Real Housewives Of Australia Going Ahead And Now Casting

In news for Real Housewives fans, a Real Housewives of Australia will be screened on Foxtel next year.

It was announced today that Arena will screen 10 x one hour docu-drama which will provide an insider view of the lifestyles of the wealthy and pampered women found in the chicest parts of cities all over the world.

The show will showcase the extravagant lives of five of Australia’s most privileged, powerful and glamorous women. The series will introduce us to an elite group of women and reveal intimate and often outrageous details about their relationships, career triumphs, pitfalls and family drama.

Foxtel Executive Director of Television Brian Walsh said  “The Real Housewives of Australia will tap into the qualities and idiosyncrasies that are uniquely Australian whilst embracing all the drama, antics and extravagance we have come to love when observing these pampered wives of the uber riche.

The show will be produced by Matchbox Pictures and they will casting over the coming weeks.

This is great news for reality TV in Australia, however hopefully they will cast from one city or town only and there will be links between some if not all of the cast. This has worked so well for the overseas shows. If they are going to cast people from different cities it will be hard to get plot lines going, this could be seen in the entertaining but not so successful WAG’s series  screened earlier this year where people were cast from different cities and different sporting codes and it was difficult getting story lines or connections going.

The Gold Coast Housewives would be fun, but who knows where it will pop up. As I have said in previous blog posts going years back I still think Skye Leckie would be fantastic on a show like this.

Suggestions included:

The Sydney cast could include Skye Leckie wife of David Leckie as Australia’s version of Ramona. Gail Elliott, could take on the Kelly Bensimon role, Charlotte Dawson would be perfect in the Bethenny role, and Kirsten Carrioll would be the equivalent of the countess as she is married to a French man, as well as using it as platform to promote her lanolips range. For the Jill Zarin role I would suggest Ben Tilley’s wife Tiffany which would also create some tension with Skye Leckie just like the Real Housewives of NYC show.

However will add a few more names in as suggestions Shari-Lea Hitchcock, Liz Buttrose and their friend Darrel Lea heir, Carissa Lea. They are all friends in real life so there would not have to be as many set up scenarios and their conversation could flow naturally.

Roxy Jacenko who has been in a reality TV pilot before would be a great edition to the cast as would her sister Ruby. Lara Bingle is not doing much she could be a worthwhile addition to the show.

I am sure there would be quite a few who would put their hands up to be on the show, remember Bethenny Frankel is now worth $55 million.

Real Housewives Of Australia coming to Arena in 2013. Who would you like to see cast?

I really don’t understand why they would green light this? Why would anyone want to watch these wannabe/try hard Australian house wives try to be like NYC & OC Housewives? it won’t work. Come on Foxtel do something original!

Agree Chasing Vegas. These trash-reality formats tend not to work with Australian casts so much. I mean look at Brynne’s show – she was filming for 12 months and they’ve had like 6 episodes, tonight being the finale? And as sweet as Brynne is her show is pathetic. It just doesn’t work here. Even on Foxtel.

Stacey,
I reckon you are on the money with the lack of schizzle in most Australian ‘non-scripted’, follow-the-people-about reality shows. Though Sylvania Waters was a clear exception.

My view is that SW was filmed through the right frame – targeting boorish, yobbo steoreotypes primarily to reinforce the prejudices of a target market in England and non-CashedUpBogan Australia.

The Real Housewives of Australia wont work if they try to show us legitimate or normal people. We need extremes we can feel superior to. Whether they be rich, fatuous and tasteless Double Bay cougars sitting around comparing the respective performance of their latest vibrators, or a set of less affluent housewives (who’d be knocked back for a cameo on Housos because they were just too authentic) talking about when their kids are out on parole.

Instead we’ll probably get something that’s worthy but yawnfully boring.

CB – I have heard great things about Sylvania Waters and have seen a few specials about it but unfortunately i was 2 when it came out and my family didn’t watch.

It would be interesting to do a show about each of the demographics you described. The juxtaposition of each would make for great TV. Its just that as Australians we don’t really care about the rich folk like the US does. If they had done ‘Housos’ as a docu\reality show it might’ve worked!

Agree. I don’t think it will work here. Generally people reject extravagant shows of wealth and waste.

Well if you had half a life you would see Aussie ladies are just as interesting and different than your fanny Neighbour grow bigger than a sausage on the BBQ type people YEH for house wife’s

It will work for those who aren’t self involved idiots with Tall Poppy Syndrome. It’s entertainment pure and simple. Watch it, like ot or shut up and please move to the farthest reaches of Eastern Europe. Australia is a country with fake chested, plastic, botoxed wealthy women, and that’s not something I would complain about. Show it off in all its ridiculous glory!

Here we go. Bring it on !!!!

I have never seen this and won’t be watching as I watch enough telly without getting Foxtel, but methinks that any really interesting, educated, uppercrust ladies, like the now deceased Elizabeth Murdoch, wouldn’t have a bar of this.
Money doesn’t maketh the man, or woman. So if it’s just cashed up, moronic, bogans, like the The Sillvania Waters mob, the Dashians, Brynne or ‘who’s that blonde model?, I wouldn’t like it
