My Kitchen Rules – NSW versus Qld aka Health Nuts Versus Trans Fat

The Bondi Boys decided to continue with their own brand of health food to try and get a spot in this Sunday’s Grand final against Dan and Steph from Queensland. It as the trans fat team versus the health freaks. It was going to be interesting to see which team would prevail.

Both teams had to cook a three course meal to be blind tasted by the six judges. Though once they saw the blood sausage on the Queensland team’s plate for their main it would have been a dead giveaway who had cooked which dish.

The Queensland boys cooked Stuffed Quail on a Kale, Fig and Goats Cheese Salad for entree, a salt crusted Swordfish for main and Chocolate Chilli Torte for dessert.

Basically the cooking skills they showed was not fantastic for one cook off before the grand final. In fact their main was a train wreck in both presentation and flavour. Karen Martini smirked and was trying not to crack up when she saw it.

The boys did not try and justify the health benefit of using all that salt in the coating of the fish but they were trying to justify the flavour. Luke thought when all the components of the dish were together it tasted great. However the fish was twice as big as the sides so it was inevitable it would be tasted alone and Liz Egan said hers was too salty. The judges tried to say  positive things about it but you knew what they were all thinking.

Has anyone else noted that Luke may have got the Channel Seven contract but it is Scott that does a lot of the hard stuff when it came to the cooking last night. Scott had to cook and stuff the quail as well as cook the swordfish for the main. Whereas Luke is the salad and sides man. To be fair he did do most of the dessert.

Dan and Steph really showed they had some skills last night with their Deconstructed Whiting Nicoise Salad. Not a fan of a deconstructed dish but this time it was inventive, new and flavoursome. Who would have thought of crumbing and deep frying caperberries? The judges thought it was fantastic.

Their main was Babi Guling (Suckling Pig but they used pork belly)with Blood Sausage and Snake Bean Sambal. Dan was busting out his sausage skills but don’t expect to see bottles of blood sold in a Coles near you soon. Even though there was a lack of vegetables with their main the judges were very positive about it. In fact Liz liked the pork so much she wanted to eat everyone elses but first she might want to finish her own…..

The only thing that let them down was their dessert of Frangipane Tart with Yoghurt Sorbet. It was undercooked and Guy Grossi thought the pastry was too thick. Steph was just glad to have the pastry in the tin as she was having difficulty with it.

The boys Chocolate Chili Tart were flavours they had done before and had been successful with as they have previously made chocolate chilli mousse. It showed a lack of repetoire. Also the baking of it showed a lack of mathematical ability. Neither of them could figure out what 56 minus 35 was. This is a question that is likely to be on a Grade 3 Naplan Test.  Even Luke admitted to camera he had a hard time to count past ten. Not sure how they think the general public are going to take them seriously with their nutritional advice. Most of their patter tends to be the same that is spouted in the Body and Soul supplement in the Sunday Telegraph plus add in the latest trendy and expensive grain. Clearly Amaranth is so 90’s as they have not mentioned this Amazonian super food once!

Dan and Steph got 46 out of 60 obtaining a mixture of seven and eights from the judges. It was not looking good for the boys when they were getting their critique as the judges did not reveal their scores but in the end they were comprehensively beaten obtaining only 41 points to be eliminated from the competition.

Dan and Steph are the first in to the grand final and are hoping to win the $250,000 to help pay for IVF as they have infertility issues, with a back story like that they are going to be hard to beat. They will be up against the Tassie boys or Jake and Elle. Hopefully it will be a Qld versus Qld grand final.

Daisy, how many tourists are actually there? It looks like Richard Branson’s private island. Are you sure you are not secret millionaires LOL! Is there tv? You need your fix!

AP That’s a good description. It feels like Richard Branson’s private Island. I’ll see if I can snag a millionaire while Woolf is resting. And I’ll get one for Mummy too.

Wish you were all here.

Good idea, bring me one of those kids you were talking about for my son and wife to adopt if Brangelina doesn’t get to them first!

It looks and sounds beautiful Daisy, you are so lucky to be there, wish I was! I will pass on diving information to Rebecca and she can put it on her list of must go to dive spots. Thanks for that. Tell Woolf to eat bananas! Keep enjoying yourselves.

Daisy, I hope it is nothing serious with Woolf. You have to watch out for the hygiene of the food, especially uncool food

Littlepetal. He had his bananas for breakfast.
He is up and about and looking for tlc.
Some turtles hatched on the beac last night so we’re going to have a look and take some photos now.

This blog has been so much nicer since A&S left.
Sorry for your loss RR and thanks for the recaps. Not an MKR fan because of the instant restaurants and the commentary by fellow contestants on the food which is biased and downright nasty all in the name winning. Manu and Pete then give really high scores to try and even out the unfairly scores – having 30 points up their sleeves to each contestants 10.
Masterchef tried contestants voting off other contestants and got canned for it here on this blog so it was never more. Looking forward to MC starting. Just wish producers could only refrain from showing George dividing the food and serving it to the other judges. The time all of that takes could be spent on showing what all contestants cooked.
Stephan and Dan seem nice and they have improved over the competition but Jake and Elle seem to have more knowledge and techniques so on paper they should win. However who knows what happens when they are all under pressure.
Curious admission by Mick about the cinnamon chicken. Not a family recipe but when would they have had time to look it up on the Internet?

17 wallah { 04.25.13 at 2:34 pm }

@bdd 148, he was a liability the minute he shoved abalone into mashed potatoes and troweled cinnamon onto chicken skewers.

18 Reality Raver { 04.25.13 at 2:40 pm }

I had forgotten about the cinnamon rolled chicken skewers. I think that was the worst dish of the series.

19 Anna { 04.25.13 at 2:46 pm }

Emma, there were so many horrible dishes this season…

20 Anna { 04.25.13 at 2:54 pm }

I smell something fishy with MKR!!

How does a team in a few short weeks go from cooking meat in cherry cola to the dishes they created for the grand final (we cook like this at home)…

21 daisy { 04.25.13 at 3:02 pm }

Just remembered… no wonder Woolf got sick. He shouldn’t have eaten the anus bush last night.

22 Littlepetal { 04.25.13 at 3:15 pm }

The other horrible dish was the one cooked by Andi and Josh. The one with heaps of five spice powder.

23 daisy { 04.25.13 at 4:34 pm }

Littlepetal, yes Woolfis feeling his old self again.

24 A.P { 04.25.13 at 4:49 pm }

Anna@170, I believe that D&S practised their dishes every night and every spare minute that they had, unlike some of the other teams who went to the gym or bitched about each other.
They have obviously listened and learnt a lot as the object is to improve over the course of the show which they and some of the others have done.

25 Anna { 04.25.13 at 5:05 pm }

AP, Jake & Elle came in with skill, so hope they get rewarded

If it’s true that they get lessons then they’ve paid off for D&S

26 Techhater { 04.25.13 at 5:12 pm }

Help!!! Its the Woolif!!! Its the Woolif!!! Just joking glad you’re feeling better so that you can enjoy your holiday.

Littlepetal. I forgot all about the 5 spice disaster, don’t know how I managed that, but there have been so many disasters this season I guess it’s easy to forget anyone of them.

27 Littlepetal { 04.25.13 at 5:17 pm }

Kerrie did say D&S practiced and cooked whenever they have the time. I think the producers picked those horrible dishes for them to cook in their instant restaurants (why did they submit those recipes or did the producers changed them slightly?)

I have noticed that D&S have been cooking some fantastic Indonesian dishes which were much better than those sausages.

28 A.P { 04.25.13 at 5:30 pm }

At least Dan has moved on and has stopped talking about his sausage all the time!

29 Paula { 04.29.13 at 5:21 am }

Very disappointed thought jake and Elle were and are superior cooks! My 10 yo daughter wont watch Karen Mancini anymore either I thought she showed a real bias against jake and Elle both in semi final against mick and Matt with unfair scores against jake and Elle. Dan and Steph copied jake and Elle’s techniques and ideas Jake and Elle showed more finesse and grace during the whole series . Even on the night they were charming and gracious before and after the finale while the other two stood there . Wish you all the best jake and Elle you were the true winners!
