Aussie Pickers Coming To A&E Channel On Foxtel

Foxtel told me a couple of months ago that they were commissioning a local version of a show that is screened on A&E. I thought it might be Storage Wars, however it has been announced it is Aussie Pickers, based on the format of you guessed it American Pickers.

The premise of the show is two “pickers” hit the back roads and barnyards of Australia, earning a living by restoring forgotten relics to their former glory, transforming one person’s trash into another’s treasure.

A&E  are commissioning a 10 part series with Shine Australia producing it.

The series will follow the Australian pickers as they scour the country for hidden gems in junkyards, basements, garages and sheds, meeting quirky characters and hearing their amazing stories.

The hosts of Aussie Pickers will be announced in the coming weeks.

Aussie Pickers will be on A&E in 2013.

I’ve seen the US version a couple of times after hitting on it while channel surfing.

It’s watchable, if not riveting, because the two guys who do the ‘picking’ of collectables go to various arse-end parts of the US to get their stuff. It’s the novelty of seeing the off the beaten track of Americana that make this ok. Plus one of the collectors is into old industrial artefacts (which is an area of personal interest for me). The retro-fashion, tattooed receptionist who gives the guys their leads is also good TV talent.

Based on all this, I’d doubt I’d ever watch an Aussie version because it won’t have the same novelty appeal in terms of armchair tourism. So I’m guessing this is being filmed for the US and UK markets?

Shine will no doubt fuck this show up by finesse-ing it with their usual sledgehammer approach.
