My Kitchen Rules – The Scoring is Bollocks

Seriously there is some shonky scoring going on in My Kitchen Rules this season. Lisa and Stefano from South Australia gave the Western Australian hipsters a six for their dinner which was a bit of a disaster but only gave the Tassie father and son team a five? You get the feeling that they think the white collar professionals are more their milieu than some of the others around the table and this coloured the scores they gave them.

Also Pete and Manu are being over generous in their scoring giving eight and nine’s to dishes where the presentation was below par.

One person I am coming around to liking is Jake from Queensland you get the feeling he could go from villain to hero in one fell swoop by giving those spice girls a bit of a tickle up.  He said: “Jessie and Biswa don’t know a good food marriage…don’t think they have a lot of knowledge.”

He also came up with some classic zingers on the night where, lets face it, the dinner party was a bit of a disaster.

They included:

  • “There is a fine line between an appetizer and an entree” after being served one lamb cutlet for entree.
  • “If they stuffed up cous cous the fondant could be a bit of a challenge” talking about what he thought the dessert could be like; and
  • ” The dessert is as bland as their personalities!” Yup have to agree on that one as well.

Josh and Andi called their dinner party Black Champagne, which of course, Lisa thought was cool, but as the others pointed out the menu did not really match the theme.

They menu however was more Moroccan, with Dukkah Crusted Lamb Cutlets for entree, Moroccan Chicken with harissa and vegetable cous cous for main, and Chocolate Fondant with Coffee Anglaise for dessert.

Josh and Andi are typical too cool for school types. Their dream is to open a bar serving tapas style dishes (of course), and they were prepared to drive an hour to buy what they think are the best lamb cutlets in Perth. Seriously there was no decent butcher closer? Dumb strategy as it bit into their prep time. Not that there was a lot of prep for their meals as compared to some dinner parties.

Andi like to think of herself as more arty, whereas she described Josh and methodical. She had tasked him to remember the recipes. Seriously why not have a copy stashed in your pocket and take a quick sneak peek when you go to the loo!

First course disaster was not making enough dukkah so only being able to serve up one lamb cutlet to each person. Considering the wait between courses on this show it is a wonder none of the teams went postal when they saw the small size. There was not even any green leaves to nibble on.

What was on the plate tasted good, but presentation was very ordinary. For someone allegedly so arty the presentation was one of the weakest seen so far.

Manu would have liked another cutlet, and the spice girls whinged there was not enough salt. Everyone else liked it, well we won’t know what Kerrie thinks, as she was bossy in the kitchen when she was cooking but now they are commentating on other peoples food it appears to be Craig doing all the talking.

The main dish was a disaster, too much turmeric on the chicken was the least of their problems, they could not get the cous cous right. It appears Andi never fully recovered from the fact that the couscous she normally uses was not in stock. She then could not work out the measurements, were there no instructions on the packet to follow?

Anyway she had to ditch four packets of couscous as she refused to serve it as it was too gluggy. At this stage the diners must have been wondering if they had been covertly placed on the Dukan Diet, that is, no carbs.

Basically the dish was a dud.

Jessie exclaimed she could smell the capsicum freaking out like there was agent orange leeching through the dining area.

The drama was not over for the WA pair, as they could not find the icing sugar.  By the way did anyone spot the Campbell Stock tetra packs in the pantry again as they searched for it?

The stress was getting to Josh and he forgot the recipe for the fondant. Fans of Masterchef will know fondant is a death dish however they managed to salvage it. The presentation was appalling.  One sad looking fondant with a shot glass of anglaise. As usual Manu had a comment about the sauce.

Pete got an overcooked Fondant but the other diners gushed over theirs, well except for Jake and Elle. Surprisingly even the chocolate hating Biswa thought it was “magnificent”.

Mick from Tasmania said he was still hungry, maybe the WA pair were practising tapas style portions on their guests.

Vic gave a high score of  7, NSW gave a 6, as did SA, QLD  and Tassie scored them a 5.  It was a combined score of 29 out of 50.

The judges scores were very high for food that was not great in either portion or presentation:

Manu – 8 for entree, 3 for main, and 8 for dessert

Pete – 9 for entree, 4 for main, and 7 for dessert.

Seriously Pete you got an overdone Fondant and you gave a seven? That is an above average score. I think that was over generous as was the nine for the entree which had pomegranate seeds scattered over the plate and only one cutlet. Where does this give them room to move on other dishes that will be better in presentation and flavour.

In the end they received total score of 68. Which does place them at the bottom of the ladder, but it was a higher score then they deserved but it still leaves them in with a shot of some other team bombing out before the end of the restaurant round to keep them in the show.

My Kitchen Rules on SEVEN Monday – Wednesday at 7.30pm.

Have to go to work now. Be back this arvo (your tonight) to see to what depths this conversation about baby fetishes, boob and Mama fetishes has deteriorated.

S Did anone see on QI that the Scots invented tikka masala. Apparently they said something like, “This chicken tikka is nice but needs gravy”, and it took off from there. Occchhh!!!

Cowboys and indians anyone?

Lesley – I had spotted the rice bubbles and thought maybe it was their dirty little secret. But you are probably right it may bot have been their home.

5 Anna { 02.01.13 at 1:20 pm }

They should have made chocolate crackles for dessert :-)

Wonder if mumas boy will make a perfect or gluggy risotto. The dish that has ruined MC contestants. It’s all in the rice….

Just read in New Idea/ No idea, some of you call it, about MKR behind the scenes stuff.
Matt moved in with his dad Mick (Tassie Boys ) when he was 16 as the parents had separated and they are very close as is obvious. Matt is a classically trained singer who has a crush on Racheal Leahcar from “The Voice”.
Sue@106, I think Eddie needs help.

Thanks AP. And agreed about Eddie….

9 Daisy { 02.01.13 at 6:35 pm }

I agree with the agreement.
Just got home from my 1st day. No kids yet. This isn’t my usual work day. Still doing the shop.
Next trip Borneo or Sulawesi. To practice Indo.

Hey Daisy how did your first day go? I had a shite day at work! Chemist scripting is harder than it looks! Grumble.

Thank god for RR I seemed to have missed the entire convo! Hey thanks for the info about the article AP I think I have an OK! from a few weeks ago which some info about the contestants, pretty standard though so will have to check.

After reading some of the comments as an afterthought, when Andi was shopping and kept putting things in ‘just in case’, why didn’t she put in some ‘just in case’ icing sugar? She bought more of everything else but not enough of that or the cous cous? Makes me wonder whether the producers hide their shit just for some extra dramz.

11 Anna { 02.01.13 at 7:53 pm }

Ch7 are doing MKR encore tonight…

12 Littlepetal { 02.01.13 at 8:02 pm }

Stacey- Andi did buy more cous cous.4 packets for 12 persons? I wonder why didn’t Josh try to borrow some sugar from the neighbours. I guessed it is not their home and they don’t know the neighbours.

13 Daisy { 02.01.13 at 8:16 pm }

Great thanks, Stacey. I’m in the art room on Mondays so I’m like pig in mud. I used to teach art for a few years. Being in there will make it easy to do Indo art and cooking. Plus they have a kiln, which means I can do pottery too. Today was just prep but the staff were so friendly and quite a few jovial ones. By coincidence, I was in HS and teacher’s college with the deputy head. We know all the same people from back then. So far am landing very well on my feet.

14 Littlepetal { 02.01.13 at 9:31 pm }

Watching Episode 1 again and you can see who made it to Round 2.

15 Izobel2 { 02.01.13 at 10:23 pm }

Oh no littlepetal that takes the surprise away… Did u see it on the future promo?

16 Littlepetal { 02.01.13 at 10:31 pm }

Izobel2 – Don’t worry. You need to concentrate to notice who goes through the 2nd round. I don’t think it is in future promo.

17 Izobel2 { 02.01.13 at 10:54 pm }

I was just worried for your sake!
I know the eagle eyed viewers would notice Masterchef contestants last year during the upcoming ads!

18 Anna { 02.02.13 at 11:50 am }

Saw the promo for Monday night…

1. Looks like Space Cadets have packets of pre made food in the overflowing bin

2. Who the hell puts anything in the cold oil & expects it to work?

3. The ‘it looks like poo’ comment from them must be coming up for one of the 2 last couples as I’ve not seen it before

We are only 3 episodes in & I already want to give them a piece of mind…. Unusual for me as it usually takes ages for me to go ‘SMACK’

19 Daisy { 02.02.13 at 11:58 am }

Anna, Last week the girl from Bengal said the Tassie guys double-scoop mash tower looked like “poop”.

You might have missed it because of the way they always whisper and snigger to each other.

20 Anna { 02.02.13 at 1:59 pm }

Daisy, thank you! Goes to show that I’m tuning out during their impeccable table manners …

21 Daisy { 02.02.13 at 2:13 pm }

Anna : Good one!!!

As Bolders put it; SNAP.

22 Anna { 02.02.13 at 4:04 pm }

Saw this photo on line and wondering if it’s not a ‘hint’ as to who is going through to the final round

http://au.tv.yahoo.com/plus7/my-kitchen-rules/

With VIC, SA and WA being from round 2 of the comp

23 Daisy { 02.02.13 at 4:07 pm }

Anna, I’m not looking.

24 Anna { 02.02.13 at 4:30 pm }

Daisy, it’s provided by the MKR producers/team, and it’s on CH 7 website.

I just want to know which team Chef Collin tells off :-)

MKR encore Friday night, repeat encore Sat afternoon… I’d rather watch Grey’s Anatomy then MKR 3 times in one week….

25 Daisy { 02.02.13 at 4:51 pm }

Once round is enough for me.
As for tennis and cricket, I think I’d rather have a night out with The Spaced girls and Pas de Deux than watch TV sport. How much do I dislike TV sport.

Not so much Romeo though. Scared where his eyes might go. i’d have to keep my chicken breasts out of sight and out of reach.

26 Anna { 02.02.13 at 5:13 pm }

Usually men go for the chicken leg and breast… guess Romeo is not a leg man lol

Not going to watch Jowlsy again… watching him eat is painful one time, a few times is few times too many… must admit, his table manners are a bit better this season.

Still his attitude towards contestants leaves a lot to be desired… he is so damn condescending…

27 Daisy { 02.02.13 at 6:00 pm }

Imagine trying to prepare a menu with your boss yelling at constantly. The stress WOULD make you stuff up.
Also when you try and rush. What do they say more speed less haste or somehing like that. Whn you’re cooking the faster you try to go, the slower you go because you have more spills etc.

28 Anna { 02.02.13 at 6:13 pm }

Daisy, Chefs work under horrible pressure all day every day… Creative editing is only showing us the bits where Marco is constantly telling them to hurry up…

Customers don’t like waiting, so everything has to come out perfect and on time… was at the high end restaurant last year.. for pre theater dinner.

Waited 30 minutes for the entree and further 30 for main… main arrived around the time I usually pay the bill…. not sure what the hell went wrong in the kitchen, floor staff tried rushing them, BUT still they messed up… first time ever they’ve stuffed up.

I know that when my order was taken it was market to put a rush on it since I had to go to a show … and it was for an early sitting…

29 Sam { 04.08.13 at 5:49 pm }

Much like actual goths always deny being goths; hipsters never describe themselves as hipsters; only wannabe teens do. That Josh and Andi are describing themselves that way at their age is pretty sad.
