So You Think You Can Dance Australia – The Top Four
I believe I am fairly fluent in WTF but most of the time tonight I had no idea what guest judge and choreographer Tyce Diorio was on about. I suspect the same goes for the dancers who started just given Tyce polite smiles.
For those who have never seen him he is a choreographer and sometimes judge on the US show. Also for Broadway nuts you may have seen him in a documentary which filmed the making of the production of A Chorus Line. He manages to to portray a very good sense of self in the few scenes he is in the film. By the way when are they going to produce A Chorus Line again in Australia again. There is enough talent here, and the set is pretty low cost. Just a ballet barre and a few mirrors.
However I did love Tyce’s top four group routine, and the judges could not stop vomiting superlatives about it and Tyce.
The top four show for me is normally the best episode of the season, and tonight was no different.
Ivy and Robbie were good in the Rhumba, as Jason Coleman highlighted Robbie was doing a great job with the lifts considering he was shorter than Ivy.
Jessie’s and Phillipe’s jazz number by Adam William’s was really great and I thought Jessie really shone.
I think Tyce was also thinking that , but I am not sure what he meant when he was talking about Jessie taking it far far away?
Robbie and Phillipe’s hip hop routine was good I am still not convinced about Robbie as a bad arsed hip hop dancer.
The end of the routine was more enjoyable then the first half, yes girls you know what I am talking about.
Robbie and Jessie danced a contemporary routine choreographed by their former teacher Jacqui Howard it was based on Avatar, now me and Bonnie Lythgoe are the only two people in Australia who has not seen the movie, but clearly it cannot be better then that routine it was mesmerising. Matt Lee was so overwhelmed by his fellow Brent St alumni he wept.
Phillipe and Ivy’s routine choreographed by Ludwig was enjoyable, however Jason Coleman did not think it was Phillipe’s best performance.
The Squared Division routine for Jessie and Ivy was apparently set in 3010, I was a bit depressed that even in 1000 years time that girls still dressed as hoochies. Maybe the next feminist wave had come and gone. Hoochie or not the girls did dance it well.
I found Jessie’s solo irritating with the one pointe shoe on and I thought this made her look a bit clunky. I loved Robbie’s routine and thought it had the right balance this week of emotion and tricks.
Phillipe solo was ok but I thought he needed a bit more wow factor. Considering he is going to struggle to come above fourth place I thought a few tricks may have made him stand out a bit more from the pack.
Ivy has been consistently good throughout the competition, and her solo was no exception. However I just am not sure she will have the following to take out the prize. But then I said in a post at the start of the series that she would not make top 10, how wrong I was.
I think the title is between Jessie and Robbie. I think Robbie has the edge but it should be close.

So You Think You Can Dance – We Have Our Top Four – Woo Hoo
Were people going to vote for the dancing or the dancer’s tonight? If the Australia vote for the dancing this will mean Jess S should be in the top four based on last night’s show.
I thought the girls solo’s were much stronger than the guys. They were all still in hoochie mode as they wore underwear as costumes.
I thought Robbie’s solo was particularly disappointing (RR expects to be flamed for this comment) but it was all tricks and not a lot of dancing.
Channel Ten decided to maintain the suspense of the top four by putting Robbie and Jessie through first. Ivy was the second girl through, I thought Robbie and Jessie did not look real thrilled by that.
Great news that Phillipe got through to the top four, and Nick was eliminated. Was the blonde girl in the audience they flashed to his fiance? I think it was as she had a diamond ring on the appropriate finger. Though she won’t be too thrilled that he did not really thank her in his speech. However he gave God a big thanks – but why does he presume God is a male?
Anyway the right top four occurred. Next weeks episode is going to pop as did that fantastic routine the Sydney Dance Company did tonight.

Matt Lee Turned Down Role On So You Think You Can Dance Ukraine
(Image: Sunday Telegraph)
Here is the So You Think You Can Dance Australia cast at the Logies nomination breakfast at The Ivy in Sydney. Canny readers will realise that it is an unusual thing for Matt Lee to be without his usual headwear. I don’t get why he does not go sans hats on the show.
Anyway I do get why he is not being a judge on So You Think You Can Dance Ukraine, if a vignette in the Sunday Telegraph (hard copy only) is true. It stated that Matt Lee had turned down a part on the show, because he was over committed here. But it did say that choreographer Adam Williams might take up the role. I will be surprised if it is true, as he they would need an interpreter, and I am not sure that would be great TV.
UPDATE: Matt Lee confirmed for me on Twitter that he did turn it down, but only because of his Mary Poppins commitments.

So You Think You Can Dance – A Bit Of A Shock
The way people were tweeting fear and loathing on twitter tonight made me think either Jesse H or Robbie had been eliminated. I was not surprised by the bottom four, Carly, Jess, Keiran and Phillipe.
I know people thought Jess was going to go again, but it was time for Carly’s to walk the plank. I was disappointed that Keiran got flicked, but I don’t think it will hinder his career.
Phillipe may get to go top having drawn Jessie next week, but it will be tough as Nick and Robbie have big fan bases.
The other couples are Jess and Robbie, and Ivy and Nick.
I loved Bonnie Lythoges outfit tonight. I thought keeping her boobs fully covered made her look funky and younger. However I cannot even speak about the orange atrocity that Jason Coleman was wearing.

So You Think You Can Dance – The Top 8
I cannot believe that SYTYCDA get a choreographer of the profile and talent of Rafael Bonacela from the Sydney Dance Company, and then give him Carly and Phillipe. I now know the show is NOT rigged. Christ he will never come back. The look on his face at the end of the routine said it all.
This routine just highlighted Carly’s inadequacies as a dancer, and there just did not appear to be any emotional between the pair. I know the judges were positive about the routine, but they were not gushing.
Just a few other thoughts before getting into the recap:
- Bonnie Lythgoe has a boyfriend, and he is younger. Way to go girl, she is a fit looking woman. Maybe Phillipe is looking or a mother figure and they are getting it on. I would pay that. [UPDATE: @LandyK on twitter said Bonnie is seeing a set designer called Chris, someone she has known for 19 years - ok so Phillipe is still single];
- What ever Jess S gave up for Lent must have worked, as she was not back in the show due to Jessica leaving. An article in the paper suggested Jessica wanted to stay but the show told her they could not be legally responsible. Also her injury had the potential for it to become a liability to her partner.
- Natalie Bassingthwaite who has looked lovely all season tonight looked like a decoration you put on top of your christmas tree. They needed to take a 1/2 metre of the grey taffeta off the bottom.
Also I find it vaguely disturbing that I am agreeing a lot with Matt Lee this season. Last year I wrote about him:
I would like him[Matt Lee] to find his judging niche ie. what his role is on the panel. He should provide a point of comparison between the routines or genres, or dancers technical strengths and weaknesses for the layperson, which brings me to my next point.
Now Matt has found his judging chutzpah he is the standout judge this season. By the way I am not having a meglomaniac moment, and don’t think Matt’s more assertive judging persona has anything to do with my criticism or suggestions on this blog.
Nick and Jessie H – Hip Hop Jesse Rasmussan- Ne-Yo
A cute routine kind of pop hip hop. I thought Jessie outdanced Nick. Even if she does not win the competition she has a great career ahead of her. The consensus of the judges was that it was a good routine, but I nearly fell of my chair in shock when Bonnie told Nick he needed more sharpness.
Matt Lee thought Jessie needed to watch her face as it gets a little bit cheesy.
Jess S and Keiran – Foxtrot – Trent & Gordana – Michael Buble – Cry Me A River
Speaking of peoples faces Keiran looks a bit like the Michael Buble? Anyway I thought Keiran had quite a strange expression throughout, but I did enjoy the routine.
Robbie and Ivy – Andrew Hallsworth – Cabaret – Mein Herr
Well if Robbie’s back was still injured the V move on the chair would have killed it. I thought this routine rocked, and thought the criticism of Robbie appearing like a boy dancing beside Ivy as bollocks. I thought the who purpose of his costume and persona was to come across as a guy out of his depth with this girl.
Bonnie thought the routine was a touch under. WTF she sits through shite routines for most of the freaking season, and then decides THIS is the routine she is going to nit pick.
Jessie H and Nick – Jason Gilkison – Cha Cha – Orient Expressions – Istanbul 1:26am
I thought my fag hag days were over but I am a little in love with Jason Gilkison. Has anyone ever been eliminated on his routines? Even thought I don’t think Jessie nailed the cha cha movements completely in some points I loved her and Nick in this routine.
Matt Lee thought the hip action from Jessie was lacking for a cha cha. Also Jason said there has been only other person in SYTYCA history that had never put a foot, wrong and you are on the same path. I figure he was talking about Jack Chambers.
Jess and Kieran – Contemporary – Larissa McGowan – Propellerheads – Velvet Pants
I really loved this routine. Maybe the thing that irritated the viewers about Jess was her hair flying everywhere all the time, with it back and not being a distraction personally I think this helped.
Jason said it was very pure contemporary, and gave them a few technical criticisms. I hope we see more of this choreographer before the end of the season.
Phillipe and Carly – Jazz – The Square Division
Now I know The Square Division can be a bit up and down on their routines, but I really liked this Ken and Barbie dance. In fact I preferred Phillipe and Carly in this then the Rafael Bonachello routine they did earlier.
Robbie and Ivy – Jason Bird & Katie Cesaro
A well danced but kind of a simple hip hop routine, not one of the highlights of the night. Matt Lee told Robbie to watch the mouth and for Ivy to get more down and dirty. And yes as sharp eyed readers have pointed out Jason Bird was in Scandal Us that reality TV band formed out of the second season of Popstars.
Bottom two girls – Carly and Jess S
Bottom two guys – Keiran and Phillipe

Hot Rumour On SYTYCD Australia – Jessica P Out Injured, Jess S Back In
If rumours are correct on Twitter it would appear ballroom dancer Jessica P has pulled out of So You Think You Can Dance Australia because of injury, and this means the most recent eliminated girl, Jess S is back in.
We all saw ballroom dancer Jessica struggling last week with her back, however she must be bitterly disappointed as she did a have a big fan base.
Anyway Jess S should go and buy a lottery ticket as it is her lucky day. I presume this means she will again be dancing with Keiran this week.
UPDATE: It is now official Jessica P is out, and Jess S is back in. Thanks Joysant.

So You Think You Can Dance – And Now There Are Eight
There was no big surprises in the bottom two. It was a no brainer that the injured Jessica P, would be there, and I think it has been shown week after week, that Jess S has not been connecting to the voters.
However I was surprised that Jess S went ahead of Jessica P this week, whose dancing was the worst of the lot last night. It must have been frustrating for her as she got some good reviews last night. Matt Lee gushed at her and said he would work with her anytime.
I was a bit surprised at Keiran being in the bottom two ahead of Nick. Have we got another Hillsong scandal brewing?
Matt’s solo was ordinary, and really does not have the body to dance shirtless. It was his time to go, however he probably wasn’t happy about the TV Week this week as this would not have help garner him votes.
The new partners next week are:
- Phillipe and Carly;
- Nick and Jessie;
- Robbie and Ivy; and
- Keiran and Jessica.

So You Think You Can Dance – The Top Ten – The Great, Good, and The Ordinary
Now this is when it gets interesting on SYTYCD Australia, as this is the week we find out who has been carrying whom for the last few weeks. There were some seriously good routines, which may even get me to pick up the phone and vote for once.
Matt and Carly - Jazz- Cameron Mitchell – Orianthi According to you
Does anyone else think Cameron Mitchell looks like a younger John Michael Howson? Carly needed to harden the fuck up all that crying is probably is going to cost her votes. Carly out danced Matt in this routine. I thought he was particularly non charismatic tonight. But over all I thought the lift was good and strong.
The judges loved it. Matt Lee thought that they had both been previously been outdanced by their other partners, so they were able to shine tonight. I am not sure if the subtext was your both ordinary dancers, so when you dance together you are not ordinary.
Robbie and Jessie – Hip Hop – Jason Bird and Katie Cesaro, Radiohead
I don’t like hip hop that much, but I loved this. This pair were mesmerising in this piece. Bonnie Lythgoe was weepy (rolls eyes) she was so emotionally engaged with the routine.
Matt Lee said they dance with the most maturity, considering they are the youngest in the competition.
I think the judging panel just had a simultaneous orgasm watching it.
Jessica and Nick – Paul Malak – Contemporary – 30 seconds to Mars – Kings & Queens
Jessica was having some back and pelvis problems, so this elicited the usual “this is the life of the dancer” comment from Jason Coleman.
Jessica did seem little gingerly in her attack of the routine, and one of their lifts was botched. I am not sure they should tell us about dancer’s injuries, as I think this will not help her with the votes. Also it put me on notice that she was likely to stuff up.
Matt thought the injury had hindered the routine. Jason Gilkison thought Nick was a lumpy partner.
Keiran and Jess – Samba – Gossip “Pop Goes The World”
I thought Jess popped in this routine. However the pouty lips got a bit annoying at some stage. I thought she also made Kieran look sexy and masculine.
Jason Gilkison loved Jess, however Jason Coleman thought Jess was under. However he liked Kieran in the routine.
Ivy and Phillipe – Contemporary – Sher Manu – Counting Crows
They keep on saving the costume allowance with Phillipe, again he is shirtless. He is officially the Dimitri of this competition. And gosh the whole routine was hot. Helped that they are probably the two most attractive dancers in the competition. Phillipe could be a surprise top four if he gets lucky with choreography and partners.
Again the whole judging panel had a simultaneous orgasm and gushed about the routine.
Matt and Carly – Hip Hop – Supple – Chelley I Took The Night
I really liked this routine which was apparently vogueing, which is back in fashion. I did think at times Carly looked a bit like a gymnast, rather then a dancer. But overall Carly danced it well except she does dance with her mouth open.
I agree with Jason G I think it start strong and faded in the middle a bit.
Jason C thought it was not vogueing but more jazz.
Robbie and Jessie – Sarah Boulter – Contemporary – The Strokes
Now I thought this triumvirate were going to produce something akin to finding the holy grail. But to me they didn’t. I absolutely hated the costumes and thought it detracted from the routine. I liked the routine but it did not have the emotional impact on me like their first one did.
But maybe I did not “get it” as Jason Coleman kind of hinted that the lay person at home may not.
Nick and Jessica – Quick step – Leeanne Bampton – Gin Wigmore – Under My Skin
Again this was stilted, I think Nick should have been the one to go last week and Heath stayed in. He was underwhelming.
Jason Gilkison thought it was a pretty good job, but Jason C did not think they used the music, and he wanted Jessica to be better in the routine.
I think this pair will be walking the plank tomorrow night.
Keiran and Jess – Hip Hop – Juliette Verne – Alicia Keys Put It in A Love Song
I wan’t quite convinced by Keiran’s pelvic thrusts, and I thought Jess overworked her face, but she danced it really well.
Jason Coleman loved Jess in the routine, and thought Keiran was not great. Which was basically what all the others thought.
Phillipe and Ivy – Jazz – Project Moda – The Pointer Sisters – Neutron Dance
I don’t think I am a fan of Project Moda, for one brilliant routine, they do about four mediocre ones. I thought Phillipe shone more in this routine than Ivy. I thought he has more natural facial expressions. WhereasI thought Ivy was too bubbly. Yes, yes I realise the story of the routine was they were the life of the party, but it was just too manic.
Jason G thought the routine was quite light. Jason C said it did not grab him. I think he was underwhelmed by the choreography rather then the dancing.
I think Jessica and Nick will be eliminated tomorrow night. The other couples in the bottom three will be Matt and Carly, and Keiran and Jess.

So You Think You Can Dance Australia – Apparently Matt Has Attitude

Well that is what this week’s edition of TV Week is saying.
In an article written about a photo shoot at Luna Park with the dancers, by the sounds of it the TV Week staffers were not too impressed by Matt’s attitude.
The article said:
While the majority of the dancers were all smiles, despite the 6am call time for our shoot, one of the reality stars was in serious need of a reality check.
Matt, the supposed cheeky chappie of the bunch, shocked TV WEEK staffers with his four-letter outburst when we asked him to get his hair and make-up done – then later, he kicked up a stink about having to carry his own bag.
As several of his fellow dancers told us, however, this behaviour was no one-off.
“I don’t know who he thinks he is,” one of the contestants tells TV WEEK. “He’s a dancer, not some big celebrity.”
“He’s the one contestant with an attitude,” seconds another. “None of us want to tick him off because he just blows up and we don’t need that in our life. We don’t want that [negative] energy to ruin our day.”
“People are definitely starting to show their true colours now,” weighs in a third. “I stay away from certain personalities, because I just can’t deal with them.”
Also the article goes on to say the rumours are not true that there is a budding romance between Keiran and Carly.
The article goes onto talk about how Jess S has had issues with her two partners, Doug and Nick, as they have been married and engaged.
The article says:
After having been paired with two men – Doug and Nick - who are either married or engaged, Jess S admits she often felt that her partners put a barrier up.
“Because they both have significant others, it’s like there’s a wall there that I have to try and break through, ” she reveals. “I can’t touch them the way I want to because they have these boundaries. It’s much easier to get that connection with a gay guy, as they don’t care.”
“Nick is a great partner, but we’re very different because he’s religious and quite conservative,” she continues. “I’ve never really had an open conversation with him; I just can’t get through to him the way I want to.”
