My Kitchen Rules – The Twins Were Out Of Their Depth
Paul and Blair must be a little bit bitter and twisted after seeing the second semi final on My Kitchen Rules. As expected Vikki and Helena failed to fire and it was all over for them when they put store bought biscuits into their dessert.
The twins had to change the dessert they were making as their Burnt Butter Ice Cream did not set. Their dessert was originally meant to be Greek Almond Biscuits with Burnt Butter Ice Cream and Greek Coffee. They turned it into a Greek Tiramisu in the final 30 minutes. Either Italian biscuits were in the MKR pantry or some poor sod had to run off to find Italian biscuits nearby.
It was interesting to note not one of the judges mentioned the store bought biscuit issue in their review of the dessert. But I expect Kelly was the only one who was speaking the truth when it came to judging the food tonight. She just pulled a face that said “yuck”. It seemed a very cobbled together dish.
Which came to the scoring. Bree and Jessica received the highest overall score out of the two semi finals. But I suspect this was so they could give the twins a respectable score from the judges. They scored seven from each. Therefore to make it fair the SA mums to show the difference in standard they received one or two more points each from them. Their first course of Mushroom Wontons and Prawns with Hot and Sour Soup did receive rave reviews from the judges. But Karen Martini did think it was just a tad too much chilli.
Their main was Smoked Duck with Seared Scallops and Asian Greens. They struggled with it. The duck breast did not cook in the smoker aka the bamboo steamer and Bree had to hastily pan fry them and shove them in the oven. I hope she had a pan at the bottom of the oven as with all that fat dripping it was going to be a bitch to clean.
It did not look appetising on the plate as they ran out of time. The actual duck was complimented, but Manu was complaining about the lack of sauce. “Don’t they know how to meet my demands yet” he whined to the other judges. OK I am paraphrasing. And none of them even glanced at the Asian Greens.
Helena and Vikki’s main was Quail with Dolmades and Avgolemono Sauce. There was a bit of smoke and mirrors with their plating up. The clock had a minute on the clock but it looked like they only had the sauce and Dolmades on the plate like they could get the quail balanced on the plate in 60 seconds. In real life this could not occur.
The judges were positive about the dish with Guy Grossi complaining about the toughness of the vine leaves. However Chloe and Kelly thought the quail was over done. The twins entree of Scampi Ceviche with Carrot Puree and Watercress Salad was criticised because of the puree. The judges thought it should not have been on the plate as it overpowered the ceviche.
It was interesting the girls had enough prep time to do two sets of scampi. Helena had put the first lot too early in the lemon juice and therefore over cooked it.
Vikki and Helena had to hope for a huge stuff up from the SA mums with their dessert of Peach and Apricot Tarte Tartin with Cinnamon Ice Cream. It did not occur. Karen Martni told the girls it was one of the best dishes she had ever eaten on My Kitchen Rules and even Kelly gave an approving yum.
It was interesting the highlights of the meal were done by Jessica, the dessert and the mushroom wontons. Hopefully Bree realised this and thanked her.
