The Block – The Double Bathroom Reveal

Bec and George are showing they are going to be very competitive in this season of The Block. That is if they stay on the show. The previews for next week show there is a personal tragedy in their family.

Tonight was the room reveal for the his and her bathrooms and there was no splatter room this time which was probably a positive thing.  Judge Neale Whittaker thought it was one of the best weeks on The Block ever.

It was the battle of the steam rooms and the twins would have been happy they received the points and moral victory over Trixie considering they still think she stole the idea.

The judges were generally positive about the bathrooms:

Trixie and Johnnon – the judges did not like the plastic cheap vent  and did not think it belonged in a penthouse bathroom, and the door above the sink could not be opened in the hers ensuite. The tiles were fantastic and almost looked had a three dimension look about them.  The male bathroom had the steam room and the judges loved it.

Madi and Jarod’s male ensuite was very slick and had black chrome and lots of  storage. This pair have not really hit their straps yet and hopefully their design style will get slicker. The rug in the hers bathroom was a bit bizarre and Nanaish. The judges thought the grey tiles were a bit plain and there was an issue with the tap fixture over the bath it was not on properly so water would not run it in properly.

Bec and George – gave two slick bathrooms. Shaynna said she loved the day spa feel to Bec and George’s bathroom and she even said she would have been proud to have said she designed it herself. There were light bulbs all around the mirror and wood beside the bath.

The male bathroom was just as good.

Kim and Matt – The WA team redeemed themselves somewhat this week after the disasterous splatter room. But they still had too much going on. In the girls bathroom there was a lot of different styles going on. However it was a smart touch to have speakers in the ceiling. The judges prefered the male ensuite as it had a double shower and was did not have so many styles thrown in it.  Shaynna thought it was a great starting point for them to move through the rest of the apartment.

Alisa and Lysandra –  had two beautiful bathrooms. They had a point of difference with  concrete floors and a steam room. Neale was very vocal with his wows.  The hers bathroom had a chandelier and a lovely posh vibe about it.

Considering it is Melbourne I wonder if any of the floors had heating underneath them.

Shaynna said it was going to be a five horse race however  WA and NSW were never in it. Lysandra and Alisa and Bec and George tied for first place so they had to split the prize money.

The scores were:

Trixie and Johnno: 26 1/2

Madi & Jarrod: 24

Bec & George: 27 1/2

Kim & Matt: 25 1/2

Lysandra and Alisa: 27 1/2

Which bathroom did you like the best?

I preferred Trixie and Johnno’s bathroom and not just because of the terrible way the twins have treated Trixie all week (IF the “edit” is to be believed).

I liked that their bathrooms “matched”, even though each was distinctive. However, I wasn’t a fan of the light hanging above the toilet (who wants to highlight the toilet) or the fact that the mirrored doors couldn’t be opened without first adjusting the tapware. That was very poor planning on their part.

My second favourite was probably Maddie and Jarrod’s bathrooms, even with the misplaced tap for the bath in the “her” bathroom. Although, very few of the bathrooms really appealed to me as I didn’t understand why they were all so dark and claustrophobic even though they were already small rooms. Trixie and Johnno’s “her” bathroom felt like the biggest and brightest, but it still didn’t seem like a particularly large room. Some of the “his” bathrooms appeared to be more like a dark, dingy cupboard than a luxurious bathroom.

Trixie & Johno should have lost points for ‘stealing’ the idea from the Twins. If you cannot be original don’t go on the show

Guessing that the fluffy roller pushed stressed Twins over the top after the steam room incident

Instead of his / hers they should have just had one large ensuite…

Double sink
Shower for 2
Bathtub for 2

If installing steam room, it’s a good way for 2 people to relax & not just him !

Interesting to know who steals ideas this week …. Or it’s just drama for our sake

I shall be upfront and admit my bias…the character of Trixie as presented by the editors of The Block comes across as immature and back-stabbing. She is constantly telling the camera, the other contestants ‘how she lives for others’ and what a kind and wonderfully nice person she is but actions shown would suggest otherwise.

Don’t tell the twins you are not going to present the steam room. That was just stupid. It is a competition. We expect the steam room to be working when it is presented for judgement. Trixie doing what she did comes across at best naive and worse a liar. And Rollergate-let’s not go there.

It really was a three horse race and I am glad the ‘penthouse team missed out. I agree RR, Bec and George look extremely competive at this point. Hope the preview is the usual over exaggeration.

Anna I agree. There should have been one large ensuite instead of two pokey little ones. Did anyone notice that in the floor plans the doors open from separate rooms? Does this mean his and hers master bedrooms?

5 Maz { 05.27.13 at 9:45 am }

Annajjj-I got the impression that it was one Master bedroom with the ensuite openings on either side of the bed.

6 Erin { 05.27.13 at 10:38 am }

@Anna, I asked them all on twitter why they didn’t knock the wall down for one large bathroom (and / or why we weren’t shown that they at least considered it) Bec and George and Matt and Kim replied. Both teams said, that all the teams asked and were told that the because they are all on top of each other, structurally the building couldn’t sustain it, so the double bathrooms had to stay.

If I was in the market to be buying those apartments, i would much prefer the money to have been spent making the building structurally sound (thereby allowing the wall to be knocked down) than $1000s being wasted on sheets and towels or other no so necessary fixtures and fittings.

7 annajjj { 05.27.13 at 10:57 am }

Maz you could be right – it definitely doesn’t make sense to have them coming off different rooms. There appears to be a wall between them but I daresay that will be pulled down to create one large master. If you look at the post (on the timeline 16 hours ago) on The Block facebook page it has a wall still there.

8 Erin { 05.27.13 at 11:06 am }

The floor plan to me, looks like one of the bathrooms, the door is from the bedroom area of the master suite, but the other bathroom, the door access is from the dressing room. The way i’m reading the floor plan, one whole corner is basically the mastersuite, with the bedroom, two bathrooms and a dressing room.

Because it was a hotel, i’m assuming they are having to work with alot of the room structure that was already there.

Having been involved in housework for several decades, I’m waiting for a designer to emerge who takes the cleaning of their home designs into consideration. Practical before elaborate/luxurious for me.

10 AJ { 05.27.13 at 11:26 am }

I think Erin is right. It appears that one ensuite is accessed from the master bedroom and the other is accessed from the dressing room which itself is attached to the master bedroom.

It’s still odd. Even if the teams couldn’t remove the entire wall for structural reasons, surely they could have created a doorway between the two rooms and had double sinks and storage in one ensuite and the toilet and bath/shower in the other ensuite?

11 Erin { 05.27.13 at 11:33 am }

@Georgie – couldn’t agree more, who wants to clean 4 bathrooms / 5 toilets?! Seems they all forgot storage in their bathrooms as well.

It really annoys me that judges are all designers, i think they need at least one or two real estate agents in the mix.

@AJ, my guess is that they couldn’t with the time constraints… The fact that we didn’t see see any of them even suggest any of this on camera leads me to believe they were all forced to do separate bathrooms.

12 Anna { 05.27.13 at 11:36 am }

So many fixtures & fittings aren’t thought through prior to installation . Might look pretty, but not practical for every day living

His/hers bathrooms ? Who wants to clean do many bathrooms?

All his bathrooms were dark, sorry mean masculine … Pfftt

Getting fancy tiles is a bad idea, if any crack then replacement is almost impossible if it was a limited edition

I have to agree, the money would have been better spent on fixing the building structurally then wasting money on very expensive inclusions or even idiotic challenges

13 Louise { 05.27.13 at 12:17 pm }

Anna, I agree with you on most things apart from the fact that Johnno & Trixie stole the twins idea. Maybe you missed the episode but it was actually Johnno & Trixie’s electrician who found out that the twins were doing a steam room and he presented it to Johnno & Trixie as his own idea.

Personally, I didn’t like the twins bathrooms but I am not a fan of polished concrete. I think that Bec & George did a brilliant job and would be happy to use either of their bathrooms and also like Johnno & Trixie’s.

Although having 4 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms may sound ridiculous, it’s actually not. I work in real estate and a lot of people purchasing high end apartments want each bedroom to have it’s own bathroom for rental purposes. That way they can rent out each room seperately and no tenants need to share a bathroom which is a big plus.

14 PollyB { 05.27.13 at 12:48 pm }

Georgie #9 – Exactly! The non-existent practicalities of utility rooms built on these shows is extraordinary. Yes, they can look beautiful, but kitchens, bathrooms & laundries need to be practical, and easy to clean!

15 Anna { 05.27.13 at 12:59 pm }

Louise , when confronted sparkie admitted to stealing the idea and presenting it to Trixie and Johno. At that time they should have pulled the plug on the steam room

Last night, the judges started on lvl 5, by the time they got to level one they said ‘ANOTHER steam room’.

Georgie, not sure if all the light-bulbs will be on in the Bec/George bathroom all the time…

That wooden thingy looks good for a spa, in home environment it will collect dust and people will be tripping over it

The Twins Bathroom had elaborate ceiling lamps. Who the hell will take them apart and clean them?

16 LB { 05.27.13 at 2:07 pm }

Just quietly, if you’re buying in the price range that is being touted for these apartments then cleaning bathrooms is probably the least of your concerns.

Purchasers are highly unlikely to be families with young children, and if they do have kids will be teens or 20’s & in that price range would expect each bedroom to have their own ensuite.

17 Anna { 05.27.13 at 2:12 pm }

LB, even if they hire cleaners, the price will be higher then normal. No one likes cleaning bathrooms.

Not one team thought of being practical….

18 LB { 05.27.13 at 2:20 pm }

Anna, clearly there are constraints as to what they can do with an old building. You have to maintain the integrity of the building – start pulling walls out at will & the building will become compromised.

I can’t imagine that another hour of cleaning is going to make all that much difference.

19 Anna { 05.27.13 at 2:33 pm }

LB, most of the renovations look OK on the surface, not so sure how well they are built since bathrooms take longer then a week to do. They did 2 in a week

Everyone, well almost everyone is aiming for a magazine style finish & not practical one

20 LB { 05.27.13 at 2:45 pm }

Anna, having been involved in a TV renovation I can tell you that the reno was as rough as guts – certainly not something I would purchase. That said, it absolutely astounds me the prices that properties on TB have achieved & what they expect for this series.

21 Reality Raver { 05.27.13 at 2:45 pm }

Tend to agree I nice luxurious ensuite and there are plenty of other loos in the apartment for people to go to if they need to. Regarding finishes I suspect all the shonky finishes are gone over by a tradie to make it all saleable quality.

22 Anna { 05.27.13 at 2:54 pm }

LB, exactly!!! It’s all for show…

Some people are crazy and will pay a lot of $$$ for a house/ unit that is ‘famous’ lol

Bec and George, what was with the mirror with all the light bulbs? Looked like something from an old movie…

Emma, some of the shonky craftsmanship still might go unnoticed until it breaks with constant use… All the new ‘luxury’ units all over Sydney have that problem

With 2 kids you might need a bathroom all to yourself to escape from time to time :-)

23 Louise { 05.27.13 at 2:56 pm }

Anna, by the time they found out about the so called ‘stolen’ idea they had already done work and I am guessing most likely planned their bathroom incorporating the steam room. Are you telling me that in the same circumstance’s you would have stopped? I know I sure wouldn’t and I am guessing not many others would too.

Also, the twins evidently got the idea of a steam room from somewhere, most likely another designer. This would make them unoriginal too?

24 Louise { 05.27.13 at 3:01 pm }

Also, I wouldn’t say ‘all’ luxury apartments in Sydney have that issue. Bit of a generalisation there…

25 Violet { 05.27.13 at 3:03 pm }

I have always loved the idea of his & hers ensuites, but I wouldn’t want a bathtub instead of a shower in mine. To me that’s not making proper use of the space. If they were allowed to knock down the wall to create a bigger ensuite I think a tub would have been great, but not with the set-up as is. For that reason I think Alisa and Lysandra and Trixie and Johnno’s were the most practical.

26 Anna { 05.27.13 at 3:22 pm }

Geez Louise, don’t take it to heart

I know that some of the new ‘luxury’ dumps are badly built from tradies who come in to fix odd things at my old place and from people who move into those places. Rent is high and places aren’t worth the money the owners have paid for them

These units might rented out to 4 couples per unit

27 Rocky { 05.27.13 at 4:17 pm }

Great ending to this week. The Twins deserved the win. Trixie is being edited positively on these last couple of episodes. She gets to throw around her negatives of the Twins, while there was no edited feedback from the Twins which give the impression that the Twins are guilty of her complaints. The truth is Trixie is a scheming crybaby who plays victim and since that works with hubby she thinks it will work in the real world. (yeah it works with hubby-look who really does all the hard work while Trixie has plenty of time to run errands -including everyone else and go get her hair done-then run to floors and cry about her mistreatment), while later complaining about having to get up to actually do something and help Johnno who was up as usual working alone.

By the way what wife would not know at least know about their husbands profession of over 20 years of professional painting etc of how important the brushes are to him. Yet if we are to believe Trixie that idea never crossed her mind when entering a store full of different types of brushes and paint supplies.

Try it somewhere else Trixie!

28 Anna { 05.27.13 at 4:44 pm }

Rocky, ha!!! The sales guy at Mitre 10 did mention that she bought different brushes for herself

Already tired of Trixie and it’s only week 2

29 annajjj { 05.27.13 at 7:09 pm }

Erin you are spot on, Facebook has the floorplan and one of thee ensuites does come off the dressing room.

30 Christina { 05.27.13 at 7:59 pm }

I am surprised so many people are pro or anti Trixie and the Twins. If these incidents prove anything it’s that there is always two sides to every story and how miscommunication can cause damage in stressful situations. I really feel for Trixie being so harshly criticised for being emotional, and same for the girls…whose emotional outburst is anger rather than tears. It’s such a high pressure pot they in. Hope they sort it out and everyone watching can be a bit more understanding.

As for tonight’s ep (and this is by no means a personal attack on character, just an opinion on their design!) what are the girls thinking putting a bath in the dressing room?! I luuuurve a bath…am sure it will loook great but, as has been debated above, the floorplan is already overrun with bathrooms!! What a waste of space. You can never have enough storage, or even part storage part parental retreat/lounge area. IMO!!

31 Anna { 05.27.13 at 9:53 pm }

annajjj , I posted a link to the floor plan in the last blog…. really don’t like the floor plan…

Christina, if Trixie stops talking how wonderful she is, may be people will like her more, just saying

32 LB { 05.28.13 at 3:28 am }

Christina, I am so with you on the bath in the dressing room thing. Apart from there being ample bathrooms already, the reduction in storage is a real problem. Also, I don’t want clothes exposed to steam – ugh, mould anyone?

33 Erin { 05.28.13 at 10:39 am }

oh, couldn’t agree more about the bath in the dressing room, i too love a bath, but not in the same room as all my clothes! the space would be far better put to use as storage or a vanity or something like that…

34 Reality Raver { 05.28.13 at 10:44 am }

Agree bath in dressing room dumb idea. It will probably look good but not practical. It is like those baths that stick out half in a bedroom

35 Anna { 05.28.13 at 3:35 pm }

Don’t know what the twins are thinking?!?!?!

Storage, storage, storage!!! Will give them a room win and if not a room win then get them higher price come auction day

Love thy neighbor is great in theory, but it’s a reno show and in 10 short weeks you’ll never see each other again. Grin and bear the reno noise and criticism

My building tends to accumulate the nasties that are cut from same cloths or don’t have a spine. Scary but a 67 yo bully and a 37yo who moved in a few years ago are so alike it’s not funny. They aren’t related.. no one trusts either one of them BUT some kiss up to them to be on their good side… I’ve taken a different approach, stay away from both of them.
