Samantha Jade’s Backstory Appear To Have Some Spin In It

Pop singer Samantha Jade is looking very strong going into tonight’s final as she is certainly peaking at the right time to take out the competition.

There is not doubt the girl can sing. However she did court some controversy early on in the series when critics were saying it would give her an advantage to be mentored by her friend Guy Sebastian.  She did deserve her place in the competition shown by the fact she made the top three.

However what is interesting in these reality shows are the back stories and they can help you attract fans and the all important vote.

Other finalist Jason’s back story coming from small town Albert has certainly resonated with fans and he never landed in the bottom two despite some dodgy performances.

Samantha’s back story was just as compelling she had been signed by a US record label however success alluded her and she ended up being dropped and had come back to Australia to try her luck here.

However there appeared to be some twisting of the story to make us more sympathetic too the 25 year old singer.

Read the following two sentences and see if your perspective changes:

1. “My dad got me a job in his mining factory where he works, and I was out the back counting stock” (from her X Factor audition)

2…she moved back to Perth and began working for her father’s mining company (in Woman’s Day)

Now the first sentence was not a lie but it certainly a bit of spin to it ensured a more sympathetic view of the singer. As was the fact that she was dropped by her US record label, this occurred in 2008 and she had released a single in Australia since then.

It won’t be the first or last time a back story will be manipulated. Singing cowboy Justin this year managed to get nationwide sympathy for not seeing his children for so many years, with the full story on that never emerging on why this occurred.

There is no doubt looking at Samantha Jade’s wiki page that she has been very close to getting her big break but it just never happened which must have been frustrating for her. This is why she is on the show to find a fan base which she has certainly achieved.

The same Women’s Day article also has quote by outlines how she has left her LA based boyfriend Swedish record producer Christian Nilssom in the US. If she wins tomorrow night he may have to get used to her being based in Australia for some time to come.

Can you think of any other reality TV back stories that have had some media spin put on them to make them more compelling?

Jason’s back story appears to have been “massaged” as well. He apparently does not live in small town Albert but in Narromine which is still small with 2600 people. When he was younger him and his family lived in Albert. (Thanks Joan and @varicool.

I follow Christian on twitter he is planning on moving, I find Jason’s media spin more amusing he does not live in Albert, he lives in Narromine town of 2600, he was born in Albert, but his family have lived in Narromine for a few years, his family own a pub, motor inn and a petrol supply station and several properties what a con, he was on Sunrise this morning saying only 9 live in Albert now but 40 turned up to greet him lol Locals from Narromine were very upset as he just drove past where he lives to keep this Albert story going.

joan – that is interesting indeed.

“My dad got me a job in his mining factory where he works, and I was out the back counting stock”

Counting stock? What, diamonds or lumps of coal?

The reason her career has never taken off is, she just isn’t great. There are thousands of people who are good singers but don’t have a singing career, because they’re not great singers.

Home visits will be interesting, whose house are they going to use? probably one of the several they own in the town and rent out lol

That’s really interesting, Joan. I love finding out the real truths behind the stories. I’ll give it to them, coming from a tiny town does make a good story, but the truth pretty much always comes out. You wonder if the contestants like living a lie so to speak.

I am sure there are lots of singers like Samantha that have had some success but struggle to really make it big time. I like her voice though and find her to be more talented than a lot of so called singers in the charts at the moment. Just goes to show that a lot of things need to go your way to find mainstream success.

Maybe none of their back stories should be made public at all and we should just judge them on their singing abilities alone.
They do this on every reality show so that we feel sorry for them and it does become really annoying. What if it was someone who had no problems, just an average, happy home life but was a great singer and yet was overlooked by the voting public because their back story was just boring or non existant?

If only, A.P, if only!

11 American Idol Contestant Admits To Faking His Back Story | reality ravings { 02.03.13 at 1:33 pm }

[…] Back stories are manipulated as we saw in The X Factor Australia last year. Two of the finalists had their stories massaged. The winner Samantha Jade had auditioned saying she had once had a music contract but now was working in a factory, it was in fact a factory her father owned. Also Jason Owens was spruiked as a guy who came from a town of fourteen but in fact he actually lived in Gilgandra! See previous blog post on this here. […]
