Masterchef Australia – The Immunity Challenge And Amy Chokes

On Sunday it looked like Amy could be a contender but tonight was another story all together. She managed to beat Ben and Laura in the beef identification puzzle to cook in the final immunity challenge against John Lawson. He picked the bitter ingredients over sweet and then Amy just went blank. OK that is being harsh she grabbed a lobster then went blank.

Meanwhile Laura looked like she had a crush on John asking him if his salad was going to be hot or cold, then telling him she would like to taste it. He sounded slightly irritated.

Tracy even though she was not even competing continues to look stressed and tired.

Amy meanwhile was undercooking a lobster that she had no idea what do with. Also Jamie’s narration outlining all her mistakes was a tad irritating it is not like he has even come close to cooking in an immunity challenge.

She plated up too much lobster and John came around and said less is more. And surely the judges were lying when they said they could not tell whose dish it was when they were presented.

John had plated up an appetising Pan Fried Quail with Braised Raddichio with fried Pancetta and Citrus Dressing.

Amy put up poached lobster with a salad, mayonaisse with lobster mustard in it, along with a citrus dressing.

Gary gave Amy an 8, Matt and George were not quite as generous and gave a 7. Which gave her a total of 22 out of 30.

John Lawson was given an 8 out of 10 by George and Matt and a nine by Gary. It was an easy and unsurprising win.

Poor Shaun Presland. His appearances on the show seem cursed.

Benji, Green didn’t cop flack for using pre-made rice paper in the same way the yellow team didn’t get slugged for having premade tortillas during the Vic Markets challenge.

Littlepetal #98, there was also Hoisin sauce in there too.

TV WEEK for this week gives away that one of the 4 up for elimination tonight survives and cooks next week in “Heston Week”.
I suspect that Renae or even Tracy will get the bullet tonight – how will Tracy go with her burnt hand from the Asian challenge?
Also,I am starting to if not like Jamie, then at least to not hate him as much as I previously did.

I’d been thinking about this since after the episode but wasn’t sure how to articulate it until I saw someone’s comment earlier. During the broadcast, I thought the producer’s view on the decorations of the stalls seemed racially insensitive. Not that they are racist but they were far off from people wearing Chinese silk dresses and conical straw hats. I bet if they had an African-American soul food market stall, the wouldn’t have chicken and watermelon motifs stuck all over their stands.

However, one other commentor said it best. The producers have a very simplistic, narrow, stereotypical view of Asians. I bet if it was a Jamaican stall, there would be a steel drum somewhere.

The contestant’s knowledge of Asian cuisine is shocking. I think Blue and Red were the only ones that had something that came close to passing off as Asian. Tuna tataki was weird but at least the papaya salad looked on the money. I don’t know any Chinese person who would mince up perfectly fine red glazed char siu BBQ Pork and make a meatball out of it to put into a soup. The Vietnamese tacos were just sad.

Ha Ha! Cracked the spam code and my trouble with comments. Spam filter hates a five letter word, starting with g, that rhymes with best that describes a welcome visitor.

Continuing on with the Viet tacos, these “tacos” were the reason I thought the welcome visiting chefs had checked out mentally as what self-respecting Vietnamese chef would allow food like that to be sold as Vietnamese.

Oh, also this going back to the whole Asian motif thing:

They usually showed some shots of people voting in previous seasons so would have missed this were it not for the photo. Also, might the position of blue’s voting thing not account for their very high vote?

Did the blue team make their own char siu pork?

Even sadder that the blue team think their doup was good and Gary said the pork was mice. Minced char siu pork in hot and sour soup, anyone?

Carole @97 The only movie I can think of is Catherine Zeta Jones No Reservations.

Simon @104. MC Aus has never in any incarnation featured West Indian/Caribbean cuisine. The steel drums would probably break Ch10s budget.

Is this an elite clique or something? Everything I post is deleted. Thanks. I won’t intrude any further.

Simone, deleted or just didn’t make it past the spam filter (which is the case if the post doesn’t show up after you submit it). Had trouble getting past the spam filter this time around too.

Maz, hehe true. I guess they’d pushing their multicultural boundaries with just those four Asian cuisines as it is. Though, the contestants have done jerk chicken this year, so that’s something.

The spam filter doesn’t play favourites, Simone. Happens to all of us from time to time. If you email RR via the “Contact” option in the top l/h corner and let her know your stuff’s in the spam folder, it can be fished out. It’s not lost.

Doing a forced refresh on the page you commented on might help if the comment has “disappeared”, too.

That sounds like a lot of effort for a comment that wasn’t particularly clever or original, Dave :)

If Kylie Kwong WASN’T there Amy would STILL be standing there like a stunned mullet looking at a huge whole raw lobster on her bench. Talk about a melt down. Why pick the friggin lobster when you have so much to choose from when you have no idea what to do with it??

@Benji 93
I agree with your comments about Renae! Shao Mai is Chinese? Isn’t he a Japanese chef?

Laura’s hair in the food is disgusting – Laura is only on this show because she is being used as a ‘cutesy’ gimmick.

About the Japanese Cuisine, I’m Japanese and I return to Japan frequently for work/holiday and they barely even managed to scrap anything together that appeared remotely like Japanese ‘street food’ to me.
