American Idol – Why The Freak Out About The Ratings
In the US there has been a lot of hand wringing about the drop in ratings of American Idol. Yes the premier episode had dropped by 20 per cent of the previous year debut, however there was still 17.5 million people watching it.
To get it into perspective the show that won last night was The Taste (review coming soon) only drew 6 million viewers.
Should Idol be axed? Of course not as it is still one of the highest rating shows on TV. Sure it is not getting the stratospheric ratings it used to get a few years back over 25 million, but it is still pretty damn good compared. In fact it will be one of the biggest rating shows this year.
The theory is The Voice and The X Factor have diluted the ratings as it is not longer the only singing reality TV show on in the US.
In Australia Network TEN are screening the show. This week their preview was promoting judge Keith Urban. Their strategy is to get the fans that fell in love with him on The Voice to watch him on Idol. You get the feeling Keith will find his groove once the live shows start.
American Idol on TEN on Thursday and Friday nights at 7.30pm. It is airing hours after it has been shown in the USA.
