The Voice Australia – Cool Cats and Chair Malfunctions Just Another Episode Of The Voice
Move over Seal there is another cool cat in town and it is 67 year old Steve Clisby. He has the swagger of a much younger man and if he has been taking his krill oil (non- sponsored mention) he may still have the potential to bust out a few James Brown moves.
Steve who has also been a support act for Seal in Amsterdam in 1992 sang I Can’t Get Enough Of Your Love showed he could be an interesting addition to the show, but it is hard to believe he will take it that seriously. Delta who did not turn around said she loved his voice and he retorted “so why didn’t you turn around?”. She then got caught out be intimating that Steve would be better placed with Seal and Seal showed that he actually has a sense of humour behind all that pop philosophy stuff and asked should he go with me because we are both black? And they did not let up, and the hole Delta dug just got deeper. In the end Steve did go with Seal instead of Joel which was probably the best decision.
It was a night of back stories dead dads, dropped boy bands and temporary displacement from the Queensland floods, but ironically the most drama came from the show itself when during Kathy Hinch’s number of Girl On Fire the chairs did not turn. It was no surprise they wanted her as she is one of the few female pop singers who have auditioned thus far.
So Joel and Ricky were banging on the red button and nothing happened and then they just cut the episode off and said To Be Continued pissing a number of viewers off. A risky move for NINE will it draw more people in tonight or will they not be happy being toyed with?
A good thing about The Voice is that it does give people who may ordinarily not make it past the first audition because they don’t fit the look. Belinda Adams is one such singer. She sings in the Police band she had a great voice it was no surprise all four judges turned.
Line of the night must go to Darren McMullen doing a voice over when talking about professional singer Danny. He said “Ricky may be able to woo Delta with his good looks but Danny might have to rely on his voice”. Really is Darren the last person to receive the memo that Ricky is gay?
Danny’s father died when he was eleven but he came to the audition with Brigette his sister who had a cracker coat and his mum. He sang When The Levee Breaks and this guy had a slow burn sex appeal when he sings. He could be the dark horse of the competition. He went with Joel and at this stage is the strongest one on his team.
A former boy band singer Rien (pronounced Ryan) from Mercury 4 auditioned and I thought his voice was fine but no one turned while he sang Never Say Never. Pity he was OK looking as well.
Twins Bec & Sebastian auditioned as a duo and as a bit of a gimmick. They were surprisingly picked by Ricky and thought Bec had the stronger voice of the two. Does this now mean they compete individually or as a duo?
Cute looking Jenna Dearness-Dark talked about being wiped out in the Queensland floods and are currently living in a granny flat. The pretty pink dress and cowboy boots threw me and I was not expecting the 16 year old to be an opera singer. She sang Pie Jesu and the judges turned and she correctly went with Delta who sold the spot on the basis of having toured with Andrea Bocelli.
Oscar Chavez sang Bed of Roses, his back story was about him and his wife being told they were infertile and then having a premature baby. I will be surprised if he makes it through the battle rounds.
Georgia Carey sang Kiss Me. She was a former swimmer who was close to getting to the Olympics however a ligament injury got in the way. Can she cut it as a singer? The answer was no as her voice was just not strong enough.
Sarah Martin was a 29 year old was there hoping to have her talent recognised. She sang Woman and she had a great voice however told Seal she did not have a plan B as she planned on never giving up on being a singer. He of course loved that and she picked to be on his team. Hopefully she will remove the metal before the battle rounds.
James Napier was another singer I hoped would get through He is a nurse and son of Marshall Napier and sister of Jessica from McLeod’s Daughters. For the record his father is in one of my favourite movies ever The Big Steal. He said he had been bullied at school because he was over weight and effeminate. He had a jazz style and sadly no one turned around.
Last up was Kathy Hinch a 25 year old is a gigging musician who said it has been quite hard getting through the door. For her it was also hard for the chairs to turn. Maybe because she had no back story except for a long distance relationship they had to create some drama in the studio by having those chairs malfunction. To be honest I think it just occurred but it would be interesting to know if she knew the judges were banging on the buttons. We have to wait until tonight before we see if she gets through, which of course she will. Joel will want her for his team as she has the look and style he likes in a contestant.
