Masterchef Australia – The Choc Top Pressure Test

Tracey did play her pin and Renae was sent down in Masterchef Kitchen with Sarah and Emelia making Nick Galumbo Choc Tops. Her reasoning was she did not know what lies ahead. However since she admitted she had been awake since 3.00am it was probably best she did not cook.

The contestants had to make the whole choc top including the cone and the soft serve ice cream. They had two hours to make all the components but assembled the dessert just before presentation.  Emelia was like a machine, efficient and focussed.  Gary sauntered over with Nick to praise her organisation and her clean bench however he then decided to go for the mind f**k telling her it can go pear shaped at any moment.

Sarah on the other hand was not together. She over blended the almonds in the thermomix so they turned into an almond paste. She must have had no more almonds as she then tried to dry them out of the oven.

Renae is not stupid she made sure she analysed the caramel soft serve taste realising that was the crucial element. She knew it had to be dark. Renae was the last to add the cream and it looked like she had stuffed it as smoke started billowing from the caramel and then it was boiling over. But she remained calm throughout.

Sarah was constantly behind and when it looked like Sarah was not going to get her cones done Gary turned into her own personal cheers squad at her bench.

Renae was the first to plate up after the two hour time frame had finished. Gary said it was pretty good. Nick Palumbo said that she nailed the salted caramel flavour and he was very impressed with the soft serve. I noted that they at most off their individual cones.

Sarah was next and her ice cream was not as dark. George said the biggest mistake was the salty caramel ice cream and that it was really just salty milk. Gary said “You have to look at the positives….” and then proceeded to highlight the other components but eventually had to come back to the elephant in the room which was her ice cream. He looked a tad downcast but did perk up again when he realised Emelia had made the same mistake. He gushed “I expected it to  be perfect but the sugar is not bitter enough, it is exactly the same as Sarah’s just a little saltier.” However Nick said the cone was the best of them.

Throughout all the judging Matt Preston just sat up the end of the table making orgasmic looking facial expressions saying nothing as he munched through four ice cream cones.

Renae was obviously safe. In the end it was Sarah eliminated for a second time as her cone was not as good Emelia’s. It was the correct decision.

Laura telling the professional chef not to overcook the quail…priceless. She is young, though, and probably a bit naive. Thinking that the praise by the Stooges and the fact that she won an ammunity pin (which she shouldn’t have won) have gone to her head. Making comments about his salad and then the chef asking how it should be served. It actually seemed as if she was flirting with him in a giggling, school-girlish way.

Faux blind tasting again, too, and bad acting by Stooges that they couldn’t tell who cooked what. Stating how perfect the quail dish was and then giving it two 8s equal to two of Amy’s scores. More fake drama in an attempt keep the audience on edge to the last minute as scores are revealed.

I will try again.
I love how the judges said they cooked the lobsters perfectly. But most time the lobsters were raw and they have to cook them again. That is not good technique.

Also if the guest judge didn’t help Amy with the plating, her plating is a big fail.

Tamara, I reckon having ‘help’ from the gallery is actually a disadvantage. Trying to concentrate on what you are doing with people yelling instructions is really hard. I think that is why Emelia does well, because she is able to block it out, focus on her plan. Maybe the others don’t try to give her help because she generally ignores them, whereas Sarah was fluttering around trying to listen and obey everyone.
