Masterchef All Stars – And The Finalist Are…

The majority of the challenges in Masterchef All Stars have been fantastic and this episode was no exception. Justine, Callum and Chris had a three round cook off with each round the main ingredient being their favourite with a points awarded at the end of each round. Hopefully we will see something similar next series.

It was no surprise that Chris chose beer, but apparently “dessert queen” Callum choosing mushrooms was. Justine was quite canny in choosing chestnuts even though in the end it did not give her any advantage.

I must say I am suffering a bit of Masterchef fatigue, and one of the issues is the judges. Even though we were wondering where Matt Preston was last week, when he returned it was great to see him and his particular type of judging style.

Maybe next year on Masterchef Series Five they rotate through the judges. Keep the three as staples but maybe just not on each episode every night. When Gary had two weeks off when he hurt his knee it was great to see him come back and in fact it helped the viewer realise what he brought to the show.

The same with George and his kind of zany intensity let us miss him a bit so we can enjoy it when he is on our screens. This would also allow for fresh faces and new personalities to be introduced.

The first round was Callum’s ingredients mushrooms. Callum won the three points, Justine scored the two points for her seafood and mushrooms and Chris came last in that round with his Calf Liver and Sweetbreads dish.

The second round was Chris’s ingredient beer. Callum decided to to Beer Pannacotta with a chocolate mousse, whereas Chris did a seafood tasting plate with fish, and stout battered mussels.

Justine made beef fillet, pomme parisian with a stout jus. She burnt the potatoes which meant she came last in that round. However Chris’s beer gastronomy title has now been taken by Callum who won the round and a place into the final. In fact he got the bench tap by Matt Preston, something which has not occurred since 2010. This says a lot about the last two seasons, however I would be curious to know which dish in 2010 received this accolade.

Gary also thought it was the best dessert he had eaten all year in either the Masterchef kitchen or at a restaurant.

Chris and Justine had to cook with chestnuts they both decided to cook quail. Chris was making a stuffed quail similar to his audition dish and Justine’s was pan fried with lentils. They both looked great but in the end Chris pipped her at the post to grab the last spot.

There is now one person from each season battling it out for the All Stars title, Gary took the time to say it was not rigged but it was the best cooks through.

Who do you want to win Masterchef All Stars? Will Chris find redemption in the taking out the title? Will Callum fulfill the promise he showed in season two or will Kate show the skeptics that she actually is an all round cook?

No prob. I appreciate good spelling too and can handle being corrected. I’m also happy to see that mobile phone text speak doesn’t show up anywhere here. I find it hard to make much sense of, but that’s probably more telling about me than anything else. Also, one spelling error that always gets me is the inappropriate apostrophe.

Whoops, that’s waaaay off the thread topic.

Sorry. Back to bagging out – ahem – commentary on Masterchef….

Man, I just reread that. I sound like such a dork.

Oh well…

3 Gus { 08.19.12 at 7:06 pm }

The most contrived, overrated, sleep-inducing cooking show ever to have graced the Australian airwaves.

4 Morgan { 08.19.12 at 7:28 pm }

And the finale dish is… The Snow Egg. Ugh, this obviously is being set up for Callum to win!

5 Morgan { 08.19.12 at 8:03 pm }

Ugh, Chris was robbed!

6 Georgie { 08.19.12 at 8:14 pm }

And the winner is – nudge, nudge, wink, wink, say no more.

how can it be a even playing field when one finalist has made this dessert before ,why not have them go off and make something different and then we will see who is the best . also why carry over points from one challenge to the next it’s all catch up , fancy giving chris a 5 minute crash course for the snow egg ,what’s the point waste of time .the best judging we ever have had was this year when 3 judges went round and tasted all the meals ,no bloody bias . you know what i hate masterchef now!!!!!!!!

Poor Aaron would have had to go through a drive through on the way home because of all the raw food he was served.

At least he got some screen time, RR! How much weight has Baggie lost? It’s always great when she is in, she brings a bit of reverential humility to it all. And Peter Gilmore. Two accomplished and honourable professionals who aren’t out to sell a book or an image. Pity Peter g didn’t bring a new desert. They would be great to host into the future.

10 Kate { 08.19.12 at 8:43 pm }

Maggie!! Not Baggie!

11 Georgie { 08.19.12 at 8:55 pm }

Peter Gilmore sure hasn’t lost any, in fact I think he’s found some. His chin needs it’s own luggage trolley.

12 Moonstruck { 08.19.12 at 9:00 pm }

I wonder if Maggie’s weight loss has anything to with her hand?
I know she burnt it when she picked up a scan pan that had been in the oven but that does not explain the arm being in a sling.

13 Moonstruck { 08.19.12 at 9:05 pm }

Btw they used Maggie’s stock and two contestants mentioned they had verjuice in their dishes.
So they tried to get on her good side. It should have been blind tasting

14 Morgan { 08.19.12 at 9:08 pm }

The judges really need to taste and judge without their preferences and bias towards certain things they like.

15 Pollywaffle { 08.19.12 at 9:26 pm }

They really had to twist Maggie’s arm to come on the show to root for Callum

As usual MasterCrap has ripped off their viewers. George, Gary and Matt should hang their fatso heads in shame. What a blatant set up with the final challenge being a dish that one of the contestants had attempted on MasterCrap before. As for Chris, he has been ripped off twice. First, by Donna ‘Fuckface’ Hay when she screwed him in her dodgy judging so Julie ‘Sweat Cry’ Goodwin could win to sell more mediocre cookbooks. Now, he gets screwed again. Me thinks that Chris is really a threat to Gary and George. He hasnt had any professional training and could out-chef them.

What the fuck would you know, Lulu? How about you shut your mouth.

18 Linda { 09.07.12 at 10:29 pm }

Long time reader, first time poster. I would love to have an ignore function implemented on here because I’m sure I am not the only one sick of reading all of the garbage Lulu spouts out. Seriously, a person just can’t be nice for someone to like them these days? Dear lord. You really must be one bitter, lonely person.

Welcome Linda, the more the merrier, looking forward to reading your comments, RR tells us just ignore the ones you don’t like.

20 Georgie { 09.08.12 at 8:25 am }

I’m using the ‘ignore function’ on Betty.

Watching MC ‘All Stars’ in the UK at the moment. Have been reading your summary in my lunch hour. Throughly enjoying everyones comments (though getting some odd looks from people as I giggle to myself).
