MasterChef Australia – Why Is George Colambaris So Freaking Sensitive?

george the love god

OK George Calombaris so MasterChef Australia got beaten in the ratings by Hey Hey, however his bad mood seems to have continued throughout the week first with a rant against food bloggers in Herald Sun (blogger Eating Melbourne Blog has it in more detail)

But basically he said:

Celebrity chef George Calombaris believes online reviewers don’t have the credibility of their mainstream counterparts and bloggers are unsympathetic if there’s been a bad night on the floor, or the kitchen’s understaffed.

Critics from newspapers and magazines generally visit a noshery at least twice before writing their review.

“They monitor it and see what’s going on,” Calombaris says. “These are trained professionals. These critics know what they’re talking about. They’ve got a palate. They eat, that’s their job, that’s their living. (Bloggers) have no idea about restaurants. They’ve got no idea how they’re run.”

This is not the first time George has bagged out bloggers. At the Sydney and Melbourne Food and Wine Shows, he bitched about them having a go at him for licking his knife. (Yes that was me). But it would appear that one of the reasons he dislikes them is that he cannot control his own press through them. Because most blogs are independent there is no cosy relationship between the publicists and the journalists that can exist in some mainstream media organisations.

George also banned writer, Windsor Dobbin, this week who made a negative comment on Twitter about him. Windsor has an article online at the Brisbane Times which shows a) how sensitive George is, and b) how vitriolic he can be.

Maybe he needs to be given a guest judge role on Australian Idol to liven things up a bit.

George is a douche.
I actually kind of admire the way he confronted somebody who attacked him in the media. However this was a TWEET, 140 characters. If it had been an article it would be different. If a tweet is all it takes to rile George up like that then he should not be a media personality, his ego is clearly too fragile.

Yay ! I’m saying hi fro0m NorCal (that’s the Sonoma Valley for the specifics !). Just wanted to let RR know that last night I saw two episodes of Project Runway (the new series) plus half of what seems to be a new show Heidi does after that with the models from PR where they blab on about their part in the show… not sure how far they are into the series, I’m guessing we saw shows somewhere between 3 and 5 and the talent looks pretty good. Interestingly, for those who saw the recent intern reality show about Marie Claire interns, Nina Garcia was absent from both episodes we saw (can’t tell if she’s in or she’s out, for the whole series) and two of the “cast members” from the Marie Claire show (can’t remember the name…) were in her position on the show… Michael Kors was absent from the first show we saw, but there for the second… all round, looked like more of the same but good talent… (is on a new station here now, not Bravo…)

Am currently watching (is 9pm on a Friday night) the new series of ANTM. Thye models are all “height challenged” it seems, at least in modelling terms. I think we must be up to episode three or four as (sadly) it seems we’ve missed the makeover episode ! If anything dramatic happens, I”ll let you know ! I think the most dramatic thing I know about (but judges haven’t been on yet) is that apparently Paulina has left and sh!tbagged Tyra ! Mon Dieu !

Most exciting of all is that there is a Gossip Girl Special Event on Monday night where Tyra guest stars along with Hilary Duff ! Lordy me, we will be pulling up the caravan in time for that one !

Ciao to all in Oz…

The most hilarious thing about George’s dummy spit is that the tweet, really, wasn’t about him. It was more of a comment on the roasting that Curtis Stone received for “selling out” not that long ago. The writer was saying that George would probably also receive a roasting. This seemed to just go over George’s head.

The only part of the tweet that was offensive, if you could even call it that, was the word “pathetic”. Which is about as tame as it gets. Besides, it is kind of pathetic that George is advertising Coles when he doesn’t even buy his own fruit and vegetables from there. Would have loved to have seen him confronted on the SBS’s Insight program last week (topic was supermarkets vs. grocers, and the corruption the big groups have in the food industry overall).

Gogarnetgirl- thanks for US update. I wonder which channel Project Runway will be shown on here. As Arena has the link with Bravo. Maybe the free to airs might go for it.

Are you talking about Stylista which I thought was about Elle magazine or have I missed some Marie Claire reality tv show?

Laura – I think you have it in one – EGO.

Sourkraut – agree he has to learn to ignore negative press, for chrissake he is very successful and his restaurants are full.

Anon- I doubt George would see he was a sell out.

Georgie really does have a spatula up his arse doesn’t he? But I must say having worked with many a temperamental chef, it comes with the territory a lot of the time!

I can actually understand the point about reviewing a restaurant if you’ve caught one on a bad night but by the same token it could have been anyones’ observation as a paying customer….

Small man, big………..ego, but not a very robust one obviously.

George really doesn’t come across as a very likeable character. Maybe his restaurants have received less than positive spins from a blogger or two but you know what? These are the people more likely to keep George in business than the food critics.

Your knife comment must have been really ‘cutting’ (ha!) for him, RR. Sorry, couldn’t resist.

Running in heels was the Marie Claire show… it was just after Nina Garcia had joined them. Joanna Coles is the editor. It focussed on three interns. Finished in Oz about 3 months ago…
