Guest Post: House Rules – The Teams Return Home

Annajjj’s recap again is hilarious. Over to Annajjj:

After the epic two hour episodes we’ve had recently tonight feels like it only just got started before it ends. Teams travel home to fix up their most hated rooms and surprisingly only two zones were the ones that Snow Whites worked on.

The ‘rules’ are revealed and they are:
Choose one zone – no surprises there
Impress with a unique vision
Reflect your style
$5K for the budgets. Finally!
24 hours to complete and also the stupid final rule which isn’t on here..
Teams have to stay together at all times

Unsurprisingly Mads and Lloyd cannot wait to tear off their potato sack feature ceiling. Their zone is the bedroom, WIR and deck. Adz and Lisa also want to get rid of Brooke and Grant in the guest bedroom. They are removing the awful ‘pops of colour’ wallpaper as well as fixing up their laundry.

The Cappers are redoing their bedroom and WIR, so Gapper will probably lose his only drawer, and Team Bomb are fixing up the kitchen, dining and Kaitlin’s room except really just the kitchen and dining. Ryandy can’t work out which zone to tackle and spend two hours debating. C’mon gice, surely this should have been decided on the trip home.

Team Bomb need to sort out the awful splashback and, since removing it will wreck the wall, they decide to tile over it. There is a special product for priming the glass which Bomber tells us takes a very long time to dry and in the same breath says he hopes it will dry quickly as they haven’t got much time.

Carole’s chandelier has nasty pink bits so they will have to go shopping again tomorrow. Note that Carole gets no grief for this error unlike Gapper who gets murdered later in the episode for his mistake.

Out at the shops Bomber is pointing out tile choices but Mel is in a very bad mood and just hates everything including Bomber. Finally she agrees to a bright blue pattern and tells us it is very junk shop chic. No it’s not.

Ryandy are off on a four hour round trip to buy furniture and Mads and Lloyd are out buying plants. The Cappers are going quite well at this stage. Their enormous Balinese bed-head is being fitted into place. Its a doorway to heaven Carole says and is so delighted by this phrase she repeats it several times. It looks impressive but personally I don’t like the idea of having a doorway at the top of my head when I’m sleeping.

Out in Gosford, or where ever they ended up, Candy has given up making any shopping decisions. Ryan refuses to listen to her on anything anyway and is choosing just stuff he likes including a giant arty framed poster. He carefully loads it onto the back of the truck where Candy gives it a quick sneaky thump and successfully cracks it.

Team Bomb are upcycling (drink!) some wormy old pieces of wood to make display shelves for more of their crap. Obviously the pressure is getting to Mel and she is feeling stroppy. I can’t blame her but I’m fast losing the Mel-love.

Night time and Mads and Lloyd are busy stripping sex-and-the-city wallpaper off the WIR. In Perth Gapper has painted directly onto the glass laundry doors and the paint starts peeling off. Gapper then has to pull it all off while Carole stands watching in disgust. ‘We haven’t got time to make mistakes’ she snaps. Apparently we do have time to stand around complaining though.

Ryan gets rid of the horrible light fitting and replaces it with an equally horrible light fitting. Adam does his trademark cartoon hyuk hyuk laugh.

The following morning it looks like some of the guys have been up all night. Ryan’s eyes are practically falling out of his head as he tries to hang the wallpaper. Maddi and Lloyd are busy decorating the deck and is that a fake grass rug going down? The judges won’t like that. Reveal tomorrow.

I don’t believe for a second all this stuff gets done in 24hrs. What’s with the lounge that Ryan said ‘it is something that my mum would have’? The lounge they(he) chose was pretty much the same one his mum would have.

love the recap annajjj, I missed the start of the ep so thanks for filling me in :)

Really disliked watching Bomber and Mel boasting about their junk-yard chic splashback, like since when is a blue mosaic tile junk-yard or chic?? Losing the Mel-love here too, they seem to be getting a bit snobby…

I missed why Maddi and Lloyd had to paint their deck ceiling and the faux-drama about spending all their budget on it?

I think it’s really funny that they are standing in their own houses saying that they don’t want to go home.

Definitely thought they would think about it on the plane, but then again Ryan and Candy didn’t have to go on a plane.

Also assuming there were a few days between things happening what is to stop them going to a shop and buying stuff before the 24hours starts.

Assuming if you lived in the Tropical North, you would know that you get lots of bugs, esp when using big lights at night. Why didn’t they at least invest in a bug zapper?

Great Recap as usual. Not sure of the roadmap where all the other teams get bumped off before for the Gold Logie Best in Show viewer cash grab, er viewer participation final. I can’t remember from last season. Gardens lose two teams at the same time?

Mel has no idea what junkyard chic is. I think she is just going along with Bomber who probably has no idea what it is either. There is nothing junkyard about that blue tile splashback. I’m tired of them using the term “junkyard chic” as well as “shabby chic” over and over again.
If I were a teenage girl I wouldn’t want that ugly car part glass covered junky artsy table in my bedroom as a desk. Why didn’t they just get rid of it? Guess they are being cheap instead of going out and buying a desk for her. There were no stipulations that they had to keep the stuff they didn’t like. I am over Mel and Bomber and hope they are eliminated.

Ryan and Candy….don’t see this as a lasting relationship but then who knows what goes on behind closed doors. She is very whiny and irritating, at least on camera.

Carole and Russell dealing w/ pink and Russell saying how much he hates pink and yet there he is wearing a pink shirt.

Another great recap thanks annajjj. Bug zapper still not enough up here in the tropics, Brady. I agree about the lounge….it was it’s twin almost. Why change it????
I must admit it would be difficult to decide between 2 zones and work out which can be done in the time limit.
M&L wanted to line roof of patio but all sorts of problems with electrics etc, Shellbot. They would have had to re do iron on the roof as well as lining and insulation.

Agree that Candy and Ryan wasted too much time, they should have known what they wanted to do beforehand. And then all that driving they did to shop, are there no shops closer? Candy seems to hate Ryan, she gets so irritated with him.
I like the Balinese doors but not sure how it will look over the bed, and Mel seems cranky and a bit snobby. Get the girl a new desk, enough of this junkyard stuff.
I would have liked the bathroom tiles replaced in Lisa and Adam’s place but I guess there wouldn’t have been enough time.

8 all happening { 06.16.14 at 11:58 am }

I agree Andrea, it would have been tempting to do THOSE tile in L&A’s place. By the time you remove the tiles, patch the wall, waterproof again and then start on new tiles, time would not allow it.

Thanks gice, appreciate the feedback. Lol Colleen: “I don’t want to go home……Doh”
Smythe that’s a good point. Can’t imagine Kaitlin will love that awful desk. Bomber should put it in his cigar lounge/pool room.

Andrea (7), Candy & Ryan would have all the furniture & hardware stores right at their doorstep in Penrith (I have family there). If they are travelling for a 4 hour round trip to get to a store they want to shop at, then don’t complain about the distance & time when there are other stores closer.
Was something said about the brand new couch being donated to charity? Surely the store that it came from would take it back in exchange for another? It hadn’t even been used!
Mel’s blue mosaic splashback reeks of desperation – it was a poor choice needing to fit the time frame and the fact the store had boxes of it in stock.
Maddi & Lloyd should have been concentrating on the bedroom and WIR. That’s where the biggest change and potential for points would be. A bug-gy painted outdoor area would not be impressive, though I did like that swinging chair.
So who do people think has the zone that the judges don’t like and that it’s no improvement on before? I think it’s Bomber & Mel.

11 Shellbot { 06.16.14 at 1:07 pm }

Would be amusing if it’s Ryan and Candy seeing as they are replacing things with very similar items and in the past their paint work is no better than Adam and Lisa’s.

Ryan does seem to be annoying to shop with, he doesn’t really listen to anyone and just seems to get his way as he whirlwinds through the store :p

Definitely agree that M&L should be concentrating on the main bedroom for more obvious ‘wow’ factor, it looked so bad before it would be easy to really earn points for making it look normal and therefore so much better haha

In the previews for these current episodes they have shown what part of M&L and Candy and Ryan’s updated rooms look like. C&R’s new family room looks like a colour explosion (ugh to the rug)! M&L have picked a difficult zone in terms of trying to get something decent done on the deck to make an impact. Regardless, I still think that B&M are the ones to go tonight. I commented on another thread about their tiles and agree with you all.. they are not ‘junkyard chic’. They don’t even know what ‘junkyard chic’ is.. it just becomes whatever crap they like!

B&M do like the car part dining table but don’t like the size so possibly they have to move it to somewhere else within the zone they are re-doing to be able to keep it. Bomber has said many times he wants it.

I would say Candy and Ryan wanted to go to the city suburbs to go furniture shopping. Probably Alexandria where you have more higher end/’trendy’ furniture options. I live in an area where there have been lots of new housing and we have tonnes of furniture shops, etc but they are all so run of the mill it’s boring. I go to the inner west when I want to look at furniture so can understand their trip. It looks like they went to Matt Blatt which is understandable with their budget (still, wouldn’t get much for 5k) as they wouldn’t have even been able to buy a chair in some stores for that much! They should have hit the vintage/retro stores.. although I am glad they didn’t in a way as too many people would find out about them ;p

p.s I think fake grass would look awesome on M&L’s deck if they could do it right. It’s a shame the piece they have isn’t a bit bigger.

13 all happening { 06.16.14 at 2:58 pm }

I think the fake grass was there after the original make over. It was for the dog house.

14 Eliza { 06.16.14 at 3:06 pm }

Yeah it was already there, for the dog! It can look really cool though as an outdoor rug and something to sit on. Annajjj made the comment that the judges won’t like it, but I think it depends on how it is used.

15 Gabby { 06.16.14 at 3:30 pm }

Maybe it could be Katlyns room. From what I can see they have only put the table in there for use as a desk. They said they weren’t going to do much to her room.
I am so over Ryan getting his way all the time. Maybe that is why Candy is like she is, she never gets a say. He is definitely the boss in that relationship.

16 Eliza { 06.16.14 at 3:37 pm }

Yep, I think it will be Kaitlin’s room where they make the comment about not much being done.

Sorry.. I keep commenting so much.. I need to focus on what I am meant to be doing!

17 all happening { 06.16.14 at 3:54 pm }

Candy is a nagging pain. She will not listen to anything Ryan says. I don’t blame him for ignoring her. He was perfectly right in saying that they not do the laundry zone. There was too much work to do in that zone for a 24 hour turn round. She just wouldn’t listen. I said earlier she is a spoilt brat….has been all series. Ryan is a tradesman so has an idea on what is involved in each zone.

18 Gidgitvonlarue { 06.16.14 at 4:07 pm }

I could not agree more re previous 2 hours – last night felt like 15 minutes long!!

19 Gidgitvonlarue { 06.16.14 at 4:22 pm }

The horrible fake grass is for their damn dog. F*ck the dog – the dog isn’t going to pay off your mortgage! Shove the dog in a kennel until judging then by all means let the damn thing shit all over your house – who cares.

20 daisy { 06.16.14 at 4:44 pm }

Just popped in to read “fake grass”. Mmmm classy.

Dog nappy Gidget.

21 kes { 06.16.14 at 5:56 pm }

Lol Gidget……Bomber and Mel has finally given me the shits, enough of that stupid word.Did anyone notice all the bloody junk in the corner of the back yard! trash city. Hate to be the neighbor cos I get that feeling that Bombastic bomber collects crap from everywhere and brings it home cos “I will use this one day” and never does, had an ex husband like this and it is more than frustrating. I hope they go tonight after showing their true colors in the last few eps.

22 Eliza { 06.17.14 at 12:43 am }

Go fake grass! You are awesome!

LOL @Gidgit…

23 Smythe { 06.17.14 at 2:07 am }

I think lots of that garbage in Bomber’s and Mel’s backyard was from the previous owners. I remember seeing that in one of the before they purchased photos online. Either he liked keeping that stuff around for future upcycling (LOL) or they just kept it around to make the house look shabbier and junkier for a better chance to be selected for HR and to fit in w/ their junk shop/shabby chic concept. :-)
