My Kitchen Rules – NSW versus Qld aka Health Nuts Versus Trans Fat
The Bondi Boys decided to continue with their own brand of health food to try and get a spot in this Sunday’s Grand final against Dan and Steph from Queensland. It as the trans fat team versus the health freaks. It was going to be interesting to see which team would prevail.
Both teams had to cook a three course meal to be blind tasted by the six judges. Though once they saw the blood sausage on the Queensland team’s plate for their main it would have been a dead giveaway who had cooked which dish.
The Queensland boys cooked Stuffed Quail on a Kale, Fig and Goats Cheese Salad for entree, a salt crusted Swordfish for main and Chocolate Chilli Torte for dessert.
Basically the cooking skills they showed was not fantastic for one cook off before the grand final. In fact their main was a train wreck in both presentation and flavour. Karen Martini smirked and was trying not to crack up when she saw it.
The boys did not try and justify the health benefit of using all that salt in the coating of the fish but they were trying to justify the flavour. Luke thought when all the components of the dish were together it tasted great. However the fish was twice as big as the sides so it was inevitable it would be tasted alone and Liz Egan said hers was too salty. The judges tried to say positive things about it but you knew what they were all thinking.
Has anyone else noted that Luke may have got the Channel Seven contract but it is Scott that does a lot of the hard stuff when it came to the cooking last night. Scott had to cook and stuff the quail as well as cook the swordfish for the main. Whereas Luke is the salad and sides man. To be fair he did do most of the dessert.
Dan and Steph really showed they had some skills last night with their Deconstructed Whiting Nicoise Salad. Not a fan of a deconstructed dish but this time it was inventive, new and flavoursome. Who would have thought of crumbing and deep frying caperberries? The judges thought it was fantastic.
Their main was Babi Guling (Suckling Pig but they used pork belly)with Blood Sausage and Snake Bean Sambal. Dan was busting out his sausage skills but don’t expect to see bottles of blood sold in a Coles near you soon. Even though there was a lack of vegetables with their main the judges were very positive about it. In fact Liz liked the pork so much she wanted to eat everyone elses but first she might want to finish her own…..
The only thing that let them down was their dessert of Frangipane Tart with Yoghurt Sorbet. It was undercooked and Guy Grossi thought the pastry was too thick. Steph was just glad to have the pastry in the tin as she was having difficulty with it.
The boys Chocolate Chili Tart were flavours they had done before and had been successful with as they have previously made chocolate chilli mousse. It showed a lack of repetoire. Also the baking of it showed a lack of mathematical ability. Neither of them could figure out what 56 minus 35 was. This is a question that is likely to be on a Grade 3 Naplan Test. Even Luke admitted to camera he had a hard time to count past ten. Not sure how they think the general public are going to take them seriously with their nutritional advice. Most of their patter tends to be the same that is spouted in the Body and Soul supplement in the Sunday Telegraph plus add in the latest trendy and expensive grain. Clearly Amaranth is so 90’s as they have not mentioned this Amazonian super food once!
Dan and Steph got 46 out of 60 obtaining a mixture of seven and eights from the judges. It was not looking good for the boys when they were getting their critique as the judges did not reveal their scores but in the end they were comprehensively beaten obtaining only 41 points to be eliminated from the competition.
Dan and Steph are the first in to the grand final and are hoping to win the $250,000 to help pay for IVF as they have infertility issues, with a back story like that they are going to be hard to beat. They will be up against the Tassie boys or Jake and Elle. Hopefully it will be a Qld versus Qld grand final.
My Kitchen Rules on Wednesday night at 7.30pm.
