Masterchef Australia – The Black Forest Gelato Challenge Sends Two More Home

The way the commenting was going last night it looked like the episodes plot line was going to be Kelty stuffing up and Jules coming in to save the day.

Surprisingly it did not go that way.

Tonight the remaining contestants who were trying to get back in the competition and the ones going for an immunity pin were placed into three teams of four.

It was a three hour relay challenge where they had to make a Black Forest Gelato set by Nick Palumbo. Also they had to make it in a freezer.

Dan kicked it off for the red team which consisted of him, Noelene, Jules and Kelty. He ended up puting the semi-freddo in the wrong mould. Lucky for him Gary and Nick came in and pointed out his mistake. Gary Mehigan said “Good job we came along”. Interesting they did not look at the other teams semi-freddo.

Rishi on the yellow team was like a machine and gave his team a great start, conversely Neha for the blue team was slow out of the blocks. Vern, Xavier and Nicky were looking frustrated.

The second member in was Liliana for the yellow team, Noelene for the red team, and Nicky for the blue.

They were cooking in a thermonix which I had thought were virtually fool proof. Liliana was solid setting up he chocolate fondant gelato for Samira. Samira had a disaster.

When she poured the chocolate gelato in the ice cream maker she did not turn it on properly. This meant their structure was very wonky indeed.

Kelty was third to cook for the red team also mucked up the chocolate gelato by not waiting for it to get down to two degrees. He then did not split it into two ice cream churners. Again this meant it did not set properly in the moulds.  There is a recipe for a reason.

Verne whose team was a bit of a mess showed he was competent by working like a machine and catching with the other teams. In fact they were doing so well that by the time it was the last ten minutes and the others were allowed into help assemble it, the blue team had finished.

Jules with her “I better fix these dickhead’s face on” could not overcome both Dan and Kelty’s mistakes and when the gelato was cut the semi-freddo started melting immediately. 

The yellow team had to put a chocolate dome on their bottom as the gelato was so soft. George praised their ingenuity saying you had to do this in the restaurant industry. Whereas Matt said it looked different from the original.

In the end it was the red team sent home with Jules looking devastated she was out of the competition again and this time because of her team mates.

This means Xavier, Nicky, Liliana or Samira will get back in. None of these will threaten the current top ten.

I just found out I would be a perfect candidate for season 6. Made ice cream cones, first one ever made in my life looked perfect (for real!!!). Was so excited that I wanted it to show my boyfriend. Well, out of excitement I dropped it on the floor and broke it.
But then again, I wouldn’t be a perfect candidate as my cones actually taste amazing. 😀

Turns out all the other ones look like.. don’t know… as if I had already taken some bites off them. It’s really not easy rolling oven-hot stuff with your bare hands!
I actually wanted to make an ice cream posting for my blog. But everything didn’t turn out great. What I didn’t realize: The French don’t sell nice strawberries in July, so I bought cherries (dark, juicy ones) and used them for the cheesecake ice cream. *narf*

If the blog’s finished then I could link it. It’s in English, not in French so it is hopefully understandable. 😀

I think Xav’s dish reflected how long he had had out of the competition and the amount of tutelage he had missed as a result. I think he actually did something that most of the contestants fail to do – cook to ability.

So annoyed right now. Samira – can’t believe it (though it was clear that they wanted to give rishi the pin from the start)

And I absolutely detest her tit for tat voice overs. Every single time its: I sucked at this but rishi did that. Take responsibility for your own dishes.

Was so hoping for lynton to win because he seemed genuinely invested in liliana’s survival which was different from all the minemineminemine going on.

Seeing an invention test made me so ‘home sick’ for proper cooking

Leave semira in Dubai MC AU – she COOKED with pork that’s a capital punishment in that region right?

Xavier what an uninspiring dish, wasn’t nickys the worst dish not lyntons?

Too many team challenges why not split the elimination and reentry for the last challenge up so best of both win?

People whom respond here would be better producers V $hines current lot.

I’d love one of those thermomixes too, they’ve done stories on ACA about them and people have raved about them, but they are very expensive. I’d love one of those ice cream churners too. But all these fancy gadgets will have to wait till I’ve won Lotto and have a nice big house with a HUGE kitchen to store them all.

I would never go to Dubai on principle. They make out on all those tourist shows that it is westernised, but it isn’t. That poor Norwegian girl that was raped and then they throw HER in jail for having sex outside of marriage. Only because there was an outcry they did let her go. Same thing happened to an Aussie woman recently. It is a barbaric country with barbaric laws. Ok rant over. Sorry, but stories like this make my blood boil.

Lilianna was ripped off. Her dish looked amazing, but Lynton cost her chances of getting back in.

Daisy totally agree with your outburst! Feel exactly the same! Stupid, stupid producers, makes me mad!!!! Liliana with her yummy dish of the day is out and someone with average and too sweet desert is in????????!!!!!!!!!! Pathetic show! …. Unless they are making controversial decisions on purpose to create discussion and hence more publicity?? Might be a pathetic attempt to get others to watch to find out what all the fuss is about. As we know ratings are everything!

And as far as I know, this year’s ratings suck. Wasn’t Mr. Preston saying in an interview, that MCA is about cooking unlike MKR?

Carole, I feel the same about Dubai. Such a country shouldn’t be in a spotlight. Who cares about the fact that there some of the richest people in the world living and investing their money in Dubai? A country, that puts a woman into jail who was raped and then they call it sex outside of marriage? Just wow, honestly.

RR we have a Thermomix at home and it’s pretty amazing. You can use it to weigh ingredients, chop them, cook them, steam them, you can whip cream in it, knead bread etc and it really is idiot proof, even if you stuff up the recipe it usually tastes pretty good. And everything you cook takes less time, I can whip up a curry in 30 mins (from scratch). If you do a lot of cooking it’s definitely worth the cost (though I hear you can get pretty cheap ones off eBay). The only downside is that it’s a bit fragile, if you dent the top of the silver bit the lid won’t fit and the whole machine is stuffed.

Thermomix, I had the pleasure to own a used one a few years ago. The mother of my then-boyfriend bought herself a new one and gave the old one to us. I was totally amazed by it because it could do everything (I stood next to it and watched it making my smoothie). We Germans we produce not only nice cars but great mixers as well.
Btw, fun fact, in Germany you only get it when one of the Vorwerk-guys comes at your home and shows you how to use it. I can remember being a child, my granny owned a Vorwerk vacuum cleaner (like every good German housewife) and once a month an overly smiley salesman came by to show the newest stuff and sell her the vacuum bags because you couldn’t buy them in a regular store. I was always creeped out by that guy and hid behind my granny.

Now I “only” own a Kitchen Aid, the most perfect thing to be honest. It beats everything, batter, whipped cream, mayo. Love it. I am still thinking about getting some extensions. Anyone here who owns a Kitchen Aid and has some add ons? I’m into the pasta maker or the ice cream machine.

Anna, sounds like Michelle and Commandos’s trip away to The Hamptons I read about a couple of weeks ago didn’t go so well. All krill and no thrill.

Note to $hine . Dubbo would be a better destination than Dubai for this year’s appalling attempt at a television show.

Vow they got rid of Liliana because she cooked dish of the day and Lynton can still continue in the competition because he cooked worst. I am not sure if I can conveniently call it as a cooking competition anymore.What would you call it? It just seem to me a set up to let people with low calibre to take out masterchef title. I am confused!

Damn, Xavier let me down by playing safe and letting Samira back in. I hope she’s the next kicked out again. Also I hope Lynton stuffed that up intentionally (secretly) because Liliana would have been a major threat that even a little immunity pin wouldn’t have kept him safe from.

Despite my dislike of Samira I think the judges chose correctly.

I think its very unfair to dub Dubai as barbaric and anti-women. I lived there for 17 years, and I have never felt it that way. I had friends at school from all parts of the world and we had a great time growing up there. Its actually one of the more modern and safer cities in the Middle East today.

Also I got the feeling that the judges really wanted to give immunity pin/comeback to Vern/Nicky or Lynton/Lilliana. But those two horrible sweet dishes just gave them no chance of redemption. With Neha/Xavier playing safe, I feel Rishi/Samira deserved it. Also with it being a team challenge, shouldn’t they try to help out or discuss what their partners are upto. Dont think Lilliana was smart leaving the pastry dish for Lynton.

Anna #112 well, why aren’t we all surprised? lol Wish Commando luck re-building his family’s life again though. Michelle’s lifestyle was not suited to him, too fast, too showy, too celebrity. Made him cringe imo.

Alex C #106 – Yes, you can buy pork in Dubai. They just have a sectioned off place in supermarkets for pork products.

Daisy # 98 – you can actually buy alcohol in Dubai, you just need an annual licence to do so – the large hotels would cook with alcohol, as they’d be licenced.

In general Dubai is the most westernised city in all of the Middle East. The school my son attended had the UK curriculum, you weren’t forced to put your children into Islamic schools for example. I loved living there, it is a very busy and exciting city.

@Zhee we have most of the KitchenAid extensions–ice cream maker, pasta maker, ice cream maker, mincer, sausage maker … I love her and call her Antoinette! I highly recommend the ice cream maker; they make the most /amazing/ ice creams.

I’m also incredibly tempted with the Thermomix (a cousin has one) but might invest in a sous vide machine first though.

GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH to Samira getting back, and I agree–Jules and Lilliana were totally ripped off.

Kitchen Aid if you like doing stuff from scratch. Thermomix if you want to throw stuff in the mixer and let it do its magic.
I think also if you do a lot of baking Kitchen Aid is the way to go!
There’s no such thing as ‘too many appliances in the kitchen’ Daisy XD

Thermomix is incredibly expensive. Don’t know how much you pay for it in Australia, but here it’s about 1.020 Eruo, guess it should be then around 1.500 Australian dollars (at least that’s what the exchange table showed me^^).
The Kitchen Aid is cheaper, but, the extensions still are very pricy. I guess I go with the pasta maker first. I have an ice cream maker although it only fits 1 liter. It’s fine for 2 people and it doesn’t take away too much storage. :)

And thank god I am not the only one giving a name to the Kitchen Aid. I called her Madeleine (esp. because I love eating Madeleines^^). I also think that retro look is so absolutely adorable. Mine’s white, wanted the berry coloured one but it wasn’t in stock at that time.

Shouldn’t these “cooks” be using other ways of actually cooking and not using such aids as thermomixes. I know they have a time limit and you can only do certain things in a time frame but what I can’t believe is the bowling ball ice-cream cake recipe is on the website. Great when I get a thermomix or 3, a blast chiller, gelato machine and a freezer the size of a room I will give it a go. (Thermomix is close to $2000)

Ouch, it’s even more expensive than in Europe? Well okay, then again it’s import to Australia, they need to change a lot (I suppose your sockets are different than the EU ones). They need those changes for UK and Ireland as well as they still don’t have EU sockets discovered yet. Lived in Ireland for a couple of years and I bought tons of adapters. 😉

Yeah, EVERYTHING is more expensive here. It annoys me when I go to America and see how cheap things like alcohol are compared to here.
