlla cake, we got endless phone calls and emails from people looking for Titanium Dioxide (is that right?).

Let them eat Yellow Cake

16 Dunbi { 08.14.12 at 2:22 pm }

They have put this recipe up on site and among other things there are six different types of chocolate, clay powder, trimoline, stabiliser, gold leaf, freeze dried raspberries and of course don’t forget the tiny viola flowers!

17 Culinary Boner { 08.14.12 at 3:47 pm }

“clay powder” hahahaha

To quote Homer (not the Greek):
“Kaolin… mmmmm *drools*”

18 littlepetal { 08.14.12 at 4:08 pm }

Manage to watch last night (no Olympics) and I found Julie is such a messy cook. Also noticed most of the contestants have not improve their cooking skills after MC.

I am impressed with Callum. He was pushed to the Finale by the judges but at least he has improves in his cooking skills.

We now know in the cooking demo by Julie must be filmed not while she is cooking but they have to clean up and film again and cut and paste to make her look good.

People grumbling about the ingredients and techniques: this is MasterChef, not HomeCook. If you want things you can cook in your kitchen, watch Better Homes and Gardens. They also have tips on how to turn old toilet rolls into nifty pieces of furniture…

20 gwen { 08.14.12 at 5:59 pm }

well Chunks, if the ingrdiens comes from the Coles Pantry, then we should be able to find them there. You can make rstaurants quality desserts with lots of different techniques without having to spend days on the internet trying to find them. Good luck finding Clay powder or trimoline in Perth. . but hey, you keep on watching Better homes and Gardens it seems like you are learning a lot from it.

The Society Against the Consumption of Unaustralian Hardware Products has today blockaded Masterchef headquarters to protest against the show’s recent use of modelling clay as a food ingredient and plywood as a cooking fuel. Setting fire to a life size effigy of Baz from The Renovators, Society spokesperson Dick Smith demanded that all future challenges on the show use Ozemite as both an ingredient AND a sustainable fuel source. George and Gary were sighted in apparent readiness to meet with the protesters. However, sources confirmed they changed their mind upon learning that PETA was not protesting as they had originally thought.

22 gia { 08.14.12 at 8:25 pm }

@Chunks: Gold is not a food ingredient.

23 Culinary Boner { 08.14.12 at 9:09 pm }

only marginally related…
interesting article on crashing food mag market –
http://www.dailylife.com.au/dl-food/blogs/short-order/how-to-create-the-perfect-food-magazine-20120813-244i8.html

“Why fewer people are buying food magazines is an issue exercising the minds of publishers around the country right now. Audit Bureau of Circulations figures released late last week show that food magazine sales have slumped — for some, disastrously. MasterChef magazine’s circulation has collapsed, down 36.7% (the periods compared are January to June 2011 and January to June 2012). Woolworths Good Taste is down 17.7%, Super Food Ideas (our biggest-selling food title) is down 12.6% and Delicious down 10.6%. Australian Gourmet Traveller felt the smallest blow, losing 2%.

Of course, food magazines are not the only ones to have lost sales over the past year (Cleo and Cosmopolitan’s numbers aren’t so hot either) and much of MasterChef magazine’s drop surely must be attributed to the drop in its on-air ratings. Nevertheless, they’re figures that would keep any self-respecting editor awake at night.”

After the debacle of MCA All Stars, do they truly ruly have a decent show to give us?

24 Reality Raver { 08.14.12 at 9:33 pm }

CB – I think the drop in food magazines must also be coinciding with people just getting their recipes from the internet. BTW your blockade comment had me in stiches.

25 Dunbi { 08.15.12 at 11:55 am }

Interesting article CB. I have dozens of cookbooks and used to buy lots of food magazines but what do I do when I fancy making something? – click on the internet. Fabulous sites, photos, and ‘how to’ videos all for free and there has only been one recipe I’ve not been able to find.
