The Voice Australia – Is Former Idol Contestant Sabrina Batshon A Contestant?

Screen shot 2014-04-14 at 9.38.09 PM

It looks like former Australian Idol alumni Sabrina Batshon is giving  The Voice Australia a shot. Sabrina who was on the last season of Australian Idol in 2009 was very memorable due to her quite the polarising contestant. You either liked or loathed her.

When Sabrina, who made the top ten was eliminated from Australian Idol she controversially slammed the show in The Australian saying it was a reality show not a singing show.

The 2009 article stated:

“I have never been a fan of Idol” Batshon said yesterday. “And I was never under any illusion the voting was fair.”

She insisted the show was not a “one-way ticket to a music career” and did not recommend anyone under 18 entering as they could get caught up in the fakeness of it all.

“It is not a singing competition, it is a reality TV show,” Batshon said.

“None of it is real. Most of what the judges tell you is not real or factual, often it is just for show and entertainment.

Hopefully she is over her dislike of the manipulation of reality TV as The Voice is far more manipulated then Idol ever was. Last year the winner was promoted from the start, but since Sabrina is likely to have a compelling back story story so that may give her more air time.

Here she is from her time on Idol:

And here is the latest sneak peek from The Voice Australia where you see a quick flash of what looks like Sabrina calling her “The Phenomenon”.

The Voice Australia on NINE soon.

I for one will be watching for Sabrina!

I agree she was polarizing but damn her voice was amazing

2 daisy { 04.15.14 at 10:49 am }

Thanks for the clip Emma. I forgot who she was until I saw that. She reminds me of Anette Funiccello, in looks only.

3 Reality Raver { 04.15.14 at 11:21 am }

She was definitely a colourful character and I quite liked her. Though I listened to some of her Idol performances yesterday. Some good ones but some very patchy ones as well. If she wants to get through she will have to be consistent. Also sad to see Jay Dee the judge on the last season who later died unexpectedly I think it was suicide.

“I have never been a fan of the show and it is totally fake. I’m only just saying that after I voluntarily entered the show and was shit canned it tenth place, but I have totally always held that view!”

These f*****g people, I swear…

2009 was 5 years ago, I would dare say she is matured up, her vocals have improved, and if she is on The Voice I would say she could win it. She has my vote and well done for not giving up.

6 brain dead dave { 04.17.14 at 1:01 pm }

She’ll lose and blame the show , as before.

7 Carol (without the e) { 04.17.14 at 1:57 pm }

Friends of mine have been to the live tapings of the show. They love Kylie, Joel and Ricky… but they said is a complete asshole. He’s ON for the camera and then switches off completely. The others all respond to the audience (mostly) but this guy is a complete wanker and ignores everyone (except maybe the director). The warm up guy does his job well by getting the audience to respond on queue and 3 of the stars work with him… but Mr I Am thinks he’s above everyone else.

A complete 2 faced wanker that won’t last long in this country once word gets out what he’s REALLY like!!!

[…] One contestant already identified is Sabrina Batshon a former Australian Idol contestant. […]

Dear Brain Dead Dave. Your name fits the comments you made.
As far as Sabrina goes, her voice says it all. It does not need brains ( let alone the dead ones) to recognise that.

10 brain dead dave { 04.25.14 at 10:29 pm }

Her voice does indeed say it all and her sullen blaming of the show Australian Idol for revealing that she’s not a unique snowflake says even more. I’m not tone deaf.

11 Samantha { 05.12.14 at 8:12 pm }

When I went to the lve taping I noticed turn on for the cameras but as soon as they were off he was in his own world. I can relate to that. I think a lot of people can. Some people see it as being an arsehole but it’s more about recharging… or being introspective.

12 Thor { 05.13.14 at 11:36 am }

Wow, I was watching last night and when Sabrina was on the stage, my wife said she’s so familiar. We were guessing what reality she was on before. But Sabrina’s performance was really good last night with the Power of Love song! All the best for her!

13 daisy { 05.13.14 at 11:53 am }

Yeah Sabrina sure can sing. And she is good at milking the back story too. I remember her hanging her issues out on the line on the last show.
But of course good luck too her. Her voice is really good.

These people are a lot better than what we had on US Idol this year, but that wasn’t a stretch.

14 Carol (without the e) { 05.13.14 at 12:14 pm }

I loved Sabrina’s performance and thought she reminded me of a younger Tina Arena… both in looks and sound.

Of course it’s only one song… so I hope she can keep up the quality.

15 Linz { 05.25.14 at 4:50 pm }

Whenever I hear the song, the Power of Love, I will think of the way Sabrina sang it and nobody else…what Power!

16 daisy { 05.25.14 at 4:58 pm }

Carol without@7, Wow. I will be looking for signs of the wanking Willie. He was one of the very, very, very few talent show judges I have ever liked.
I will be observing Willie for signs of a dickhead.

17 Deano { 05.25.14 at 5:53 pm }

I don’t think Sabrina will survive the battle rounds

18 daisy { 05.25.14 at 6:22 pm }

I suppose that depends who they put her up against Deano. I think she could beat a few of the others, such as Hayley and some others whose names I can’t recall.
But I don’t remember who team she is in and who she is against.

19 Deano { 05.25.14 at 6:32 pm }

Battle round is a good opportunity to weed out some dud contestants.

20 Carol (without the e) { 05.26.14 at 11:04 am }

Daisy @ 16… I have done a complete turnaround on now.

I saw him on a show being interviewed/followed around by Joanna Lumley…

Now I think Samantha @ 11 was right in her description of him.

He might keep to himself… and be concentrating on business… but he’s a really intelligent, generous, talented, community minded guy.

How’s that for a 180?

21 daisy { 05.26.14 at 11:14 am }

Well don’t worry Carol, without. I was only going to watch and see.
He really does seem a funny, down to earth guy…and I usually hate talent show judges.

What is surprising me is that I am not minding Kylie. She also seems very authentic. Delta couldn’t stop posing, posturing and making it all about her. Even when coaching she was dressed to kill, whereas you wouldn’t even notice what Kylie was wearing. She was really focussed on her coaching. I’m not a fan of the singing but she seems like an OK person.
The judges camaraderie seems real too.
Joel is being less of a dick this year too.

22 daisy { 05.26.14 at 11:40 am }

Thanks for the link Carol. You can see he is grounded. And of course JL is ab fab as always.

23 Carol (without the e) { 05.26.14 at 11:54 am }

No surprises Daisy… we agree on Kylie and Delta. You nailed it for me perfectly. Delta was all about her… the hair, the moves, the clothes and even the way the responded to the music.

Kylie is so much more natural in every way.

I’m not a Kylie fan, so I don’t speak with bias… it’s purely observation and (according to my husband) the lower amount of anger/frustration in watching the judges. I’m enjoying this years more than last. I LOVE Ricky but we’d have to expand to 5 judges if Keith was to come back as a judge. I’d be happy with 5… wouldn’t you?

Oh and if you like Joanna Lumley and are interested in the Northern Lights… you had better have a look at this:

24 Carol (without the e) { 05.26.14 at 11:56 am }

Oh and RR thank you for enabling us to share links. There are so many places online where you can’t and it’s refreshing to be able to do it here. You know we are all addicted and can’t resist coming back, so it’s not like we are going to be eternally distracted by a YouTube clip!

25 daisy { 05.26.14 at 12:05 pm }

I reckon they have taken the ‘uber cool way down’ (thank goodness). I couldn’t bear Seal, and they seemed to make each other all try to out-cool one another.
I didn’t like Keith either because he was trying to be cool sitting with his leg up.
But this year they are just being normal, which I like.

I like when Willie was showing off about his factories etc, because he was just mucking around.

BTW has anyone seen the morning news reader on Studio 10; a dead ringer for a young Emma Peel from the original Avengers TV series.

Yeah and huge thanks RR for letting us blither-blather, crack off-topic jokes and make friends.

26 Brad { 06.02.14 at 11:45 am }

Have never understood the Delta bashing. She came across as a little insecure at times but Kylie, surprisingly, has also done that but in spades. She also made a couple of choices I disagreed with but struth, I think they are forgivable. I have always thought that the ‘tall poppy syndrome’ was a largely made up phenomenom by Australian media that didnt want to see spoilt brat behavior, but I actually think that Delta may be a victim of it.

27 Carol (without the e) { 06.02.14 at 12:22 pm }

Brad maybe it’s a female/male perceptions thing. I’ve never liked Delta and was never able to really work out what it was exactly that annoyed me so. But when she appeared on The Voice it just amplified my thoughts. Then Daisy nailed it for me (# 21). She couldn’t just sit and listen to someone… she had to be swaying around… waving her arms… showing off what she was wearing… attracting attention.

I know a lot of people would say that anyone that doesn’t like her is just jealous. Well I can assure you that I’m not. It’s also got nothing to do with the tall poppy syndrome. I think it’s more to do with Delta’s vanity than anything else. She’s probably not even aware of it.

Kylie is just as beautiful and way more successful… and yet NOTHING she’s done on The Voice has irritated me the way Delta did. That’s not because I’m a fan of Kylie’s either. I just prefer her as a Voice judge over Delta.

I’m not saying you are wrong… I’m just sharing my perspective as a female. That’s what I love about this site. You can do that without being howled down.

28 Brad { 06.02.14 at 9:56 pm }

I recently saw a list that was compiled last year of Australia’s top 100 vocalists. As coincidence would have it I had not long prior to seeing the list come up with my top three current female vocalists which included Vanessa Amorosi, Jessica Mauboy and Delta Goodrem. I hadnt thought hard about less recent artists but did think that Tina Arena would be there somewhere. Now, I was right about all except Delta, who in fact didnt even make the top 100. Kyle came in at 51. How the hell does that happen? I have never bought the music of any of the above artists apart from a Mauboy cd for my niece but think I have an ear for a good voice. I know the list was compiled by other artists but for the life of me can only come up with jealousy.
I am not the kind of person that a talent show coach would find hard to piss off. I have written-off Nat Bassingthwaighte and before Dami couldnt stand Danni. I’m actually finding myself feeling a little sorry for Kylie as it’s like she is out of her depth but I think I forgave Delta because she was younger and genuinely very talented.
The best singer of the x-factor coaches is Keating but the show doesnt claim to be about just a voice. The Voice now has no real voice, the best being Ricky Martin. Regardless, I dont dislike any of them, but I would still prefer that the talent had the opportunity to choose someone that was true vocalist as a coach and I believe that Delta fulfilled that role.
