Survivor Caramoan – Brandon Hantz Unleashes

Long time fans of Survivor will have seen some dramatic tribal councils, but tonight’s one was probably the most dramatic one ever.

It will go down in Survivor history as the Brandon Hantz mega meltdown, but it also leads to questions about whether Brandon was mentally stable enough to go on the show a second time. In fact was he stable enough in his first season?

Brandon appears to swing between contrite to absolutely uncontrolled anger with a lot of paranoia and self righteousness thrown in. He started the episode telling the tribe to vote him out as he wanted to go home. Then the next morning he was all for staying, he also confessed he had been planning to pee in the rice and burn the camp down.

It was obvious that his tribe mates were disturbed by his behaviour and we got to see lots of close ups of Brandon with a knife in his hands hinting at how unhinged he was. One of the things setting him off was Special Agent Phillip who has a few issues of his own including narcissism.  Phillip wanted him out after Brandon insulted him. Brandon was not happy that Phillip did not accept his apology.

Andrea being either naive, stupid or manipulative told Brandon he had a target on his back. Brandon immediately went and asked Phillip about it saying “Andrea said….”. He then said he would give the tribe a reason to vote him off and he tipped out the beans and rice. It must have been quite a scary situation for his tribemates to watch, but also they had previously been talking about how unstable he was.

At the immunity challenge the favourites said they wanted to go to tribal council and were forfeiting the challenge. The fans were gobsmacked.

Then and impromptu tribal council occurred then and there as it became clear Brandon was continuing to be unhinged, and props to Jeff Probst for handling everything deftly and sensitively whilst keeping the drama and entertainment factor of the scenario intact.

Jeff Probst subtly removed him from the tribe to get him to stand next to him as he massaged his shoulders as they talked about what was occurring. Brandon tried to present it to the fans that he was doing all this to help them.

Fans got to hear the going ons of the favourites tribe, with Brandon saying Phillip was the leader and how he had bestowed stupid nicknames on the other tribemates. Phillip was not happy that  Brandon was tearing strips off him but also realised he needed to get his own side of the story to the fans tribe as well otherwise he would have a target on his back at the merge.

The vote occurred then and there, as he was in no shape to be sent back to the camp.

In the end Jeff got each tribe member to say who they would vote for and Brandon was gone.  What will be interesting to know was whether he stayed at Ponderosa or if he was shipped off elsewhere.

Survivor Caramoan on GO Channel Thursday nights at 7.30pm and repeated on GO at 4.30pm on a Saturday.

UPDATE: Reality Blurred has a very interesting take on the episode and is well worth a read.

Indeed RR, it would have been really quite frightening to be around that situation when Brandon lost it at camp – I agree with you on his mental instability and wonder whether he should have been allowed to play in the first place – I really do hope he can get it together…..

On the other hand though I really detest Phillip more now too – what an arrogant, conceited prick he is – I loved it when Brandon threw it at him about Boston Rob taking him to the finals – loved it – unfortunately though he will probably stick around for some time as they have lost their ‘crazy’ quota over the last 2 weeks…..pity!

Looking forward to next weeks merge….things definitely heating up!

Absolutely SD. In spite of his melt down, and delusion I would take 20 Brandon’s over 1 Phillip. I do think that even though he has a warped self-image he is still more self-aware than Phillip who is a major dickhead. That could be his Stealthareus name: Major Dickhead. How does he not realize that Boston Rob wasn’t his friend but dragged his ignorant butt to the final 3 just so that he would have some stooge next to him.
Imagine how frustrating it really would be for anyone stuck in a tribe with Phillip. Brandon’s temper would have been scary but he sure went out with a memorable bang.
I was nervous seeing those big machetes when he was losing it at camp though.

Brandon should not have been cast for either season. Casting players like Brandon and Shemar who spend their time announcing they want to go home does not make for good tv. Survivor are extremely lucky that Brandon’s breakout did not get physical and even luckier that he did not have a knife in his hand when he did.

Loved it.

I love every episode of Survivor, but that was just friggin awesome! Brandon what a legend, crazy but so entertaining. Pity they didn’t see that the real cause of the friction in the tribe was Phillip & his craziness & they had the opportunity to kick his ass off. That would have been brilliant, best blindside ever! Loved that he called out Phillip on all the ‘stealth r us’ crap & Boston Rob dragging his sorry ass thru the finals, knowing he was not gonna get votes, the guy is delusional.

Jeff handled the Brandon meltdown beautifully. I don’t think anyone in the tribe other than Phillip was threatened at all. I think they should have placed Brandon on the other tribe to cool off.

When will Sherri & Reynold realize that if they just formed an alliance they could quite easily go thru to the end together??
Both will fair very well in merge & I’m picking Sherri will go a long way into the game, if not to the finals.

Does anyone else think that Sherri looks hell of a lot like Sandra Bullock?

Chasingvegas: very much. I noticed it too.

also agree chasingvegas. some commentators in the US were calling her sandra bullock in the blind side with shamar as her african-american man taken under her wings

also apparently brandon hantz has been saying all over his recent interviews that he will come back to do survivor if Russell is in the same season
please survivor producers, don’t do this pleasseeeeeeeee

If Brandon comes back, I think we will see plastic knives.

Loved this episode, very exciting waiting to see what Brandon was going to do. I thought he would have been placed on the other team too.
I wonder if there was a doctor or psychologist in the background, or security in case Brandon got really violent?
He seemed very frustrated and couldn’t handle it at all so he was better off going home.
The other team dodged a bullet last night.

Couldn’t agree with you more chasingvegas on the Sherri/Reynold hook up – they are both pretty cluey!

Yes, she is very Sandra Bullocky!

AP There was no way they could have dumped him onto the other team. It wouldn’t have been fair to anyone. You’d end up with people trying to jump teams everytime they thought they were going to be voted off. And it would have terrified the fans.

Jeeesus! I have just finished watching this. Brandon is completely unhinged and has been his entire life I suspect. There is no way he should have been out there for the safety of everyone else if not for his own. Jeff Probst did an amazing job. Philip is clearly delusional, however he is not unstable, aggressive and violent.
The Block milked Mark’s illness, Survivor have milked the Hantz’s.

PollyB, it makes me wonder if it was sensible to show Brandon having that meltdown as he was clearly unwell.
Jeff did the right thing by getting Brandon to stand next to him so that he couldn’t start a physical fight and massaging his shoulders calming him down.
It will be good to look at the Ponderosa clips to see what happened to him after walking off.

13 Daisy { 03.16.13 at 11:39 am }

AP, they would have NEVER not filmed and aired it. The film people getting killed and naked princesses. The bigger the shock the more $$$.
I don’t know if Brandon would have gone to Ponderosa or straight into a padded room with some happy pills.
A BEX and a lie down at the very least,

I read one of Brandon’s interviews too where he said he would like to play again with his Uncle Russell, that would be a disaster. When he was questioned about Brandon coming back, Probst said he had been vetted by a psychologist and was cleared to play. Maybe they need a new psychologist.

I agree, Jeff handled the whole situation well, taking Brandon away from the tribe. The looks on the fans faces, particularly Reynold, was priceless.

I haven’t been able to find the Ponderosa clips. It would be interesting to see if Brandon went there, or if he was sent straight home.

15 Daisy { 03.16.13 at 10:44 pm }

It’s not surprising to see Reynold’s delight considering how grim his future in Survivor had been looking in recent weeks. The idol safe in his pocket, a Favourite meltdownand a immuntiy challenge forfeit.

There’s been a Twitter war going on between Russell & Phillip. Ha ha, can’t wait for the finale when these 2 get together again.

Phillip is such a w*nker.
