American Idol – Why The Freak Out About The Ratings

In the US there has been a lot of hand wringing about the drop in ratings of American Idol. Yes the premier episode had dropped by 20 per cent of the previous year debut, however there was still 17.5 million people watching it.

To get it into perspective the show that won last night was The Taste (review coming soon) only drew 6 million viewers.

Should Idol be axed? Of course not as it is still one of the highest rating shows on TV. Sure it is not getting the stratospheric ratings it used to get a few years back over 25 million, but it is still pretty damn good compared. In fact it will be one of the biggest rating shows this year.

The theory is The Voice and The X Factor have diluted the ratings as it is not longer the only singing reality TV show on in the US.

In Australia Network TEN are screening the show. This week their preview was promoting judge Keith Urban. Their strategy is to get the fans that fell in love with him on The Voice to watch him on Idol. You get the feeling Keith will find his groove once the live shows start.

American Idol on TEN on Thursday and Friday nights at 7.30pm. It is airing hours after it has been shown in the USA.

I am a huge Idol fan but already they are doing my nut in with overblown sob stories and all the weird gimmicky camera work and effects. It’s like the show producers are freaking out and trying to make it wacky in the hopes that will keep people’s interest.

If there is talent equivalent to Kelly Clarkson, I am sold!

I saw this encored late last Saturday night on One ,I think. Hilarious. You’d think with USA’s population , they’d kick some goals. Nope.

After all four judges had indicated to this totally tone deaf girl that she couldn’t sing for jack and should stick to dancing, the wannabe kept warbling and had to be removed by Security. Train wreck time again.

Not to be denied , the tone deaf loser then insanely concluded that “the judges must be tired” to reject her. I never tire of seeing these vocal vandals get their comeuppance.

Why do so many of them try to sound like Whitney Houston and wring the bejesus out of every word? It’s melodic madness.

Also the idiot that claimed “Superstar” as a Luther Vandross song.. His musical roots must be as deep as a teaspoon. Written by Leon Russell and immortalized forever by Karen Carpenter. Karen’s opening two notes on this tune would be the envy of every singer.

No desire to watch this show and from the little I’ve seen by accident I know I’m making the right call. 😛 At what point do reality shows get axed though? 17 million viewers is still heaps.

Ofcourse the over saturation of these types of shows is just leading to a downward spiral, and you can often find better singers forging on their own at Youtube. Peter Hollens is a good example. I like his music. :)
