If it is physically possible, Kyle Sandiland’s ego just got bigger. News in this morning that in the first radio rating results of the year he and his breakfast team partner Jackie O have pulled off an amazing ratings win for their new radio station.
I don’t understand radio ratings but they lifted their breakfast slot at Kiis FM by a big six points. Apparently a result that is near impossible.
Today FM were the big casualty losing 6.6 points. Clearly fans walked with their feet and the big bucks they are paying the pair has been worth it for Kiis FM.
Today replaced Kyle and Jackie O with a panel of four including reality stars Sophie Monk and Mel B as well as Jules Lund and Merrick Watts. Today FM have said they will be sticking with the show.
Kyle’s audience is not going to hear the end of how fabulous he is now.

It was the big story in radio at the end of 2013 that Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O were moving to 106.5 FM with their breakfast show.
With the ratings season about to start they needed to let Kyle off his leash to talk about the move and props to him he does not give sanitised media interviews. It is an interesting read but chances of him ever being employed by Today FM again would be slim. Well while current management are there anyway.
The interview in the Sunday Telegraph has these gems in it:
On SCA’s chief content boss Guy Dobson:
Kyle: “Guy Dobson is a f***wit. He has come out and said that because he knows they are in a world of sh.t. They have slapped together a breakfast show which won’t work and he’s trying to make himself relevant. I’ve even sent him a text saying; ‘You’re a f*** *** for saying that’. And then I had other executives from Austereo contact me and say; ‘Don’t worry about what Guy says … that’s not how we feel, we are devastated you’ve left.”
On 2Day FM’s new breakfast show:
Kyle:“You have four alpha personalities on there, all together which means it’s all gonna be (AHHHH weird noise) – ‘I wanna be the star,’.
“Then you bring in one guest and all of a sudden there are five voices, it’s just sort of sounds like a massive mess. But I wish them the luck. I like three of the four people on that show, so I wish them the best. But they probably won’t be very successful….(laughs). Sorry.”
Jackie: “Well look, I think it’s foolish to say people won’t sample it.
“I think people will sample it out of curiosity. I think it’s arrogant to say people are going to come over immediately. That’s not realistic to say at all, so we are aware that will happen and they will be curious.”
Kyle: “Well Mel is only there for 3 months, one hour a day. That won’t last…They would have done that because they had Merrick, Sophie Jules, and thought f***, this isn’t good enough. Let’s get Mel to do it.
“I know that already for a fact, she’s only there for three months, one hour a day as guest, which to me, feels like interviewing the same person everyday which would be a nightmare.
“But I like Mel she is a good talent, but she’s not very much a morning person, neither is Sophie, so it’s going to be very difficult. I’m very much a morning person, I’m gone by the afternoon. I’m sure Jules and Merrick will be fine for the morning (but) I don’t think those two will get on very well either, knowing them. I don’t think they’ll get on, cause Merrick is a f*** head and Jules is nice.
“It’s just gunna be a disaster. I’m so sorry, but I totally believe that…I know all those people and I just can’t wait for it to fall apart. So Mel will be the first one to leave in 3 months, and it will be a battle – it’s him or me, between Jules and Merrick, and yeah that’s it. It’ll end up being Jules and Sophie in 6 months’ time. That’s what I think.”

I tend to agree with Kyle that four people on the breakfast show is going to be too much.

Kyle Sandiland’s is probably one of the most interesting media personalities in Australila. Love him or hate him he is not a sanitised media thought bubble spouting out pre-prepped one liners.
In a very interesting interview with TV Tonight (well worth a read and it canvasses a range of topics) Kyle states that his fellow judge on Australian Idol may very rarely have given negative feedback to a contestant’s face she did let her thoughts about them known to him.
The article states:
Sandilands says his first year on Idol was difficult because Dicko was so well-regarded and he was unfamiliar with Marcia Hines and Mark Holden’s work.
“Mark and Marcia were difficult. And I was like ‘Who the f*** are these old nobodies making my life difficult?’ I didn’t know Mark with his little flower. I didn’t know Marcia -at all. I knew Deni. But Deni’s mum who is she?” he asks.
“Now we’re besties but I didn’t like her then. I was ignorant to her past and her success and she was completely ignorant to where I came from and what I stood for and we clashed.
“It was bad. She’d storm off set and we’d argue, hold up production, she’d storm off, refuse to work with me and I’d laugh in her face. I just didn’t care.
“But the first day back on the second year she grabbed me and said, ‘You know sweetheart, I really gave you a hard time.’
“The funny thing was by year 2 when her and I had mended the bridge …. she’d sit there and say ‘You tried your best darlin’, you tried your best.’ But as they walked out she’d turn around and say ‘I hate that mother f***er!’ The real Marcia would come out. She’s hilarious.”.
Also he thinks The X Factor season one winner Altiyan Childs was harshly treated:
“Altiyan Childs I voted for and in the ad break they were all ‘What the hell?’”
Childs when on to win the first season of the Seven show, but despite Altiyan’s ups and downs, Sandilands remains a supporter.
“He always got f***ed over by everyone he ever worked for because he’s a bit kooky and difficult. But this is the music business. Everyone who’s good or successful is a bit kooky and difficult, they all are. And everyone seemed a bit surprised that Altiyan was,” he says.
“I know he’s a bit of a space cadet but so are the Rolling Stones, so’s Pink, they’re all loons!
“They didn’t put a record out the first year that he won and I thought that was bullshit. I thought the whole political stuff behind the scenes…. I didn’t like it. They let him die on the vine. I know he’s had his trouble, we’ve read about them.
“But he is a true rock star. Best voice in this country. But he had the dodgy manager situation, they didn’t put his record out straight away and he got all emotional and weird and freaked out everybody. But that’s what they do, they all do that! They’re loony artists.”

Kyle Sandiland’s is like Lazarus one minute you think he his career is dead and he like Lazarus rises out of the ashes bigger than ever.
It has been a good week for him, he has been announced as the fourth judge on Australia’s Got Talent, and also he has been photgraphed with the Prime Minister, albeit as a rabbit but still it was the Prime Minister. This photo opportunity will have gone down well with NINE as it will absolve any doubts they might of had in signing the shock jock.
This of course is good for Kyle but not sure it is as good for the PM, as he is a tad controversial with some of the remarks he has said about and to females in the past, and let’s face it probably in the future as well.
However maybe she can learn how to become popular when you are unpopular, because let’s face it Kyle has this mastered he is the most popular, unpopular person on radio and his ratings back him up on this.

Kyle Sandilands will continue on Australia’s Got Talent on Channel NINE. He is the only one of the original cast to come across with the format.
Clearly NINE are wanting to harness both his popularity (yes he has the high rating radio show) and his controversy he attracts.
Also Kyle has shown he knows what he is doing as a reality TV judge, as long as he does not have to mentor the acts he is fine and he does give good grabs.
It will be interesting to see how he gets on with the other judges Dawn French, Mel B, and Timomatic. Hopefully Timomatic won’t feel dwarfed by the big personalities he will be sitting with.
What do you think of the signing of Kyle Sandilands? Are you going to check out the new look Australia’s Got Talent?
