The Block Sky High Premieres And It Does Not Necessarily Lead To Marital Harmony

House Rules looks like it could be in trouble when my partner who hates The Block decided he wanted to watch the latest Sky Rise series. As we know a family who watches reality together stays together.

Well not in this little black ducks case we spent over half episode arguing about the stucco ceilings in the old motel.  To be fair my hackles were up when he asked what suburb The Block was in and I could not answer and he said “Shouldn’t you know these things?”. Fair point. For the record The Block – Sky High is in South Melbourne.

So if there are factual errors in the recap apologies.

For the record the was arguing about the asbestos in the ceilings, and also about how the ceiling were a pain in the arse to paint and I doubted it could occur in the 48 hour challenge.

So chances are we will be eagerly awaiting tonight’s episode to see what they actually do with the ceilings. You would have to presume if there is asbestos in the building that they will remove it.

At one stage last night it looked like The Block would be taking a macabre turn where it was staged to appear all the contestants were checking into a motel but a pretty rundown at that. Maybe they thought this was the result of NINE’s recent budget woes.

It must have felt like they were staying in Overlook Hotel from The Shining and it could have turned into a horror reality TV show with the contestants being told they were not on The Block but they just had to make it out alive. A bit like the 1997 sci-fi horror movie The Cube. (see trailer here)

The voice over told us married couple Bec and George were the first to arrive but in reception waiting were another team.

After they had all had a creepy night wondering if they were getting bed bugs they were rewarded with seeing Scott Cam on the roof of the building. Clearly the relief to see another human was great as Trixie gushed “He is such a handsome man”.

The contestants are:

  • Bec and George  from Vic;
  • Madi and Jarrod from NSW;
  • Alisa and Lysandra from SA;
  • Matt and Kim from WA; and
  • Trixie and Johnno from Qld.

Scott just gave them their first challenge. They would be given $10,000 to renovate a bathroom and bedroom. The team that wins will get the penthouse to renovate.

In summary this is what occurred:

  • George had a small anxiety attack when he took down a bit of a wall and it revealed water pipes, and Bec calculated the wrong amount of tiles that they required;
  • Lysandra and Alisa ignored Scott Cam of course after this they instantly became my favourite team;
  • Matt and Kim showed yet again that WA is the home of the hipster but their navigational skills did not have a lot going for them;
  • Trixie also had navigational issues as her sat nav was not taking her to the correct location, maybe the Tom Tom was protesting about the overt product placement of having Carpet Court plugged into it.
  • Bec and George brought in the whole of their extended family to help with the labour. Which in my mind was unfair when everyone else was struggling to find tradies at short notice;
  • Madi managed to get the vanity ahead of Bec and George but it looks like she is the first person to have the ambo called;
  • Though Trixie looked like she was the first to be in tears but this could have been residual disappointment that she did not get to spend a night in Crown Casino Hotel.

The Block – Sky High on NINE at 7.00pm.

What did you think of the first episode.

Tears and ambulances already. Ch 9 don’t hold back with the schmaltz.

I think that’s one of the twins on a stretcher, isn’t it? Not sure if Bec and George are cut out for this , either.

The first episode was okay but think the set up was OTT- Run down hotel, 1970s kitsh everywhere. Surely, at least one of the contestants must have twigged that the ‘motel’ was the block.

I like George & Bec and I think the whole family sticht was why they were casted. The anxiety attack is probably why it is a good idea to have a room challenge before the block starts proper to weed out the pyschologically weaker contestants.

I know this sound mean but everytime a contestants states they are ‘doing it for the children’ it alienates me.

Channel 9 wouldn’t be stupid to leave asbestos in a building. Would they?

Dave, I think it was either Madi or Kim… the twins are as tough as nails

Bec is high maintenance and highly strung (I know I’ve said it before)… she will be a royal pain through the series.

Princes was not impressed others liked same vanity (well boohoo) and was trying out the throne for size LOL

hmmm 1970’s building might have asbestos… which will cut into their budget to get out…

Or Sky High ? 😉
That was a dummy team waiting in the foyer when Bec & George entered. Not that there’s a difference.

But Maz if they weed out the fragile, all we have is people shopping and tradies renovating.

Have fun watching with hubby, RR!

Nine pushed any residual sense of credibility down the busted elevator shaft with their Bates Motel beginning, and – worst of all – one of the women contestants commenting about how HOT Scott Cam is.

Clearly this fetish for heavily-tooled tradies, which segments of the media are egging on*, has gone to far and is now claiming as many victims as Tom Waterhouse’s forays into wealth re-distribution.

* I am looking at you, the Daily Telegraph.

Veronicali – Oh God I have been calling it High Rise, Sky High and not Sky Rise. Duh!

The roof was vermiculite, so not asbestos.. My parents just has the ceiling in their unit redone, you can just have the vermiculite repainted, but it looks to me like all the contestants are having a false ceiling put in to cover it…

It reeked of fake to me. In every other season the team struggle to get 1 room completed in a week – and then the dreaded bathroom week is near impossible. So then…….. Block producers decided to throw these amateurs (having never done a block Reno) the ridiculous task of renovating a room AND a bathroom in 48 hrs. Sorry to say but the dealer used in bathrooms doesn’t even dry that quickly. So…… FAKE. They were obviously given more time to complete their rooms off camera. Poor start

They are just re-tiling over existing bathrooms that are already waterproofed and plonking new fixtures in for a showroom ‘look’ to win the challenge for storey selection, aren’t they? Not re-plumbing and sealing new rooms.

May all be pulled down/out the following week – especially if they end up swapping floors and someone else’s decisions aren’t what you want for your overall look for your apartment.

Doesn’t need to be waterproofed/sealed/plumbed for that.

11 Culinary Boner { 05.13.13 at 5:00 pm }

Judging by what I hope were just water stains all over the walls of one of the floors, I’d query whether the existing sealing/waterproofing was up to scratch. If they are just doing a pretend reno as a prelude to the real thing, then why not just tell us?
I’ll be switching off from this very soon if they continue the usual histrionics and one more female contestant pipes up about the ruggedly “handsome” exterior of Scott Cam, Australian TV’s most under-rated vag-magnet.
Mr Sooky Pants Indoor Soccer Boy – “he’s so competitive” – was a big fail last night. Less Scotty and more Sooky might keep me watching for a bit longer.
Also what was the rule that allows them to get family, friends, semi-sober tradies found wandering the streets in to help with the reno? This isn’t Celebrity Apprentice, is it?
“Hang on Scottie, just making a call to me parternal godparent Clive Palmer. Hey Clive, can you close one of your mines for 48 hours and send all your workers my way? Thanks champ.”

12 Gabby { 05.13.13 at 6:22 pm }

That’s what I thought CB! How come they are allowed to get all these ring-ins in to help them. Not fare on the interstate teams that don’t know anyone.
As for Scott Cam being a sex symbol, give us a break.

13 Techhater { 05.13.13 at 6:38 pm }

I was channel surfing on the weekend and noticed Scotty Cam being interviewed on Go’s WB Kid’s show. Still can’t figure out why a kid’s show but anyway. He was literally gloating about the amount of fighting on this new season. He was also asked about the power sharing from last season. He fobbed it off as “almost cheating but not quite.” Well we’re in two minds about this season but will give it a chance.

14 Littlepetal { 05.13.13 at 7:10 pm }

I just turned the TV on for the Block and there is the crying. Look like another high drama show

15 Littlepetal { 05.13.13 at 7:34 pm }

Why do they set up all these impossible challenges and then to make us believe that they completed the makeover in the nick of time.

16 Anna { 05.13.13 at 7:41 pm }

It’s not a renovation, but a waste of $50K and a band-aid job

Do they really think viewers are that dumb?

Bec is a pain in the ar$e with her no can do attitude… she is only 25, hate to see her at 45

17 Gabby { 05.13.13 at 8:03 pm }

Bec is a pain in the arse and I am already sick listening to her whinge, we dont see that much of the other girls. Not sure if the twins are going to annoy me or not yet, juries still out.

18 Anna { 05.13.13 at 8:15 pm }

Gabby, give it another week or so….

Twins are as tough as nails and guys might clash with them

19 Techhater { 05.13.13 at 8:24 pm }

I’m curious as to why all the teams keep whinging about the stairs. We all know there are elevators. Well at least one as we saw them use it last night. Why aren’t they using it.

20 Anna { 05.13.13 at 8:35 pm }

Big job, but how bad do they expect the owners cooking to be?

“In just 10 weeks they must “demo and reno” more than 80 rooms and transform each floor of the hotel into a 220-square metre luxury apartment complete with three bedrooms and five bathrooms, with open plan kitchen, living and dining, plus a huge enclosed terrace”

3 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms… can understand 4 but 5?

21 Techhater { 05.13.13 at 8:53 pm }

Anna I agree that makes no practical sense whatsoever. Unless they’re calling a loo and sink, a bathroom. Like they did a couple of seasons ago with the toilet under the stairs fiasco.

22 Maz { 05.13.13 at 11:12 pm }

Techhater@13-According to this week’s TV Guide in SMH (p5) there is “500,000-plus under 15-year olds who watch the Block’. This may explain the cross promotion on the kids programme.

My theory on the 30 bathrooms is no-one is expecting this building to last as 5 luxury apartments but to be illegally sub-divided and crammed with 100 uni students per floor. Happens in Sydney so we imagine the practice is common place in Melbourne as well.

23 Techhater { 05.13.13 at 11:32 pm }

Maz thanks for the stats on under 15’s. Still don’t like the fact that he promoted the fighting etc as a good thing to watch. And that’s a very interesting theory re. uni students’ accommodation. I wonder if they’ll get to use the elevator. Lol

24 Gabby { 05.14.13 at 8:36 am }

TH maybe the elevator is off limits so there are no fights or maybe they are scared of it breaking down. Shocking that Cam is promoting fights, lets hope that’s not the new way of Reality shows, thinking they need this mayhem between teams to attract the audience.
Surely Bec cannot get any worse and maybe you are right Anna the twins look pretty tough and could very well give any of those guys a run for their money.

25 Anna { 05.14.13 at 9:23 am }

Gabby, I’m afraid we’ve not seen Bec’s meltdowns & the aftermath … Seriously high strung princes should not be an a reality TV show

Feel sorry for her hubby if they don’t get the penthouse

It’s a good thing they are all on separate levels… That way they don’t have to put up with each other… No chance of forming alliances either

Then again cannot see twins joining in, it’s state vs state this year.

26 Gabby { 05.14.13 at 11:42 am }

I so hope Bec doesn’t win the Penthouse. As you say Anna, feel sorry for her husband though. What a princess.

27 Techhater { 05.14.13 at 11:58 am }

Anna i’m pretty sure Scotty Cam did say on the weekend that there were going to be alliances. Because that was what brought up the subject of power sharing and whether it was cheating or not.

I really hope Trixie doesn’t cry EVERY episode. And please Ch9 ease up on the backstory crap. Let’s just see some good old fashioned competitive reno’s.

28 Anna { 05.14.13 at 12:39 pm }

Techhaters, no tears or background crap??? Impossible!!!

Trixie will cry (we need one cryer) Bec will complain & bitch. Twins have brass balls & it will get them far. Not sure about the other 2
couples just yet

Scotty is annoying !!! Will be good to see Keith kicking ass lol

29 Techhater { 05.14.13 at 12:50 pm }

Anna I love Keith and the drama (if that’s the right word) that he brings to the show. And it looks like that might start tonight judging by the promos.

30 Anna { 05.14.13 at 3:04 pm }

Techhater, hope it gets contestants on their toes… Fights will start as soon as they all need to carry things up & down the stairs.

Nastiest outbursts will be shown…

I have no net connection today, provider tells me that things fell over on their arse very early & will be back at the earliest 5pm …they’ll text

Don’t they know I have social life to uphold!! LOL
