Aussie Pickers – A Short Review

Aussie Pickers was pleasant viewing which did not deviate from the format of the popular US version of the show.

The premiere episode saw hosts Lucas Callaghan and Adam McDonald go to the Riverina to “pick”. Picking is when they look through peoples junk to find a treasure which they sell on. Half of the people they visited could have been a candidate for an Australian version of hoarders.

The hosts were likeable and knowledgeable however Lucas needs to toughen up first he was worried about high tight spaces and then he was quaking at a sheep. Quite frankly I would have been more worried about a snake or pack of rats jumping out of them as they went through the stuff.

Adam McDonald clearly has a fetish for industrial lights as he was picking up a few but not sure his Sydney clients will be thrilled when they see the mark up he is putting on.

The pickers have been well cast and are engaging particularly with the banter between themselves and people they are visiting.

One of the weirdest places they visited was a farm where the ladies father-in-law died 30 years ago and they had not emptied or done anything with his homestead. In fact there was vegetation growing throughout it. You would have thought they would find some gems. However all they bought was a teddy bear and a cricket bat for a total of $35.

Will I watch it again? Maybe on a light viewing night possibly. For people who like Bargain Hunt, Antique Roadshow and the American version of this show they should really like Aussie Pickers.

What I do know is that I have now series linked the show after it Duck Dynasty as that was hilarious.

Aussie Pickers on A&E TV on Thursday nights at 7.30pm. Also look out for repeats during the week.

Good review, Raver.
I gave this a go as I like antique and collectibles shows and occasionally watch American Pickers. However, this version was a little clunky in my opinion. While the bearded pickers grew on me towards the end of the show, what was a boring were the mon0syllabic hoarders they visited and the dull-as price negotiations with most of the geriatric sellers adopting a “that’s a hundred bucks, mate” opening ambit for each item. The US version has the advantage of better scenery and more expressive and eccentric sellers. This version’s chick back in the office also needs more tatts and probably an energy drink or two before filming starts. I’m guessing it’ll do okay in the overseas markets. I’ll probably watch one more episode before deciding whether to bother again.

Where to start? I own an antique and collectables shop and not trying to sound like a tool but i do fairly well. I love American Pickers and i Love Canadian Pickers more for some reason? Aussie pickers is very strange, to say the least. I’ve seen all 4 episodes so far about 5 times each. I don’t understand why they walk past so many good things and don’t either notice them or make an offer on them. I pause certain scenes and just see money! I think lucas doesn’t have a clue about motorbikes but is just trying to be like Mike (wolfe, that is), the flop on the fake Indian was huge! Adam flops on the bottles big time in the first episode also! The last episode they buy a sink, fair enough, however i don’t think it’s an item they should have gone into that much detail over for only a $160 profit. That wouldn’t even cover their petrol bringing it home. Also if Lucas likes motorbikes 10 meters away from the sink there were motorbikes stacked together he didn’t even notice. I don’t want to be a hater, i would love for this show to succeed but i don’t see it with these two guys. Lucas is cool but Adam seems like a bit of a tool (I do like his taste in Air Max’s though. Theres too much talking, not enough picking. The name of the game is to make money! One episode 17 minutes into it they make their first buy, ridiculous! Also do we call trash and treasure markets swap meets? Sess seems nice but like the Canadian boys they shouldn’t have tried to find a Danny D wannabe.. The office looks like a set designer set it up, very boring. One thing that really got to me was Lucas walks past 5000 LP albums, the blokes wants $5000 for 5000 albums, a dollar each. wouldn’t you go through em and pick out at least 100 of them? Imsure there would have been stuff like Led Zep, Stevie Wonder, etc. Recognisable names that even if you don’t know anything about music you would pick up that cheap. Some albums can bring $8 to $1000 dollars and more. I could go on forever. I would kill it if i was one of those two guys! Too bad i’m busy in my own shop making cash hand over fist. This show will not last long unless they change up the formula. PS. Adam freaks out over a bat, Mike wolfe would have caught it and bit it’s head off. pffft!

Very disappointed. Totally unprofessional. Also frustrated with their lack of knowledge and ignoring great items. Seems scripted not spontanious. The industry was looking forward to this. Hopefully it doesn’t reflect badly on us as a whole. The ABC’s Auction Room was much better as they had producers with knowledge in collectables and antiques, ie Collectors.

IF AUSSIE PICKERS HAD TO PAY FREIGHT COSTS AND PETROL AND GENERAL EXPENSES THIER OUT THE BACK DOOR, IF YOU ARE GOING TO MAKE A REALITY ANTIQUE SHOW , BE FAIRDINKUM NOT THIS CRAP, PICKING IS ABOUT MAKING MONEY, AND MAKING ENOUGH TO SURVIVE, AND ONE ASPECT, THESE CLOWNS HAVE NOT EVEV COVERED IS GARAGE SALES.

Wow, am I the only one that notices the van they are driving is not the vehicle they are filming in? Sort of like the opposite to the tardis, and they keep reminding each other who is to drive, reality or scripted you tell me! Anyway at least we get to see there is a lot of decent collectors around the country!
