Emma Dean Wins Masterchef

Emma Dean wins Masterchef Season Five. She wins $100,000, an alfa romeo, and a cookbook deal. She is getting straight into it and has already bought a second hand commercial kitchen and aims to open a restaurant.

Lynton was runner up who was given $20,000 by American Express and Samira was given $10,000.

If you want to know what happened in a very lacklustre finale read below.

Updating live blog on the finale for Season Five of Masterchef.

After Rishi being eliminated last week the finale is wide open between Emma, Samira and Lynton.

Who do you want to win?

And it kicks off saying they have gone from home cooks to culinary superstars. I think that might be a tad exaggeration considering they have been told what the first challenge is going to be tonight.

7.35pm: The prize is $100,000, an alfa romeo and a book deal.

7.37pm: Emma says she was lost prior to Masterchef as she had been made redundant. Lynton talked about the accident that occurred to his sister and how he cooked for her 3-4 times a day, and Samira talked about her post-natal depression.

7.45pm: In the Masterchef kitchen had the contestants restaurant dreams in it. Emma was given a farm gate table, Samira a modern middle eastern restaurant, and high end restaurant in the Top End. But Gary who looked like he had taken a truth serum and told them it was a little out of your grasp, however he meant they just had to win and their restaurant dream could come true.

7.48pm: The first round was having to make three plates of their best dish. The judges said they told them what the challenge was earlier because they wanted perfection, however you know they will put up with good. They had 90 minutes to cook. Lynton said he had practiced for two days.

7.50pm: Three rounds the person with the lowest score after two rounds will be eliminated.

7.52pm: Lynton was making beef (sous vide) with a cauliflower puree, onion jam and a complex jus. Haven’t we seen simliar before this series?

7.53pm: Samira was also busting out the sous vide. She was making Confit of Salmon with cerleriac remoulade, walnut salad. She said she had made it ten times over the weekend.

7.54pm: Emm was making the perfect Roast Chicken which was stuffed with truffles. They were big chickens and also she had turned one of her ovens off where she had a big cabbage roasting in it. She said she had to re-think it. It will be interesting to see what she can do.

7.55pm: How do yo turn off an oven accidentally?

7.58pm: Samira clearly did not practice the mayonnaisse as she had to do it twice, she also forgot to oil the pan and her salmon skin stuck.

8.02pm: Samira skin another salmon just for the skin. Is there something morally wrong with that?

8.04pm: Spoiler alert – Emma’s eyes look red in the too camera pieces.

8.05pm: Samira’s meal looks great on the plate. Hers was tasted first. George thought it was spectacular. Matt Preston said it was the pinnacle of what you have done so far. Samira’s was the most original out of the three dishes.

8.08pm: Lynton cooked his steak medium rare. Matt said you have never had dish of the day but today might be your day.

8.10pm: Emma’s roast chicken also got good reviews. Matt thought it was almost a perfect re-invention of roast chicken. What? So no one has ever stuffed a chicken with truffles before?

8.15pm: Samira scored 26/30 for her salmon, Emma scored 26/30, and Lynton scored a perfect score of 30/30.

8.20pm: Second round is they have to cook for 20 guests in their restaurants and they had to cook with chicken and they had 3 hours.

8.30pm: Lynton is making a south east asian chicken and smoked out the kitchen, thankfully no sprinklers. Emma was making a chicken gratin with salt baked potatoes.

8.33pm: Samira was making stuffed chicken wit pine nuts and pomegranates with a pumpking puree. Her first plate was raw.

8.35pm. Three hours of prep and there was not alot on their plates maybe three components tops? Lynton has BBQ chicken with a salad. Emma has the gratin with the potato with some bread to dip.

8.37pm: Gary and Matt liked Emma’s dish. Lynton served his Sambal chicken cold which Matt thought may have been a mistake.

8.40pm: Samira’s chicken was being panfried at the end as some was raw. Lucky for her the judges got a well cooked chicken, but the pumpkin puree was cold. Gary took this as trouble in the kitchen.

8.50pm: Since the contestants did not have all weekend to cook the scores dropped. Samira scored 22 points, Lynton 21 points and Emma scored 23 points. Which saw Samira was eliminated. Emma and Lynton are into the final challenge and Emma is two points behind Lynton on 49 points.

8.56pm: Third round is a pressure test and it was set by Ben Shewry from Attica. They were making the plight of the bees. It was a dessert. There were mandarins, thin meringue, pumpkin, freeze dry honey. They had two hours to make it.

9.05pm: Clearly the peanut gallery have been told to call out and no one yelled out even though Lucy was saying one of the other spectators someone tell her she had added in the lemon juice at the wrong time. Noelene was yelling out read your recipe.

9.10pm Though they did yell out to Emma when she was over whipping her cream. Also Lynton was told by the judges to re-do his pumpkin layer.

9.22pm: This is the dullest finale ever.

9.27pm: Before tasting Lynton’s dish the judges talk about his sister. Ben thought the flavours were pretty good. They liked the pumpkin and Gary said we were worried about that completely forgetting that they told him to change it. They said there was no crunch in the meringue and a grain in the curd.

9.34pm: Emma’s was praised for her crunchy meringue but her granita was more acidic.

9.41pm: Finally the announcemet. Former winners are there, except for Kate Bracks who said she was drowning in her food dream.

9.43pm: And we are waiting….. Lynton scored 7/10 from Gary, 8/10 from George and Matt scored 8/10 and Ben gave a 7/10 for a total of 30/30. He is now on 81 points.

9.44pm: Emma’s score: Gary gave her a 9/10, George gave her a 9/10, Matt gave her 9/10 and Emma was the winner we did not get to see Ben’s score but going off her total 85 points he must have given her a nine as well.

9.46pm: Lynton won $20,000 from American Express and Samira gave her $10,000 to start their culinary career.

abc, I’m sure that will make her happy for you. But she is already happy about and with you. :)

2 Eliza { 09.03.13 at 4:34 pm }

abc, as long as you feel better about you as well 😉 have you read articles about sleep and weight loss? Not just about eating through the night, but also your hormones and chemicals become imbalanced when you don’t get enough sleep and this can affect weight loss.

It feels weird not having MC to whinge about each night!

3 abc { 09.04.13 at 12:49 am }

@diasy @eliza: i love you two gals. u r girls right.

4 daisy { 09.04.13 at 1:21 am }

abc, hang on a sec while I check.

Hmmmmmm 😉

5 daisy { 09.04.13 at 1:23 am }

If there is a penis, I promise, no more than one
(see the bach thread).

6 daisy { 09.04.13 at 1:24 am }

7 daisy { 09.04.13 at 1:27 am }

Sorry abc, I shouldn’t be teasin’ ya.

Do I sound like a man. LOL.

8 daisy { 09.04.13 at 1:40 am }

Don’t tell her I told you, but I think Eliza is a man.

9 daisy { 09.04.13 at 1:55 am }

Just waiting for her shift to start……

10 abc { 09.04.13 at 3:39 am }

11 daisy { 09.04.13 at 7:11 am }

She’s a gay man.

12 daisy { 09.04.13 at 7:48 am }

Don,t forget I’m too hrs behing so it was only 5am when I made the last comment.
I can’t take any caffeine in the afternoon, especially when it is from ground beans. It’s like granny speed (there’s a clue for you abc). :)

13 daisy { 09.04.13 at 7:51 am }

Oh and if you want to catch up, you can find me on Big Brother.

14 Tokyo Watcher { 09.04.13 at 8:55 am }

RR, just a small correction – it was Samira that got $10,000. Amina was from series 4.

15 Culinary Boner { 09.04.13 at 11:15 am }

Been busy, so will finally say my piece.

No Rishi meant absolutely no razzle, no shizzle…
instead we got a very, very boring, cooking-by-numbers MasterFrump 2013 finale complete with a funnel shoved down our throats so that we could be force fed (again) the heart-wrenching backstories of these three utterly unremarkable reality TV cooking show contestants.

Please, please save the paper and don’t bother releasing Emma’s cookbook. Rehashing roast chicken with black truffles slipped under the skin? FFS. Why not just whack a photo of bare-armed Emma in a frumpy apron standing over a rustic table in a farmhouse kitchen on the cover of the next edition of Larousse Gastronomique?

“Next year will be all about the cooking”, intones Gary for the fourth year running, while George flicks through GQ Magazine looking for articles on how to rock a pair of jodhpurs* and Matt chows down on his third vanilla slice for the morning, nonchalantly flicking the crumbs off his cravat.

16 daisy { 09.04.13 at 11:16 am }

CB Have you been reading the BB thread, about men who pluck.

17 Culinary Boner { 09.04.13 at 11:21 am }

Pluck a duck, no daisy.
Perhaps I’ll mosey on over.

18 Rosie { 09.04.13 at 11:32 am }

Is that you modelling the jodhpurs, CB? 😀

19 Culinary Boner { 09.04.13 at 11:53 am }

No Rosie, but just to let you and daisy know, I (recent picture below) was tweezing the assets well before it became mainstream:

20 abc { 09.05.13 at 4:18 am }

interesting piece of info. Samira is just followed by rishi in tweeter. Strange these people are. :)

21 Alec C { 09.05.13 at 6:42 am }

Final dish required 18 MONTHS to come up with from a professional chef? It didn’t seem that good to be honest Croc tower and V8 cake miles ahead in technicality and cookery.

What was the ingredient that used in almost EVERY process?

Matt P said because of style Lynton got a higher score then gave Emma a MUCH higher score? 2 Nines and 100% people knew Lynton was DOOMED.

Emmas frozen graneta was served second did this aid her dish because it had time to go from flash frozen to the right constancy?

BLIND TESTING, bottom 2 in each ‘team challenge’ fight in elimination until top 10. New Judges less Maggie verjuice and NO MORE STUPID PETER GILMOUR SNOW GLOBES!(yes still mad at all star final dish practically same dish…)

Whatever happened to the finals cooking for the top 50 chefs in AU/world or whatever? 3 people 20 people 4 people(only 3 vote) give the invited chef 50% of the votes to prevent judge fudgeary.

Larger sample size = less chance judges can vote for their favs or what the producers want.

Mentoring a contestant automatic absenteeism for them by said judge. Or set up a system where advice = X points subtracted depending on level of help given.
