Survivor Caramoan – Brandon Hantz Unleashes
Long time fans of Survivor will have seen some dramatic tribal councils, but tonight’s one was probably the most dramatic one ever.
It will go down in Survivor history as the Brandon Hantz mega meltdown, but it also leads to questions about whether Brandon was mentally stable enough to go on the show a second time. In fact was he stable enough in his first season?
Brandon appears to swing between contrite to absolutely uncontrolled anger with a lot of paranoia and self righteousness thrown in. He started the episode telling the tribe to vote him out as he wanted to go home. Then the next morning he was all for staying, he also confessed he had been planning to pee in the rice and burn the camp down.
It was obvious that his tribe mates were disturbed by his behaviour and we got to see lots of close ups of Brandon with a knife in his hands hinting at how unhinged he was. One of the things setting him off was Special Agent Phillip who has a few issues of his own including narcissism. Phillip wanted him out after Brandon insulted him. Brandon was not happy that Phillip did not accept his apology.
Andrea being either naive, stupid or manipulative told Brandon he had a target on his back. Brandon immediately went and asked Phillip about it saying “Andrea said….”. He then said he would give the tribe a reason to vote him off and he tipped out the beans and rice. It must have been quite a scary situation for his tribemates to watch, but also they had previously been talking about how unstable he was.
At the immunity challenge the favourites said they wanted to go to tribal council and were forfeiting the challenge. The fans were gobsmacked.
Then and impromptu tribal council occurred then and there as it became clear Brandon was continuing to be unhinged, and props to Jeff Probst for handling everything deftly and sensitively whilst keeping the drama and entertainment factor of the scenario intact.
Jeff Probst subtly removed him from the tribe to get him to stand next to him as he massaged his shoulders as they talked about what was occurring. Brandon tried to present it to the fans that he was doing all this to help them.
Fans got to hear the going ons of the favourites tribe, with Brandon saying Phillip was the leader and how he had bestowed stupid nicknames on the other tribemates. Phillip was not happy that Brandon was tearing strips off him but also realised he needed to get his own side of the story to the fans tribe as well otherwise he would have a target on his back at the merge.
The vote occurred then and there, as he was in no shape to be sent back to the camp.
In the end Jeff got each tribe member to say who they would vote for and Brandon was gone. What will be interesting to know was whether he stayed at Ponderosa or if he was shipped off elsewhere.
Survivor Caramoan on GO Channel Thursday nights at 7.30pm and repeated on GO at 4.30pm on a Saturday.
UPDATE: Reality Blurred has a very interesting take on the episode and is well worth a read.
