The Block Is Rigged

Well the show is rigged, with Chez and Brenton winning this week, as they were the only team not to have won a room yet. There room was again one of the weakest. For someone who has done two years of interior design Chez is not that great at it. But more on that later.

Tonight it was again about constant pimping of sponsors and a lot of repetition. For example a voice over tells me that Erin and Jake had no sleep prior to the room judging. But then Scott Cam also asks them directly “So how much sleep did you get last night?”

Memo to producers your audience is not THAT stupid. Nor did we need Scott Cam to count out $100,000 to us. But for the first time I did feel sorry for the contestants as they have to fix up the outside of their flats next week, plus do the bathroom and laundry.

So the blokes had help with their decorating from Freedom, for the last room. Is that fair? The pimping of Freedom tonight took up at least five minutes of the show. The blokes were there as were Chez and Brenton in two separate segments. The winner of season one of The Block Adam Thorn now works for Freedom kitchens so we had to see that as well. I wonder if his recruitment to the job occurred because of Freedom sponsoring The Block? To be honest don’t answer that I don’t care.

Hickey, Chez’s carpenter mate, was scarred by his Kings Cross Hostel experience which could indicate he is not charging Sydney prices because if he did the Hilton would not have been out of his price range. Chez had to go around The Block and ask permission for him the sleep over. Which they all gave.

At first I didn’t get the gratutious shot of Hickey having a shower, (not that I had a problem with that) but then when the water wasn’t draining I finally got there was renovation issue.

If their tiler was so bad why didn’t they just expose who it was. I noted he was pixelated, but I wonder if he signed a release form. Also if he is such a bad tradesman name and shame him or are they working up a bad The Block tradesman story on A Current Affair?

Tonight was the master bedroom and the judges liked Neisha’s and John neutral palate they are doing throughout the house. I would not be surprised if this pays off on auction day.

The blokes master bedroom was a bit blokey, and the judges thought it felt like a hotel room.

Erin and Jake’s room was lovely execpt for the zebra stripes. Unfortunately because of Erin’s grandfather dying they lost time, and their floors were dirty and their linen was not ironed.

Chez and Brenton’s room was not my style. A black duvet cover, a TV that was nearly touching the ceiling. But the judges were gushing over it. I would have liked to have known what they really thought.

The winner was Chez and Brenton which indicates the show is rigged, as they had been the only couple not to win a room yet.

By the way Chez might be extremely irritating but she is getting the most screen time, and I suspect she will be the only on from this series we will remember.

1 life in a pink fibro { 10.20.10 at 11:11 pm }

Hmmm. She drives me nuts. But we did also get the big spiel about how Neisha and John are doing it tough and how winning would set them up for life. Setting them up as worthy winners?

2 Reality Raver { 10.20.10 at 11:29 pm }

Life in a pink fibro – agree they did lay that on a bit thick. But there is no winner yet as the auction has not occurred.

3 scruffnkelsmum { 10.21.10 at 12:19 am }

so did not want the whinging 1 to win….grrrr. if it is going to be so rigged, shall probably stop watching. Felt sooooo sorry for poor Erin. Actually liked their room, or John & Neisha’s. Thought the brat and BF’s room was ordinary, and walls too bare. Plugs for sponsors and recaps truly over the top and annoying.

4 Shelsta78 { 10.21.10 at 12:41 am }

The worst sponsor bit this week was when the judges commented on the smart used of technology and that the Tbox was the future –
Wouldn’t be because Telstra are a sponsor would it? I thought,
Seriously in any other auction none of those appliances could be factored in cause they would go with the owners – how is it fair to include that as a winning / losing factor? I wasn’t living in Oz for the first series but heard so much about how ground breaking it was as a format, unfortunately 7 (?) years on I fear it’s fallen victim to MasterChef syndrome – seriously in one MC Master class ep I saw Gary consciously turn the knife while slicing so the Global brand could be seen on camera clearly. I know they’ve got to pay the piper so to speak but in reality (pun unintended) these shows are so cheap to make I just don’t see how they can justify this level of over kill.

5 dmc { 10.21.10 at 7:00 am }

Pretty sure the guy’s name is Adam Thorn.

This show is boring. Maybe because they have done three bedrooms and I can’t really distinguish one from the other. Or the interminable product placement. Or the fact that most of the contestants make pretty dull television.

6 skye { 10.21.10 at 7:19 am }

I actually forgot this show was even on – and I was looking forward to it before it debuted. Fail.

7 smauge { 10.21.10 at 7:53 am }

You mentioned the show is rigged and Chez and Brenton were the only ones not to have won a room yet twice in this post – do you really think your readers are that stupid? 😉
For the record, I’m not watching this. You couldn’t PAY ME to watch that irritating oaf Scott Cam! Why do chanel 9 think he’s a lovable personality? He’s an idiot.

8 Paul { 10.21.10 at 8:07 am }

The Block is very expensive to make – it needs all the revenue it can get to even break square.

Masterchef isn’t that cheap either but it has the advantage that a lot of it is filmed in a set location – Masterchef kitchen.

9 MelbaToast { 10.21.10 at 8:51 am }

I don’t mind The Block – I’m enjoying seeing how everyone is decorating their flats. I do wish more time was spent showing the whole process though – it seems too rushed and too much time spent on showing the sponsors.

I thought that the judges should have been told why Erin & Jake’s room wasn’t finished to their usual standards…there were extenuating circumstances after all.

Also, re Hickey, it was never actually explained last week if Chez and whats-his-name were breaking any rules by having him stay over. We saw the body corporate meeting…but what are the rules of the show? I need closure people.

Looks like the drama is amping up for next week. Yay!

10 Jaime { 10.21.10 at 11:53 am }

MelbaToast I agree need to clarify on the rules. Because seriously why not ship down all your tradie friends and rellies and just outright cheat?

The show doesnt really go anywhere. I so want to love it. I really hope they pick up the game. Can’t be rating well right?

11 Reality Raver { 10.21.10 at 12:20 pm }

Melba toast and Jaime – I agree there needs to be rules clarified and invoices shown on what he is charging. However the Sydney people do have the advantage of knowing and using tradies previously.

Melbatoast – I agree I would like to see a bit more reno action. A commenter mentioned last week and I agree that they should not make them work so they can just do the renovation. I know they are trying to create more tension but I would like to see them actually do more around The Block.

Also I would not want my kid in the childcare centre with Neisha operating on 4 hours sleep a night.

Paul – I don’t mind product pimping, but The Block has taken it to new heights with contestants visiting shops.

Smauge – LOL – I was just trying to reiterate my disgust. Well that is my excuse.

DMC – yes Adam Thorn whoops

Shelsta78 – I still don’t know what the Telstra T-hub actually does.

Scruffnkelsmum – I think even though they are the most inexperienced Erin and Jake have a great eye.

12 MelbaToast { 10.21.10 at 12:55 pm }

I do have to say though that Erin & Jake bug me! They go on and on about “we’re not tradies” etc etc. They really play the ‘woe is me’ card.

I guess of Neisha and her hubby are struggling in life he could get a job that doesn’t pay backpacker wages.

13 Wurstsemmel { 10.21.10 at 1:10 pm }

It’s hard to even work enough enthusiasm to watch this show and I was so excited when C9 brought it back.

The most useful thing from last night would have been to know how that crappy tiler was so I can make sure I don’t use him. And why wasn’t he made to come fix up his mess? Surely if he doesn’t, Chez and Brenton’s budget sinks even lower…

Fixed? Most definitely. Chez and Brenton to win? No way.

I liked Neisha and John’s room best. I liked Erin and Jake’s room, loved the day bed/seat but the zebra on the wall killed it for me.

But, as everyone says, the constant in-show ads and the presence of Mr. Potato Head is a turn off.

14 seepi { 10.21.10 at 1:33 pm }

The show has gone like Masterchef in that it is more about the “contest’ than the decorating. In the Block One, we would see heaps of them actually talking about their ideas for the rooms, then implementing them. This time around we see next to nothing, til the rooms are revealed.

And how dull are the rooms – you guys should regret bagging out Chez’s fabric doors – they are the only interesting thing so far. Beige, Beige , Beige as far as the eye can see. With a few ‘exciting’ black and white highlights…
I think Neisha had a small blue cushion amongst the beige. How daring!

I like Jake and Erin’s style best by a country mile.

15 Reality Raver { 10.21.10 at 2:21 pm }

Seepi – LOL I was actually thinking of those doors when I was watching last night’s episode.

MelbaToast – Ouch harsh, but agree I thought it a bit strange myself that he hasn’t graduated to grader driver.. By the way I love your food blog.

Wurstsemmel – Well if the tradie refuses to come back there is not much they can do except report him to fair trading.

16 MelbaToast { 10.21.10 at 2:26 pm }

RR, yes I was a bit mean. Uncalled for! Maybe it’s a job they’ve found him during the show – though if he lives in Sydney this would be his real day job.

I do love the style of Erin & Jake though. It really appeals to me – though the Collingwood wallpaper looked a bit…wrong!

Thanks for visiting my blog and leaving a comment – I feel a bit popular today.

17 Culinary Boner { 10.21.10 at 3:59 pm }

Agree with you Raver. I expect we will see more of the tiler in question on A Current Affair. 9 surely wont miss the chance to combine an expose of an alleged intimidatory and poor quality tradie, with a promotion of one of their shows.

18 Wurstsemmel { 10.21.10 at 6:18 pm }

I have to say, Seepi, I loathe those doors. Those, and the no doors on the ensuite, don’t impress me at all.

19 angie @ water cooler oracle { 10.21.10 at 6:31 pm }

I, unfortunately, have to agree with you I think they’re setting Chez up to be the “stand out” of this season. It just sucks, but really she is the best of a rather vanilla bunch. (Except for the lads – I love them, they should get their own show!)

I kinda think the product placement in this is on par with Masterchef Australia… they tended to take that to a whole new level of pain.

20 scruffnkelsmum { 10.21.10 at 6:50 pm }

Wurstsemmel… I am so happy to hear that someone else dislikes those doors- I hate them!! they are ugly and are far too noisy- especially in such a confined area. YUK!!!! I actually like Jake & Erin’s style best so far, but I don’t mind any of them except bratty and BF. I do think Jake and Erin should have got some dispensation for the circumstances this week, but if they had there was no way the show could then justify having “bratty & BF” win- no way on earth!

21 Heléna { 10.21.10 at 8:49 pm }

I actually thought Chez’s room was the best one of four very boring rooms, Jake and Erin’s was probably better but not properly finished

– I don’t remember there ever being so many mentions for sponsors during the previous block series, and agree with Sheslta78 the worst moment was when the judges referred to the tBox – I find it really embarrassing/cringeworthy to watch

22 scruffnkelsmum { 10.21.10 at 9:45 pm }

Helena, seriously you liked the look of totally bare walls in a drab colour??? well, I guess someone has to like Chez and her efforts…apart from the BF I mean.

I am happy for anyone but them to win…

23 bella vita { 10.21.10 at 10:29 pm }

My gripes for this show

*Scott Cam is not a good host…considering he is a builder would be nice to see him really be a part of the action and get back to off the cuff comments instead of reading a script. Jamie Durie was great for this show for those reasons.
*the way Channel 9 show the apartments in a red grid…annoys me!
*the people involved themselves. Bland, boring…when The Block is open for inspection, none of them critisize the other rooms… “oh its so nice” BLAH!!
*In Series 1, others were not allowed into each other’s apartments until the block was open after judging….these guys seem to pop in and look whenever they feel like it
*more body corporate meetings to really let loose and see what is really happening there…again, Series 1 did it so well
* they are really boring room creations happening. S1 had 4 very different couples, enabling the auction to really see which look was worth more money.

Im off to watch the DVD of Series 1 now…that was a GREAT show!!

Oh and Erin and Jake are really annoying

24 brain dead dave { 10.21.10 at 10:33 pm }

Scott Cam is a great host….for bacteria. He’s not a fungi.

25 Heléna { 10.22.10 at 12:56 pm }

@scruffnkelsmum I thought they were all boring and drab looking (‘cept Jake and Erin- but they didn’t finish theirs)
Chez’ imo was the best of a bad bunch – but I don’t think they deserve to win either

26 JM { 10.24.10 at 8:45 am }

I agree. Rigged. Chez & BF’s room was okay, I quite liked it but their “win” was signposted throughout the whole show. You just knew it was going to happen. I think Erin & Jake are the ones with some individual flair.

27 TK { 10.27.10 at 9:08 pm }

Does anyone know the address?

28 FW { 10.27.10 at 9:42 pm }

i’m glad to see the end of Jamie Dreary….a man (not realy) with no knowledge of building or construction processes, just another rip off designer. As his new show clearly reveals.

29 FW { 10.27.10 at 9:44 pm }

him and his hebel carvings. dickhead

30 Summer { 11.11.10 at 9:59 pm }

Erin and Jake were dishonest, did not come clean when given the opportunity and if Scott is a friend they put him in an untenable situation. Best wishes to the rest of the Block, thumbs down to Jake and Erin.

31 scruffnkelsmum { 11.11.10 at 10:08 pm }

where did anyone get the idea that Scott is their friend??? I don’t recall seeing anything about that?
