Jacob Butler who was on Season Five of Australian Idol continues to follow his musical dream with a single out called ‘Come My Way’. I was surprised Jacob Butler did not get further in the reality singing show contest.

Excess Baggage: Kate DeAraugo Had Full Body Lipo

Australian Idol winner Kate DeAraugo told the Sunday Telegraph that after she finished on Idol she had full body liposuction.

Doing that just sounds so painful. However her weight troubles have continued. She is now on the new reality show Excess Baggage which will be shown on Channel Nine in 2012.

She told the Sunday Telegraph:

DeAraugo, who sparked a wave of public support on the show when judge Kyle Sandilands said she had “tuckshop lady arms” in the 2005 season, had the procedure after the show.

“Nobody knew,” DeAraugo tells Insider on Queensland’s Whitehaven Beach, where she is currently filming Nine’s new reality body image show, Excess Baggage.

“It was full-body, some outrageous amount of incisions in my body and was just horrendous.”

The singer, 26, who currently weighs 100kg, said the pressure of her Idol win intensified the battle she’d suffered with her weight since age 15.

“I was in the spotlight, and I was hearing my career needed it. I put myself through liposuction because I thought that was the answer.

“There’s really nothing that I haven’t done to get skinny. I was always told life will be better when I’m thin. My weight has been something that’s that has traumatised me my whole life.”

DeAraugo released one solo album after winning Idol before joining The Young Divas, until 2008.

She signed with, then walked away from, Jenny Craig and her career went downhill. “It all turned to s***,” she explains. “I stopped working two years ago and decided to write and record an album, which has been waiting for 12 months.

“They can’t market it and I know it’s not my voice, it’s my look.”

It appears Kate never got much support from her management or record company after she won Australian Idol, however I think her issues for not having a successful career in music cannot not be all put down to her weight. She never had a lot of personality or star power, maybe Excess Baggage can revive her career.

Just When You Think Ricki-Lee Coulter’s Career Is Dead She Recovers

Props to Ricki-Lee Coulter for doing a lazaurs like return to the lime light with news she has signed a huge record contract overseas.

The Daily Telegraphreports the former Australian Idol star has signed a worldwide singing contract with EMI.

RICKI-LEE Coulter was about to turn her back on her music career when an American hit-maker convinced her she had the goods to keep going.

Now the formerly independent artist has signed a worldwide deal with major label EMI and will relaunch her chart fortunes with a “world-class” pop song Raining Diamonds.

Coulter’s love affair with music began again after she emailed American producer and songwriter Billy Mann, who has penned hits for Pink, Ricky Martin, Kelly Rowland and dozens of pop stars.

Mann checked into Coulter’s background and invited her to New York to work with him and his producer protege BoyBlue.

Coulter said Raining Diamonds, one of the first songs they wrote together, is her ticket to take Australian pop to the world and demonstrate our artists can match it with the American superstars.

“I’m enjoying challenging myself,” she said. “I want to raise the bar and set a new standard for Australian pop artists. I respect Beyonce and Gaga because they push the limits and set the standard. No one in Australia really sings, dances, writes and is so entrenched in the whole music creation process. I want to up the ante and prove we can be that good as well.”

Single-minded about her return to music after stints in television and radio, Coulter said her pop career is now her priority.

Raining Diamonds is all about knowing your value and not settling for less than what you believe you are worth,” she said.

The single is on iTunes now.

Also if you click the links to The Daily Telegraph you are able to listen to the song it is down the bottom of the article.

Good luck to her I have always been a fan.

Has Ricki-Lee Coulter’s Weight Loss Killed Her Career?

Ricki-Lee Coulter has been one of the few Australian Idol alumni’s to have a long and diverse career after the show. However has the very spunky Ricki-Lee killed her career and potentially her endorsement deals by losing 25 kgs.

In fact the only deal she has left is with a shape wear brand.

I like Ricki-Lee so I hope she does continue her media career. Her new manager should consider trying to get her on Celebrity Apprentice which Channel Nine has confirmed they will be producing next year.

Marty Simpson From Australian Idol Has An Album Coming Out

I must be having a very slow news day if I am reporting on Australian Idol alumni from four years ago….

However Marty Simpson is releasing an album called Exit. For those who have forgotten him, he was the guy with the eyebrows like Aggro.

He recorded a lot of it in the US.

The Daily Telegraph reported on this, however I think it was because model it girl of the moment Bambi Northwood-Blythe was is in the video.

I did a search on YouTube for him and found this original song from 2008, and have to say it is not bad at all.

Also here is one of his performances from Australian Idol.

Kyle Sandilands started the rumour, and of course Jessica is denying this shit.

How Hot Does Natalie Gauci Look?

Natalie Gauci

Natalie Gauci winner of Australian Idol season six might have the last laugh.

She has constantly been described as the winner who went nowhere, and I don’t think Sony even released her album of her original songs.

Anyway not she is looking smoking hot, due to her new job as a personal trainer but she also has a new single out.

The Herald Sun reports:

The Elsternwick resident said she had waited three years to shed her Idol skin and release her first single, Dreamers, with new electro-pop band Tune In Tokyo.

“I am definitely back and doing things my way,” Gauci said.

After winning Idol in 2007, Gauci said she felt pushed and prodded by record label Sony after releasing the “obligatory” Idol album, Winner’s Journey.

So, she decided to pack her bags and do things on her own.

“Idol was like an arranged marriage. There were good days and bad days,” she said. “I didn’t get angry, just bossy, and I just followed my instincts.

“It has been three years exactly and I fought really hard to be totally free creatively and musically.”

After celebrating her 29th birthday yesterday with husband and singer Hamish Cowan, the laid-back songstress said next year was hers.

“I have so many things on the go,” Gauci said.

“I am working on my album with collaborator Paul Brandoli for Tune In Tokyo, a solo jazz pop album and I appear and sing in a new film, Big Mamma’s Boy, with Holly Valance, which comes out next year.”

Dreamers will be released on radio on Monday.

You go girl prove us all wrong.

UPDATE:

Anonymous kindly posted the link to the video on YouTube and OK Anon you are probably right I do need to re-think my theory.

Here is the clip if anyone is interested.

The Morning Show – Are Reality Talent Shows Not Nurturing Talent?

I was lucky enough to be on a panel this morning on The Morning Show for a discussion on whether reality shows are the only way to get a break in the music industry. Think Australian Idol, The X Factor and Australia’s Got Talent. The segment came from an article in the Daily Telegraph where Tina Arena said these shows put making a dollar ahead of nurturing talent. A tad ironic considering she was a guest judge on Australian Idol a couple of years ago.
Maz Compton from Nova, and Glenn A Baker rock historian also joined in on the debate.
My view is that these shows actually gives the opportunity for people who would not normally be able to be noticed by the people that matter.
People from lower socio economic backgrounds and regional areas who would find it difficult to start or sustain a music career have been given this level playing field of these shows. It takes money to go to the Brent Street’s or to get singing lessons, make demos etc or even just move to the city.
But also prior to Idol in Australia, the music industry was pretty anglo focused and this program showcased the depth of talent from people in this multicultural country.
Would Guy Sebastian a Sri Lankan/Malaysian been able to get noticed by a record executive? I think not.
Also it gives opportunity for people outside of the box to gain a fan base. Would Sally Chatfield be able to break through the traditional way, and Altiyan Childs would not be given this final opportunity to become a rock star.
I agree with Maz Compton when she said there is still a variety of ways to break into the industry and this is just one of them.
Glenn A Baker who was positive about some of the talent from these show, quoted Elton John who said he would not have made it on those shows, as he was fat and pudgy piano player.
I actually disagree, I think an audience is discerning when it comes to talent. Also Elton would have found it far more difficult to break through in the ’80′s and ’90′s with the start of MTV, and video clips, this was when pop and rock stars had to come out of the cookie cutter mould.
Reality TV talent shows broke away from this stereotype.
Your thoughts?

Marcia Hines Says Kyle Sandiland’s Sacking From Australian Idol Was Wrong

Australian Idol judge Marcia Hines has told the Daily Telegraph that it was wrong that Kyle Sandilands was sacked from the show last year. Kyle was dumped after he questioned a fourteen year old about her sex life on radio in front of her mother where she revealed she had been sexually assaulted.

Marcia said in the article:

“It was one of the most unfair things I’ve seen,” she said, of Kyle, who was sacked as a judge following a controversy on his radio show.

“He’s my buddy. I like Kyle. Kyle says what he wants to say. Most people are the same way but they’re not on TV. I was so bummed out that he was taken off the show.”

Hines said she agreed with popular opinion that new judge Jay Dee Springbett was boring.

“You said it, so I don’t need to repeat it,” she said. “Jay Dee and Dicko were too similar. There was no humour. That’s where Kyle came in.”

Marcia Hines in the article did not reveal what she thought her role on the show was.

Kyle’s TV career is continuing to thrive with a gig on Australia’s Got Talent, and the new X Factor.
