The Voice Australia – Series Three Kicks Off – The New Coaches Are Great, But Oh So Much Filler

The new series kicked of with  the new coaches Kylie and joining Ricky Martin and Joel Madden. Ricky quickly realised that not being one of the shiny new Coaches meant he would find it more difficult to get the contestants on his team. Joel Madden gleefully tells him everybody wants to be the new guy and this is what it was like for him last year.

After the four “superstar” coaches  singing Hall Of Fame by The Script it was down to the blind auditions or as they are better know the turning chairs part of The Voice. In 90 minutes there were very few audition but the good new is there was only one sob story.

Here are the contestants:

Kat Jade 23 year old from South Australia – Wrecking Ball

Kat does You Tube videos and wears pink cat ears on her head and she turned up to the auditions with her fiance and her ?gay best friend Rhyan. She did a lovely version of Miley Cyrus’s version of Wrecking Ball. Kylie was the first to hit the button and then Joel did shortly afterwards. Obviously she was thrilled and was snorting when she laughed. Joel tried to sell himself by telling her she has a really unique voice. She ended going with Kylie.Rhyan came out and got his chest signed by Kylie and she had to tell him to calm down.

Mat Verevis 23 year old from Qld but now living in Sydney – New York State Of Mind.

Mat studied Music Theatre and made a brave move of playing the piano and singing Billy Joel’s New York State Of Mind. The judges must of been trying to work out how old the person was who was audition and must have got a very pleasant shock when they turned around and saw a good looking young male. In the end they all turned around and Mat went with Will.

Frank Lakoudis 22 years old from NSW – Immigrant Song.

The rock version of Goyte seems to have a bit of a mad girlfriend. Tiana said if he win $1 million she will give him a child. So she is only in it for the money? Joel, Kylie and Ricky all buzzed in after his first raw screech. Ricky who does not appear to be selling himself as well as last year did not have a hope in getting him and it was no surprise that he was going to go with Joel.

Anja Nissen from NSW – Vanishing

She was the first one with a sob story about her grandparents house was destroyed in a bush fire and when they came to stay at her house she helped ease the pain by singing to them. Well that is how they were trying to link Anja to her grandparents story. She has one of the “big notes win votes” voices. Ricky turned first then all the other buzzed in and they gave her a standing ovation. Will said he “was not expecting that when I turned around”. He added “I think if you were on my team you would be on my team”. She ended up picking but they best be some OH&S policies put around the pairing as Will is a well know ladies man.

Eddie Brown 55 from Sydney sang and did not get selected as did Greg Byrne who also played the guitar.

Lionel Cole 45 years old NSW  – Unforgettable.

For someone who does not want to be known as Nat King Cole’s nephew he mentioned it a lot, as he did his cousin Natalie Cole and he also sang one of Nat’s iconic songs. But let’s give the poor guy a leave pass as he was probably told to do all that by the producers. Because of this I thought I was going to hate him but he was quite entertaining, likeable and gave great TV.

His other claim to fame was the Black Eyed Peas (Will.I.Am’s band) opened for Lionel band back in the day. Once Will had been prompted to ask about it…”I know you from somewhere” Lionel told him the connection saying “you got famous, we broke up!” Joel, Kylie and Ricky buzzed in and he went with Ricky even after Kylie sat down with him on stage. However no one asked him why he was wearing a kilt, tie and jacket. The stylist when he hits the battle rounds are going to have to make a change.

Rosemaree Dinaro  a  21 year old from NSW – Can’t Fight The Moonlight

Rosemaree had not told her father she was auditioning as he was her biggest fan and biggest critic. However her father was in the audience after being told by his mother that she had won tickets. Nerves obviously hurt her voice as she was pitchy. The judges had no intention of turning around and only Kylie was the coach pretending she might be considering buzzing in.

Carlos Velazquez aka C Major – Crazy In Love

Carlos has been producing for six years but he wants his time to shine. It was a great audition and the coaches broke out into   dance fest. For the record Ricky has the most rhythm. He had his pick from all the  four coaches. Ricky who had been struggling to get people on his team thought “I’ve got this” as he found out he was from Puerto Rico and was bonding with him in Spanish. Then Will started speaking the language as did Kylie. At least she got something out of having dated that spanish model for a few years. He did end up picking Ricky but it was a very amusing moment.

Personally I don’t think we have seen the winner yet, but who did you like from the auditions? What are your thoughts on the coaches? I am loving them all particularly Will and Joel and really is anyone missing Seal?

The Voice Australia on NINE Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday at 7.30pm.

Surely Talking Heads’ “Burning Down The House ” should have been the go to choice for Anja and her sob story.

I was surprised that Lionel Cole’s connection to a famous uncle & cousin was not revealed to the judges. While it was interesting and gave the reason why he was singing Unforgettable, the story didn’t seem complete without the judges hearing about it after he sang. I thought that was strange. Only the fact that he knew was revealed.

Jec – Good point. I suspect it was edited out.

4 Sandii { 05.05.14 at 2:49 pm }

RR do you think by the lack of commenters here, not many people are that interested in the Voice this time around. It will be interesting to see how many people comment on MC tonight.

5 Reality Raver { 05.05.14 at 2:59 pm }

Sandii – I think cooking shows are definitely more popular on this blog then the reality talent shows. This has traditionally been the case. But now that Annajjj is doing the House Rules Recaps I am going to try and increase my coverage of The Voice. I will see if I get any traction.

6 Ma Chook { 05.05.14 at 5:35 pm }

In a bit of a quandry tonight. I unable to watch/record three shows at once. As the Voice episodes for the week are being re-run next Saturday night, I will hang on with House Rules and Masterchef. Annajjj love your wit and take on HR. It’s not really lighting my fire at the moment, but I will try to see it through. contestants are either ‘vanilla’ or f—k wits!!!

Disappointing start.

I will watch the voice if they have some good singers. I missed last nights but will look out for catch ups.
